LG Announces Optimus 3D Max/Cube: 1.2GHz Dual-Core, 16GB Of Storage, And 3D Video Editing - Coming To Korea In March, Europe Later

Mobile World Congress is just around the corner, and it looks like LG is trying to make a splash before the stampede of news and new devices come flowing out during the show. Yesterday they announced three new phones, and today, a fourth: the Optimus 3D Max (or Optimus 3D Cube if you're in Korea).

The spec sheet, while not lackluster, isn't exactly inspired in light of the quad-core Tegra 3 devices we'll see during the show:

[CES 2012] Intel And Lenovo Announce Medfield-Powered K800 Lenovo Smartphone, Headed To China In Q2

Intel and Lenovo just announced the world's first Intel-powered Android smartphone: the K800. It utilizes Intel's Medfield mobile platform, with what we assume is the Atom Z2460 1.6GHz processor. Intel and Lenovo claim that the new Medfield platform is a "no compromise" mobile processor in terms of performance and battery life, though no exact figures were quoted. It actually looks pretty similar to Intel's reference device, and will be available in China (no US availability announced) some time in Q2.

Intel also demoed said reference device on stage, but didn't tell us anything we don't already know. Intel was keen on showing off the battery life of its reference device, which while it only has a 1440mAh battery, manages an impressive 8 hours of 3G talk time, and a full 5 hours of 3G web browsing.

[CES 2012] Fujitsu Has A Quad-Core Tegra 3 Smartphone In The Works And Yes, It Sports Ice Cream Sandwich

Hot on the heels of the unveiling of Fujitsu's ES IS12F, the world's thinnest smartphone, a leaflet circulating at CES today indicates that Fujitsu has something even more awesome in the works. It would seem that Fujitsu is on the brink of revealing a (yet unnamed) smartphone that packs not only Ice Cream Sandwich, but a quad-core Tegra 3 processor.

Little else is known about the mystery device, but judging from the specs we have so far, this phone sounds like a dream machine. It's unclear whether we'll get to see the device at CES, but we'll be here to cover any and all details as they are revealed.

Lenovo, "the world's number two PC company," has just introduced a bevvy of new Android-powered devices, emphasizing their specs and compatibility with Lenovo's "Personal Cloud," which promises to make the company a "personal cloud solution." Liu Jun, Senior VP and President of Lenovo's Mobile Internet and Digital Home business group, explained the significance of the Personal Cloud:

Samsung Announces Next Generation Of Mobile Processors With The 1.5GHz Dual-Core Exynos 4212

In a press release earlier today Samsung announced an update to its Exynos line of mobile processors with the release of the Exynos 4212 a 1.5 GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A9 chip. The chip is designed on Samsung's advanced 32nm low-power processes and is intended for the burgeoning smartphone and tablet market. According to Samsung's release the Exynos 4212 will deliver a full 25% increase in processing power over the previous chip and will feature an enhanced GPU capable of delivering 50% higher 3D graphics performance. All this sounds great, but if the battery dies before you can even start the game then an increase in power is useless.

Samsung Unveils The 5.3-inch Galaxy Note With A 1280 x 800 Super AMOLED Display And An "S Pen"

No, that isn't a typo in the title - Samsung has indeed just unveiled a 5.3-inch phone, the 'Galaxy Note', at IFA 2011 to join the rest of its growing Galaxy family. The insanely big device doesn't just stop there, though, as Samsung has paired it with one of its Super AMOLED displays at a resolution of 1280 x 800. That happens to be the same resolution as my 13-inch laptop, so you get an idea of just how sharp this thing is, with a pixel density of 285ppi.

Running the show from behind the scenes, there is a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and 1GB of RAM.

IDC: Apple Is The Largest Smartphone Manufacturer In The World With Samsung Close Behind

Hot on the heels of the report from the analytics firm Canalys, market research firm IDC has reaffirmed Apple as the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. Unlike the findings from Canalys, which grouped smartphone OS platforms together irrespective of manufacturer, IDC's study has broken down shipment numbers in Q2 2011 according to device vendors. The findings (courtesy of Engadget) are as follows:

Smartphone shipments in Q2 2011 totalled 106.6 million, an increase of 42.2 million from last year. Out of that pie, Apple's total number of smartphones shipped is 20.34 million putting them in first place with a share of 19.1%.

Nielsen: Android Runs On 37% Of All US Smartphones And 50% Of All New Smartphones Sold

NielsenWire has released yet another one of their bar and pie chart-filled smartphone surveys for the US this morning, and it's just more good news for Android. Here's a quick breakdown of some of the key stats Nielsen compiled:

  • Android now represents 37% of all US smartphones
  • 50% of smartphones sold in the month of March were Android phones
  • 31% of consumers said their next purchase will be an Android phone, compared to 26% one year ago. Android now leads iOS here as well (iOS accounts for 30%, down from 33%)
  • 20% of consumers don't know which OS their next smartphone will run

Another interesting tidbit the survey revealed is that Blackberry has finally dropped to third place in all three of the comparisons Nielsen publishes (future purchases, March purchases, total market share).

Business Insider Publishes Results Of Smartphone Survey: Android Dominates, And Lots Of People Hate Apple

If you're a frequent reader, you may remember hearing about the Business Insider Smartphone Survey, which we called out for its biased title and questions. As promised, they have posted the results, and much as we expected, Android absolutely dominated.

  • 51.4% of respondents use an Android device (versus 33% for iPhone).
  • 54.4% said their next smartphone purchase would be an Android device, compared to a (still impressive) 33.6% for the iPhone.
  • 55.7% of Android owners "hate Apple" (heh). 31.2% of Android owners would consider an iPhone if it played better with non-Apple devices.
  • Platform was the most important feature when choosing a smartphone with 38.2%, while features came in second at 33.1%.
