T-Mobile's next 'Un-carrier' announcement will come on January 5th at CES

In John Legere's continuing effort to will himself into the role of mobile rock'n'roll Jesus, the T-Mobile CEO has released a teaser trailer for the carrier's next Un-Carrier event. Exactly what will happen at the event isn't being disclosed - in fact, the whole point of the video is "wouldn't you like to know?" We did find out that the announcement will come on January 5th in Las Vegas, not-so-coincidentally at the same time and place that next year's CES will be going down.

T-Mobile is offering AT&T customers a free year of DIRECTV NOW when they switch to T-Mobile ONE

T-Mobile US is well-known for aggressive marketing tactics that incorporate direct shots at main competitors, and its latest offer for new customers doesn't deviate from that trend at all. Starting tomorrow (December 16th), the company will offer a free year of DIRECTV NOW (worth $420) to AT&T customers who switch to T-Mobile ONE.

OnePlus 3T gets its second update in the form of OxygenOS 3.5.4, brings better T-Mobile support and other fixes

The OnePlus 3T hasn't been out for long, but OnePlus is already pushing another update to it. The Shenzhen-based company doesn't exactly have a great reputation for updating its devices, so this is nice to see. This update to OxygenOS 3.5.4 (still Android Marshmallow) brings a host of optimizations and fixes.

Got an old phone that the manufacturer or carrier has stopped pushing updates to? Chances are, there's a CyanogenMod ROM that will breathe life back into it. This week, CM maintainers have brought CyanogenMod 14.1, which is based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, to the AT&T and T-Mobile versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III, the LTE model of the second-generation Moto E, the Moto X Play, and more.

Some T-Mobile stores will soon have Google Pixel display units, but won't be selling them

According to sources familiar with T-Mobile's plans, the company will announce either today or tomorrow that the Google Pixel will be displayed in some T-Mobile retail locations. The device will not be sold at T-Mobile retail locations (or T-Mobile's website). Instead, store employees will direct customers to the Google Store (and help them with the process) or Best Buy to complete their transaction. The "carrot" for T-Mobile here is obviously that it hopes to gain subscribers, and sales reps will be pushing the provider's current Pixel promotion as part of the pitch to customers.

T-Mobile's DIGITS beta allows multiple phone numbers on a single device

We've seen a few apps and services offer virtual phone numbers before - numbers that aren't tied to a specific SIM card and can be used with an account connection rather than dedicated hardware. It's especially handy for bring-your-own-device situations at work. But T-Mobile seems to be the first major American carrier to embrace the idea with its new DIGITS system. The service allows customers to use any number of, um, numbers tied to their wireless accounts, including disposable numbers that can be added and abandoned with ease.

Android 7.0 Nougat is rolling out to the LG G5 on T-Mobile

The LG G5 was not what you'd call a success for the company. Still, for those who demand a removable battery, it was one of the only viable options in the first half of the year. If you picked up a G5 on T-Mobile (there must be dozens of you!), you're about to get an update to Nougat. Triggering the update is a little weird, though.

[Deal Alert] Save up to $250 on unlocked, carrier, and dual SIM models of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

If you closely follow smartphone deals, you know that the US unlocked models of Samsung's Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge don't often go on sale. However, for Black Friday, several retailers are handing some pretty nice discounts and freebies out for them. We're also seeing some discounts on American carrier and international dual SIM models.

T-Mobile announces a second round of Black Friday deals including more free phones, $200 for switching lines, and more

T-Mobile was not content with a single round of Black Friday deals. That's what regular carriers do, and as we are constantly reminded, T-Mobile is an un-carrier. Tmo is giving away free in-flight WiFi, $200 for switched lines, and more (sort of) free phones.
