Nexus 10 Is Official, Priced At $400 With A Stunning 2560x1600 Display And Android 4.2

The Nexus 10 is official at last, and it's just as fantastic as we all thought it would be. The Samsung-made 10.1" tablet packs an iPad-destroying 2560x1600 display for 300ppi, which is known in the scientific community as "more pixels than your eye can handle." The slate will also ship with Android 4.2, and the updated Nexus 7-like UI.

In addition, the tablet boasts up to nine hours of video playback and 500 hours of standby time. Just to make sure you're aware that it's designed for consuming media, it comes with front-facing stereo speakers. This thing is sounding pretty dang nice.

Following yesterday's price drop at GameStop, it looks like the Nexus 7 is slashing prices everywhere. Staples, Sam's Club, Office Depot, Wal-Mart, and a few other places all list the tablet at $199 (or a rough foreign equivalent). What's a little more rare is the 32GB Nexus 7 going up for sale in a few locations, though it's unclear how approved that is. Sam's Club has it up for order here, and PC Advisor is reporting that at least one user was able to buy the slate from PC World by asking for it, though it wasn't on display.

The release of the Nexus 7 brought a new phone/tablet hybrid UI to Android tablets. And today, most people agree that it works well - on the 7-inch form factor, anyway. The latest leaks from the upcoming Nexus 10 suggest that Google will keep using that same hybrid UI, despite having a display that's a few inches bigger in each direction.

As David correctly pointed out, the result is that the phone and tablet UIs are now virtually identical.

UPDATE: BriefMobile has just given us another treat, catching a (very) quick video of the Nexus 10, showing off – to some extent – its speed, and the 4.2 lockscreen in landscape mode. While the video is short, it does more justice to the device's overall form factor than probably any single photo we saw yesterday.

The post also suggests that the slate's display might be an IPS panel after all, as BriefMobile's source indicates the display has color reproduction and clarity similar to HTC's SLCD2 panel.

Good news, bad news, and really bloody ridiculous news, Android fans. Today, the latest round of DMCA exemptions has been passed and if you've ever jailbroken or rooted a phone, you'll be happy to know that this will continue to be legal. At least, for your phones. If, however, you want to gain su access to your tablet, you're fresh out of luck. Also, phones purchased after January 2013 cannot be legally unlocked for use on a carrier that didn't give you explicit permission. Yeah, it's kind of a mess.

ASUS Makes The PadFone 2 Official – Sleeker Design, Updated Specs In Tow

At an event in Milan this morning, ASUS made official the PadFone 2 – the tablet/phone combo device that looks to improve on its predecessor while continuing the goal of providing "incredible mobile flexibility." ASUS touts a redesign of both the phone and tablet elements, the integration of which appears to be much more elegant than the original, with the phone sliding vertically into the back of the tablet, ditching the clumsy door of the original PadFone for a sleek dock.

In its release, ASUS emphasizes the PadFone combo's battery first and foremost among its otherwise amped up specs. The PadFone 2 carries a 2140mAh pack, while the tablet component offers an impressive 5,000mAh that should keep things running for quite a while.

In the ongoing effort to make apps better on Android, Google has released another new guide for the developers who may be looking for guidance on just how to build a great tablet-oriented app. The piece has some fairly detailed information, including how much to adjust padding of UI elements and how to target different screen sizes and resolutions. There is also more broad guidance on how to make the most of larger screen real-estate.

There's no doubt the Android tablet market is heating up much like the phone market was a few years ago. Where before there were relatively few choices, manufacturers are now rolling out new models left and right - sometimes, it seems, with reckless abandon. It's almost like Newton's third law in action: for every great tablet released, an equal but opposite tablet is released.
