Amazon's Tablet-Friendly Mobile App Not Just For Your Nexus 7 Anymore – Update Brings Increased Compatibility

Since its launch, we've had bittersweet feelings about the Amazon Mobile app for Tablets. The app shows promise as a tablet-friendly shopping solution, but until now has suffered an extremely limited compatibility, only working with tablets running 4.1 and up and carrying a 1280x800 resolution.

An update to the app today, however, has changed all that. Along with a few bug fixes, the update (to version 5.50.1010 for those keeping count at home) brings support for devices in 7" or 10" form factors, with a variety of resolutions, and loosened OS requirements. Here's the full change log:

What's in this version:

* Now available for Android tablets that are 7" to 10" with resolutions from 600x1024 to 1200x1920 with Android OS 4.0.3 and up.

New York Times App Updated To Version 3.0 With Adaptable (Tablet-Optimized) UI And More

It's always exciting to see a new app hit the Play Store intended for tablets, but it's even better to see an existing app's UI updated to accommodate larger devices. Looking to bring Android tablet users a more aesthetically pleasing experience when reading the news, the New York Times Company today updated its app to version 3.0 with an interface that is no longer just a blown up version of its phone-centric counterpart.

That isn't to say the interface is totally new, however. As NYT indicates, the UI is now adaptable, meaning it reacts to your device's display to deliver the most appropriate interface for the form factor.

Snapseed, The Image Editor That Google Bought After It Won iPad App Of The Year, Is Now On Android

There are no shortage of image editors on Android. Even Adobe, which makes the class-leading Photoshop, has a version of its editor on the platform. Today, though, Google gets one of its very own: Snapseed. You may recall this particular piece of software when it was demoed by NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang at CES this year. At the time, it was only available on the iPad where it had won App of the Year in 2011. Shortly thereafter, Google bought the company. Now, the Android version is finally being released.

Photoshop Touch Updated To Support 7" Displays, Adds A Couple New Effects, Sharing Features

Photoshop Touch may not be completely comparable to Adobe's desktop counterpart, but when you compare it to other photo editors on the Android platform, it's still the most powerful piece of software out there. At $10, it better be, too. Today, the best just got a bit better, especially if you own a Nexus 7. The app has improved support for 7" tablets. Though, there's a catch: the resolution on said tabs have to be 1024x768 or higher. Sorry, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

In addition, there are a few other performance tweaks added to this version. For starters, brush strokes have been made smoother (great news for anyone using this with a stylus), and a couple new effects have been added, including Lens Flare (pictured above) and Stamp Pattern.

[New App] Tablet-Friendly Amazon Mobile Hits The Play Store

Android's tablet-optimized app selection being what it is, we're always excited to see a useful new app get revamped for bigger screens. It's true that a separate app package isn't technically necessary for transitioning to a great tablet layout, but Amazon has taken a step in the right direction, having just released Amazon Mobile for tablets to the Play Store.

If you've used the regular Amazon Mobile app, you know what you're getting with Amazon Mobile for tablets. Easy searching, reviews, purchasing, and account management – in tablet format.

The app certainly looks promising, and supports both landscape and portrait browsing, but right now it's only compatible with "Android OS 4.1 & up and 7” 1280x800 resolution screen," meaning the Nexus 7.

Skype App Updated With New Tablet-Optimized UI, Sign-In With Microsoft Account

It seems like the Android world is getting a ton of extra tablet love in the past few months. Today, Skype joined the party by finally introducing an optimized UI for those of you with a little more screen to love. While the new look is nice, it bizarrely forces your slate into landscape mode. Even on the Nexus 7, you have no choice but to use the wider layout. This probably isn't a bad thing, since it looks great in this mode, and might seem cramped otherwise. Still, this is the only app outside of games we've seen do this, so it's a little jarring.

[Updated] HBO GO And MAX GO Updated To Add Support For '10-Inch HD Tablets,' Only Not Really

Most of the time when an app is updated, it's pretty clear what the update brings. New features? Enhancements and tweaks? Bug fixes? Whatever the case may be - it's right there in the changelog. However, there are those circumstances when that's just not the case. The recent update to HBO GO and MAX GO are a perfect example of this - especially the latter.

Update: Looks like the MAX GO devs pulled the ol' switch-a-roo on us: they updated the changelog and removed the "support for 10-inch HD Tablets" entry. Guess that explains a lot.

Why's that, you ask?
