The Hyetis Crossbow Is The First Swiss Smartwatch, Has A 41MP Camera, And Costs $1,200

No one makes watches quite like the Swiss, and the same seems to be true of smartwatches. While competitors tout the ability to check text messages and emails without having to pull out a phone, which is pretty convenient, or answer calls just by holding your hand to your ear, which is admittedly kind of awesome, the first Swiss smartwatch promises a 41MP camera. If James Bond were in the market for a smartwatch, he'd put down a pre-order for the Hyetis Crossbow.

Six Months With The Pebble Smartwatch: Greatly Improved, But Still A Tough Sell

It's been a bit less than six months since I got my Kickstarter-edition Pebble, and starting today you can waltz down to your local Best Buy and pick one up yourself. In that time I've gone from impressed, to slightly less so, then considerably more so, and now somewhat ambivalent. The Pebble has been much improved since its debut, thanks to consistent updates from the manufacturer and no small amount of third-party support.

Pebble 1.12 Update Adds Bug Fixes, Swanky White Version Now Shipping To Backers

Pebble is having a big day. A few hours after announcing their first retailer partnership with the omnipresent Best Buy, they've kicked out another software update for the smartwatch, which adds bugfixes and... well just bugfixes, and now the screen backlight flashes when you plug it into its charger to let you know that it's charging. More changes will become apparent when the next version of the Pebble Kit SDK is sent out.

Pebble Smartwatch Coming Exclusively To Best Buy For $149.99 – Get It Online Today, July 7th In Stores

After taking Kickstarter by storm, the Pebble smartwatch went on to become a real product. Hey, that's more than you can say for some Kickstarter campaigns. The backers have had their devices for a while now, and the time has come for Pebble to expand. First stop: Best Buy. The Pebble is going to be exclusive to Best Buy, at least for the time being.

You're probably aware, but the Pebble is a slick (kind of) smartwatch with an e-paper display.

Sony's SmartWatch SW2 Is Bigger, Better, And Coming In September, With An Aluminum Body, New UI, And NFC Pairing

Believe it or don't, there were smartwatches before the Pebble and its host of contemporaries. While it's debatable that Sony's second-gen watch was the best of them, it was certainly among the most high-profile watches, and the company has returned to its old stomping grounds now that the segment has exploded. The SmartWatch 2 (stylized "SW2") includes a bigger, denser display, a revised software suite that more naturally mimics Sony's Android phones, and embedded NFC.

Pebble Android App Updated To 1.8.2 With Support For Google Hangouts Notifications

Pebble smartwatch owners have been without a reliable way to receive notifications for Google instant messages since Hangouts was launched at Google I/O, at least if they rely on first-party solutions. Today's update to the official Pebble app changes that, with native support for the Hangouts app for both messages and video Hangout requests. If you've remained faithful to the older Google Talk app, it's still supported as well.

Other changes are sparse: the official changelog mentions only the standard stability tweaks and some developer-side improvements.

AGENT: The 'World's Smartest Watch' Completes Its Kickstarter Campaign With More Than Ten Times Its $100,000 Goal

I think we can officially say there's a market for smartwatches. The first major player in the game was Pebble, which received a massive $10 million in funding throughout the duration of its Kickstarter campaign; now, Agent joins the million dollar club, as it just hit $1m mark – a full ten times its $100k goal (which it actually blasted through in less than 12 hours).

For those who may not have heard of Agent, it's supposedly the smartest of all smartwatches.

[New App] Pebble Phone Ringer Switcher Is The First Of Many Wrist-Mounted Android Widgets

The Pebble Smartwatch's utility was somewhat limited when it launched, thanks to an API that only supported notifications and data going from your phone to the watch, not the other way around. The last update to the API fixed that, and now Pebble has at least some degree of control over a connected phone. Pebble Phone Ringer Switcher from noted developer Faruq Rasid is the first Pebble app we've seen take advantage of this, at least on the Play Store.

Agent, The Self-Proclaimed "World's Smartest Watch," Smashes $100,000 Kickstarter Goal In Less Than 12 Hours

Who said smart watches were a fad? The intelligent wristwear market, while not exactly new, is iron-hot, as evidenced by everyone and their mother's intentions to enter it. The real winners now are those companies able to introduce stop-gap products that fill the void between, say, Pebble and Google's rumored Android watch. The insatiable demand for these halfway smartwatches is perhaps epitomized by the early success of Secret Labs's and House of Horology's Agent watch, a Kickstarter project which blew through its $100,000 goal in less than 12 hours today.

Pebble SmartWatch SDK Updated With Two-Way Communication For Watch Apps

In our review of the Pebble SmartWatch, we only had two complaints about the software: a lack of apps, and a lack of utility. The second point stems from the fact that the Pebble can only receive alerts from your phone, and it can't send information back. Both issues have now been addressed by the Pebble SDK. Developers have been cranking away on watch apps for some time, but the latest SDK update adds AppMessage, a method of implementing bi-directional communication for Pebble.
