Mobile broadcasting app Meerkat is officially dead

Meerkat might be the app that started the live-streaming on phones trend. Released early last year, it quickly rose in popularity - even to the point of dominating that year's SXSW conference. But alas, Meerkat was not long for this world, and has officially been taken offline.

Life on Air, the company behind Meerkat, announced the shutdown on Twitter two days ago. The official reason for Meerkat's demise is for the company to focus on Houseparty, a group chatting application. Co-founder of Life on Air, Ben Rubin, spoke to TechCrunch about the shutdown:

As we are all acutely aware, Google is having a huge hardware event on October 4th, and in very un-Google fashion, it's aggressively advertising it. We're fairly certain at this point there will be a pair of Pixel phones and a few other goodies, including the 4K Chromecast Ultra. A few images of that device have now leaked courtesy of Evan "evleaks" Blass.

[Update: Streaming Now] The Coachella Music Festival Is Streaming For Free This Weekend Exclusively On YouTube

Music festivals are about making sound, and lots of it. But hearing is far from the only sense assaulted during days spent rushing from one performance to another. Bodies bump against bodies. Drinks and sweat soak shirts and moisten skin. Colors and bright lights pierce eyes from all directions. To get the full experience, you must go in person.

But if it's all about the music for you, staying home isn't bad. Coachella is giving you that option this weekend.

Play Movies & TV v3.13 Includes The New Play Branding Icon And Details An Aspect Of Streaming From The Family Library [APK Teardown + Download]

A few days ago, Google announced newly revised icons for its Play-branded apps. Newsstand was the first to emerge with the updated look, but aside from very minor tweaks to a few of the icons inside the app, there wasn't anything significant to be seen. The Play Movies & TV app received a pretty similar update, again with a few minimal icon changes and the new launcher icon, but there's actually something more interesting in the teardown: new rules about streaming paid content when it's shared in the family library.

What's New

After Google announced the new icons, I insisted that AP should not post about the individual updates if those were the only changes worth pointing out.

Roku Announces New Streaming Stick, Available Later This Month For $49.99

Many people swear by Roku and its Streaming Stick: they say it's got more channels, more power, and a remote, unlike the Chromecast. Well, today even more people may start swearing by it - Roku has announced a new Stick is going to go on sale later this month. Priced at $49.99 (that's $10 more than Amazon's Fire TV stick and $15 more than the Chromecast), it packs a quad core processor and is reportedly smaller and more compact than the previous version.

As with the Chromecast, casting functionality is still included, which means content can be played on a phone then cast to the TV.
