Wondering what that sign says, but you don't speak the lingo? You might want to figure it out – signs convey important information. Maybe it says "keep off the grass," but it could also say "high risk of electric shock." Word Lens can help with that by doing live translation of text using optical character recognition and the camera. It's neat, and the newest version adds support for tablets.

The new Nexus 7 is a fancy device, but it's still a little more expensive than some folks are comfortable with. The 2012 Nexus 7 is still floating around, and Newegg has a cache of them for sale on eBay. Just $114.99 and this slab of refurbished Android is headed your way this holiday season.

The 2012 N7 is still a respectable device, especially after recent updates. It benefits from the TRIM support in Android 4.3 and better memory management in 4.4.

The ranks of Android tablets continue to swell, and for the first time Lenovo is making a play for some market share. Granted, it's coming in at the low end of the market, but the new Yoga tablets are on sale through the company's corporate perks site with some solid discounts.

The Nexus 10 might be a year old, but it's still a formidable tablet with an amazing screen. Google is still selling the 32GB Nexus 10 for $499, which seems a bit steep. Tech Woot is offering the same device as a refurbished unit for a mere $279.

Asus has been in the business of making Android tablets for as long as it has been a viable business. The company has certainly won praise for its efforts on Google's Nexus tablets, but Asus still makes its own separate tablets in the Transformer line. The newest entrant in that group is the Transformer Pad TF701T. It's not the catchiest name ever slapped on a wedge of metal and glass, but it's not the name that we're interested in – it's the experience.

The changes to the Play Store we mentioned last month seem to have taken effect. Now when you're checking out apps on an Android tablet, the home page and the tabs for "Top Paid," "Top Free" and the like will only highlight apps designed for use on tablets, at least by default. If you search for a non-optimized app manually, the full listing will use a "designed for phones" tag.

Check out these screenshots.

The air is almost electric as we get ever nearer to the announcement of Android 4.4 and the Nexus 5. Of course, we don't know exactly when that will be, but tomorrow has been heavily rumored. Perhaps adding more fuel to that fire, Google has updated the Play Store listing for the Nexus 7 with a new interface better suited to selecting among multiple configurations.

Play-Store

It has traditionally been hard to find properly optimized tablet apps on Android. At first it was simply because there weren't any, but increasingly the problem is visibility. Google is aiming to change that with some new tablet-specific tweaks to the on-device Play Store app. Not only will tablet users see more tablet apps, but they'll be able to tell which apps are designed for larger screens.

The first of two changes affects the top lists in the Play Store app.
