The New Balance RunIQ, powered by Android Wear, is now on sale for $299.99

There hasn't been many new Android Wear devices lately, likely due to the delayed AW 2.0 release and major OEMs like Motorola and HTC backing out of the platform. New Balance is taking its first shot at Android Wear, with the RunIQ now available for purchase - for a penny short of $300.

The second-generation Moto 360 has been removed from the Google Store

The original Moto 360 was the smartwatch to have - the first with a round display (barring the 'flat tire'), and one of the first powered by Android Wear. Unfortunately, the lack of an always-on display, the ancient TI OMAP 3 processor, and small battery were sources of frustration for early adopters. The second-generation model fixed many of the original's shortcomings, but it did arrive with a hefty price tag of $300.

Vapor is Misfit's first touchscreen smartwatch and activity tracker, with only 2 days of battery life

Over the past few years that we've covered Misfit, the company has always been synonymous with simple activity trackers that look nice, have excellent water resistance, are versatile enough to be worn in different ways, work automatically and keep user involvement to a minimum, and are blessed with stellar battery life. Having reviewed both the Shine 2 and Flash, the 6 months battery life on a single CR2032 cell was more than impressive to me.

But that's about to change with the newest entrant to the Misfit line. The Vapor is the company's first colored touchscreen smartwatch/activity tracker. It follows in the steps of the Phase, the analog watch with fitness smarts, but it changes the Misfit formula a lot more.

New Balance launches the $300 RunIQ Android Wear watch with GPS, Strava, and an Intel processor

Last year at CES, New Balance announced that it would be releasing an Android Wear watch by the end of 2016. The company missed the schedule by a month or two, since the new watch has just been officially unveiled. It's called RunIQ and like the name and the brand behind it, it's focused on running.

The RunIQ packs the 3 features that were hinted at last year: GPS, an Intel processor, and integration with the Strava platform to add a social and competitive element to running. But now we have more specific details. The GPS chip is coupled with a built-in heart-rate sensor that can work for up to 5 hours with continuous monitoring and map tracking.

Garmin launches new fēnix® 5 sports and smartwatch series, adds Uber, nuun, and more apps

We don't often talk about Garmin here, mostly because the company hasn't been a smartwatch or wearable maker in the traditional sense, but it's getting harder and harder to mention any fitness tracker without naming Garmin in some form or another. Its vivosmart lineup, among others, is almost universally loved by everyone who has tried it, its brand is recognizable, hardware is capable and competitively priced, and software experience is getting better and better, making it the second largest smartwatch maker in Q3 2016 according to IDC.

One of the flagships of Garmin's smartwatch line-up is the fēnix series, a watch that combines everyday activity and sleep tracking, smartwatch notifications and features, super detailed exercise tracking across different types of sports (running, swimming, cycling, hiking, golf, ski, snowboard, paddle sports, and so on), GPS logging, water resistance up to 100m, continuous heart-rate monitoring, and more.

[Deal Alert] Motorola's fitness-oriented Moto 360 Sport is just $103.99 on Amazon right now ($96 off)

The Moto 360 Sport goes on sale pretty frequently, but that doesn't discount the fact that it's a pretty good smartwatch, especially for exercise use (if you couldn't already glean that from the name and the design). Currently, you can grab a white 360 Sport on Amazon for just $103.99 - that's nearly 50% off its MSRP.

AsteroidOS is an open source project that wants to save your smartwatch from obsolescence

Android was once the darling of the open source community, though you'd be forgiven for forgetting that - these days its commercial elements seem to be all that make the news. One developer is hoping that community can save the smartwatch, or at the very least, breathe a little new life into existing designs. Florent Revest, a French computer science student, released the 1.0 alpha version of AsteroidOS today. It's ready to run on multiple Android Wear devices: the original LG G Watch, the Watch Urbane, the Asus ZenWatch 2, and the Sony Smartwatch 3.
