Thumbstar Games, whose previous work appears to be an Android version of that game they played in Hackers, has launched its new shooter/tower defense game for Android, Meltdown on Mars. The game is reminiscent of Gun Bros., with some tower defense elements adding an extra layer of strategy to the game.

The game utilizes a dual-virtual-joystick system to move and shoot. You can also create and upgrade towers to help you defeat the incoming invasion. The game is a nice blend of action and strategy. Straight tower defense games are fun, but can get a little tedious once you've settled into a strategy and wait for the automated enemies to come flooding in.

The developers at int13.net introduced Shogun Rise of the Renegades to the Android Market today, bringing "bullet hell" gameplay reminiscent of Japanese arcade games from the 1990s to the palm of your hand.

For those not in the know, the Japanese sometimes call "bullet hell" style games "danmaku," referring to insane shooters in which players can generally expect most of the screen to be filled with flying bullets.

Shogun definitely delivers on this reputation, providing a continuous stream of chaotic scrolling shooter action. One of Shogun's claims to fame is its dynamic, addictive gameplay - it's easy to get hooked on the manic action and crisp, retro environments offered by Rise of the Renegades, and  the game keeps things interesting with hours of entertainment.

OrangePixel (the geniuses behind Meganoid and Stardash) released a new game to the Market today, bringing a retro-inspired side-scrolling shooter to Android with Neoteria.

In the words of OrangePixel, Neoteria is a shmup: a classic horizontal shoot em up. The game relies on a quick thumb, meaning players will need to have plenty of finger strength to shoot through the thousands of aliens and multiple, 80s-inspired environments Neoteria offers.

OrangePixel warns that "100% completion is not for the weak or casual gamer," noting that as players progress, they can unlock new pilots and difficulty modes, or discover hidden worlds.

Besides being a fun, dynamic time waster, Neoteria is optimized for the Xperia PLAY, making its button-mashing gameplay that much more versatile.

Gamelion released the highly anticipated dual joystick shooting game Monster Shooter to the Android Market today. The game is a dynamic, quirky shooter that takes players to various alien planets, and gives them a wide arsenal of weapons, power ups, missions, and competitive rankings a la OpenFeint.

Monster Shooter puts players in the shoes of an alien named Dum Dum, whose cat has been stolen by an opposing alien race. Following the most reasonable course of action, Dum Dum ventures out with an impressive selection of weaponry, and a bloodthirst that will eliminate heaps of enemy aliens across a ton of levels.

Introduction

Half Breed, by iNoko Studios, is an alien-themed shooter that just landed on the Android Market today. As the title indicates, you play the role of a mysterious being who wakes up to find that he is now half-man and half-alien. If that wasn't enough, this creature has a whole arsenal of crazy powers, and is bent on seeking revenge against the people who made him this way.

Gameplay

There are two different game modes in Half Breed, story and multiplayer. Unfortunately, multiplayer isn't true online gameplay, as the only way to take advantage of it is to play with a friend over a Wi-Fi connection.

I've had an odd interest in the undead for as long as I can remember, and I could make a hipster-esque statement and say that I thought zombies were badass long before anyone else did, but I won't go that far. I've been planning for some sort of zombie apocalypse for quite a while now, so if anything starts to go down, you'll probably be safe with me. Needless to say, I'm also in love with any sort of zombie game and when one comes my direction, it goes up against hard criticism. That being said, Dead on Arrival by N3V Games scores some pretty high marks overall.

Looking to give players "the ultimate 3rd person shooter" experience, Glu Mobile has released Frontline Commando to the Android Market.

Frontline Commando charges players with avenging fellow soldiers who fell during a renegade attack on a ruthless dictator. Frontline includes a wide array of weaponry and stunning "console quality visuals," making it a compelling and dynamic war action game. The thrill of warding off enemy forces is enhanced by sophisticated physics, destructible objects, and a variety of challenging missions.

Considering the fact that Frontline Commando is absolutely free in the Android Market, there's no reason not to give this 3rd person shooter a try.

Orange Pixel, creators of the well-received "Meganoid", just released a platform/shooter called "INC".

There are 40 levels of robot blasting action, and 8-bit styling and sound effects. It's sort of like Mega Man. The description claims "hard-but-fair gameplay," so there's retro difficulty to go along with those retro graphics. Xperia Play owners will be glad to hear that all their fancy buttons are supported (like you couldn't tell from the giant video thumbnail).

8-bit shooters don't really need a story, but just for good measure: "[In] The year 2135, the world is ruled by Corporations, humans are slowly being replaced by robots and machines, and the most powerful humans are now looking for ways to transfer their souls into robots, for eternal life." TL;DR: "Shoot things.

Unity3D has paved the road for some seriously stunning mobile games, and as smartphones and tablets continue to become more powerful, 3D shooters and other graphics-intensive apps will finally begin to reach their full potential.

A perfect example of this is MadFinger's latest project: Shadowgun, which we last saw in May. The OTS (over-the-shoulder) shooter puts you in the shoes of John Slade, an assassin hired to surreptitiously sneak into Dr. Edgar Simon's heavily guarded mansion.

Of course, the game's graphics are the real center of the hubbub - they're just that good breathtaking:

The game will be launching in just 5 days (9/28)...

A couple of days ago, HTC revealed their bootloader unlock portal and started with 1 of the 3 (so far) promised devices - the European Sensation. The EVO 3D  and the T-Mobile Sensation 4G remained MIA for the time being.

Notice how the Sensation was unlocked shortly after receiving an Android 2.3.4 OTA, which apparently gave it its "unlockability." Now remember what happened this morning? Yup - the EVO 3D also got the 2.3.4 update and, you guessed it - it's now unlockable at HTCDev.com.

So, if it's the bootloader unlock you're after, hop on over to HTC's bootloader unlock page to get in on the unlock-y goodness, but remember - it will likely void your software warranty, so proceed at your own risk (as always).
