Vizio Jumps Into The Android Game With VIA Phone And Tablet

CES hasn't even started yet, but we're already getting word of a newly announced Android tablet - as well as a handset - from television manufacturer Vizio. The specs are nothing to scoff at, either, as the VIA Phone can certainly hold its own against any phone on the market today:

4.0" high-resolution display
Front-facing camera
5 megapixel rear camera capable of HD video
1 GHz processor
HDMI output
microSD card slot
Wi-Fi N

The VIA Tablet, on the other hand, while definitely not underpowered, might be disappointing to those who are awaiting a dual core tablet:

8.0" high-resolution display
Front-facing camera
Wi-Fi connectivity
1 GHz processor
Three speakers for video conferencing

The devices are also running a custom UI called VIA Plus, which Matthew McRae, Chief Technology Officer at Vizio assures us will be found on any future smartphones, tablets, and TVs from the company.

eLocity Announces Seven 10-Inch Tegra 2 Tablets, Indicates That Honeycomb Will Be Android 3.0 Rather Than 2.4

Here's a little something to tide you over while you're waiting for CES: eLocity today made no fewer than seven Tegra 2-powered Honeycomb tablets official.

While the company hasn't publicized many details about the devices yet (they say in-depth specifications will be available at CES), here's what we do know:

All of them are members of the A10 line
They will feature "high-resolution" multitouch displays
They will be powered by dual-core Tegra 2 processors
They will include microSD card slots as well as USB ports and an HDMI port capable of 1080p output
They will ship with a front-facing camera

While this is all very exciting, there's another item of interest here: the press release consistently refers to Honeycomb as "Android 3.0," despite the previous information we had indicating that Honeycomb would be version 2.4.

[Rumor] LG To Unveil 8.9-Inch Honeycomb Tablet At CES

Looks like Motorola won't be the only one showing off a Honeycomb tablet at CES 2011 - according to the Korea Times, LG plans to bring an 8.9-inch Android (2.4?) device to the infamous electronics show.

While the words "LG," "Honeycomb," and "tablet" are probably enough to excite many Android fans, the Korea Times was also able to confirm that LG will have another awe-inspiring device on display at CES: the much-anticipated Optimus 2X, better known as the world's first dual-core phone.

What say you - are you ready for LG to (finally) make its appearance on the high-end Android scene?

[Rumor] Motorola's Android Tablet To Be Called DROID XOOM, Won't Pack 4G

If Droid Life's sources are to be believed - and given their track record, I'd say they are - then the upcoming Honeycomb tablet from Motorola will be called the DROID XOOM. We've heard of Motorola filing trademarks for the XOOM name, so it would certainly seem to fit. One other tidbit mentioned by their source: the tablet won't come packing LTE.

Is the lack of 4G disappointing? Sure, but based on what we've seen of the tablet (Andy Rubin using it, leaked pictures, teaser video, and teaser site), it may be very, very well worth it anyway.

Over the past couple of weeks, I spent countless hours debating whether I should wait around a few months and see what tablets come out or get one now. In the latter case, which tablet was right for me?

Let me start out with what I wanted out of a tablet. First and foremost, I needed a device that let me check my email and read the news. Every morning, I wake up, grab my Sprint EVO 4G, and check my email using Gmail and my work email using Exchange. I then drift to the USA Today App to read the day’s news.

[Rumor] Samsung To Reveal Galaxy S2 (And Maybe Tab 2) At CES. Or Is It MWC?

Oh, internet... we have such a love/hate relationship, don't we? Those of you who follow regularly know that I'm generally pretty skeptical of rumors and speculation - although I'm really not a contrarian by heart. This time around we have two similar, but fundamentally different, rumors floating around.

Both involve Samsung and the successor to the Galaxy S (which the internet has dubbed... wait for it... the Galaxy S2). And while there's little doubt there will be a successor, that's about the only common thread to the rumors. One version (Korea Times) says it will debut at CES alongside the Galaxy Tab 2.

Onkyo Introduces TA117, A New Froyo Tablet

Onkyo has announced a brand new Froyo-based tablet that will launch in Japan. Most of the specifications seem pretty much up to par with what we expect; here's what the TA117 will come packaged with:

Tegra 250 Chipset (1 GHz)
Android 2.2
10.1-inch screen
1024x600 resolution
2 USB 2.0 ports
WiFi & Bluetooth
microSD card slot
HDMI port
1.3MP Camera
Either 8GB or 16GB internal storage

The only disappointing features seem to be the low-quality rear camera and the lack of a front-facing counterpart. Of course, we expect numerous Honeycomb tablets to be featured next week at CES, so this may even become obsolete within the next few months.

[Update: Possibly Fake] Best Buy Reduces Price Of Verizon's Galaxy Tab To $500 Without Contract

Though it previously retailed for $599, the Verizon version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab can now be purchased from Best Buy without a contract for just $499. The price drop may be an indication that the WiFi-only Galaxy Tab could retail for much less.

Update: It looks like this is fake! Our own source at Best Buy, as well as calls to various brick-and-mortar locations, suggest to us that this is just a case of Photoshop trickery. Sorry for any confusion! -- Aaron

Update 2: According to commenter K, this deal has indeed been going on for a bit - to get the discounted price, you have to sign up for at least the $20 plan, which can be canceled after the first month.

Motorola Tablet Teaser Site Goes Live With Countdown: Jan 5th At 4:15PM PST

As yesterday's teaser video implied, it seems that we can expect Motorola's much-anticipated Android tablet at CES. Motorola has launched a small teaser site to generate media buzz about the launch, with a countdown that expires at 4:15 p.m. on January 5th, 2011. You can also sign up to receive e-mail notifications of any news on the announcement.

Motorola's tablet will be sporting a Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip, and will presumably be the first consumer device to run Honeycomb, a version of Android tailored for tablet use. Coupled with Verizon's network, it could set the bar for Android tablets from here on out.

Motorola Teases Honeycomb Tablet, Promises Unveiling At CES 2011

Samsung might have made some cool commercials for the Galaxy Tab, but you and I both know that when it comes to advertisements, Motorola still reigns supreme. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the first promo video for their upcoming Honeycomb tablet is nothing short of epic:

As you can see, Moto thinks it has what it takes to take out both the iPad and the Galaxy Tab - in fact, the video calls the former "a giant iPhone" and accuses the latter of running "Android OS for a phone." Furthermore, tablets of old (i.e. ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic tablets) are ridiculed as having "good graphics" but "difficult portability."

Unfortunately, the video doesn't reveal many new details on the tablet other than confirming that it will run Honeycomb, as evidenced by the bee seen at the end of the video.
