What Tasker's UI Could Be, As Imagined By The Android Team [Video]

Whenever the discussion of apps with bad UI comes up, Tasker - powerful as it may be - is always one of the first to be mentioned. Because, let's face it, it's pretty hideous. In the early days of Android, this wasn't much of an issue, as there was no standard UI. Or, you know, the Android Style Guide. In the past year or so, though, Google has really been pushing a the clean look of ICS+, Holo, and a consistent experience across applications.

Since Tasker is one of the most popular, yet not-so-easy-on-the-eyes applications out there, the Android team decided to demonstrate how great the app could look on this week's Android Design in Action, and the result is fantastic.

Tasker Updated To Add Support For 'AutoRemote', An Insanely Powerful Remote Control Utility

There are few limits to things you can make your phone do with the power of Tasker. Everything from simple automation to some of the most complex things imaginable can be handled by the app, making it one of the most versatile on Android. Now, thanks to a new app called AutoRemote, it just got even more powerful.

With AutoRemote, you can execute commands remotely - from your desktop, laptop, tablet, another phone... basically anything with a web browser. For anyone familiar with the more advanced features of Tasker, setting up AutoRemote shouldn't be much of a problem. For those unfamiliar with the software, though, it looks a little bit tricky at first.

Crafty Apps Launches Tasker App Factory (Beta), Allowing Users To Export (And Distribute) Tasks As Standalone Apps

Tasker is a versatile app to say the least. In allowing users to create and schedule sophisticated automated tasks, it has made a name for itself as one of the most useful apps available for Android. The developer behind Tasker, Crafty Apps, is now expanding on that functionality, working on Tasker App Factory, an extension of the original app which allows users to export certain actions as individual apps.

The app (which will only work for Tasker beta users) has the capability to create standalone apps which have no reliance on the main Tasker app to run. According to App Factory's instructional document, app creation takes mere seconds, meaning users can capture Tasker's awesome functionality in a zippy, (relatively) easy process.

Microsoft Unveils on{X}, A Framework For Phone Automation - Launching Now On Android And Set To Take On Tasker

A key aspect of the power of smartphones is the variety of functions they provide to the user. Data, GPS, Voice, Video, are all found in almost every Android phone on the market. With today's release of on{X} ("on-ex"), Microsoft hopes to exploit this convergence of functionality in a way that is less reliant on the user for input and more aware of its surroundings. By gathering information from the host of sensors available to the operating system, it's quite possible for your phone to determine its location and context and respond accordingly, without intervention by the user. Armed with their trademark lower-case, sans-serif, Holo-breaking Metro style convention, on{X} is Tasker for the everyman.

Tasker Updated To Version 1.2 – Includes Fixes For ICS, Customized Graphical Interfaces, And More

Tasker, an extremely versatile (and popular) app which allows users to schedule (and control) various automated tasks, received an update today, bringing the app to version 1.2.

The update brings a handful of important changes, perhaps the most notable being the addition of "Scenes." Using this new feature, Tasker allows users to design custom graphical interfaces, which appear as overlays, dialogs, or full activities.

Besides Scenes, Tasker's latest iteration also fixes compatibility issues with Ice Cream Sandwich, and includes a tweaked home screen, which conveniently divides Profiles, Tasks, and Scenes in an intuitive tabbed interface.

The update also brings the ability to group profiles, tasks, or scenes into "projects," a new Green Power Premium plugin, and a slew of bugfixes and other minor improvements.

Today's geek recipe is one of those nerdily awesomelicious things you can do with your Android phone that you probably never even thought you could - imagine coming home and having your computer turn on the moment your phone connects to the Wi-Fi network. My computer is on 24/7 in case I need to connect to it remotely, but for those who turn their PCs off in the morning and on after work, this tip could be right on the money.

There are 2 options you could go with - both use the WOL (wake-on-LAN) capabilities most modern computers should have baked in (though you may need to enable them in the BIOS and power management settings of your network card).

Some call Tasker the most versatile application ever created for Android, and I'm inclined to side with them. The app can automate hundreds of actions and bundle them together in powerful scripts that do exactly what you want them to do (see our Tasker review). Want to silence your phone at night and then restore the ringer to a predefined volume in the morning? No problem. How about popping up a menu of music apps when you plug in your headphones? You got it.

However, the Tasker "task" that brandall from xda created today takes the cake when it comes to complexity and functionality.

If your Android device relies on your interaction with it in order to do things, you're seriously missing out. There are several options that allow you to cut the cord, so to speak. The popular options have long been Locale and Tasker but, as you can see from their market pages, you have to be fiscally dedicated to the tasks they perform. In addition to that, these applications (Tasker especially) can be somewhat (read extremely) intimidating in the level of control they give you and the sheer volume of options at your disposal. If you're looking for something a bit simpler but still really powerful as well as significantly more free, AutomateIt might be just the tool you need.
