Update: We're hearing that the update is rolling out now - hit Settings > About phone to see if it's available on your device!

It looks like Gingerbread is finally getting ready to (officially) make its way to the Droid Charge, and, judging by the build number (EP4), it seems to be a slightly updated version of the build that was leaked earlier this month (EP4P).

The update will finally catch the device up to its smartphone peers in terms of Android version, but it will also bring the usual round of bug fixes and enhancements, as well.

  • New Download Manager
  • Enhanced App and Power Management details
  • Improved word selection and copy functionality
  • New UI
  • Added security
  • Updated Calendar Option
  • "Pause," "Wait," and "Password" have been added into the Voicemail speed dial
  • Messaging signature added
  • Hotspot WLAN password is now encrypted
  • Display email attachments from Outlook email
  • Software Upgrade Assistant has been added
  • The volume of the Low Battery Notification has been reduced

A boatload of apps and device features have also been updated and improved.

Ah, the Droid Charge -- the Droid that never should have been. It was the first LTE Droid to hit Verzon and... well, its accomplishments stopped there. In fact, this once-flagship device is still running Froyo, rendering some of its hardware basically useless (like the front facing camera). Fortunately, Gingerbread may be just around the corner for those who bought into the Charge hype, as a new leaked build just landed on MyDroidWorld, courtesy of P3Droid.

While there isn't a changelog of any type, the leak does comes in a variety of options: stock, not rooted; stock, rooted; stock, deodexed, rooted; and deodexed, debloated, rooted.

Yesterday we highlighted a deal with VZW's first LTE phone, the HTC ThunderBolt. If the TBolt isn't your cup of tea, then Amazon Wireless has come through with yet another amazing deal on an LTE phone: the Samsung Droid Charge.

The Charge is still the only Droid branded phone infused with 4G LTE, and now you can get it for basically nothing when you sign up for new service with Big Red.

Specs:

  • 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display
  • 1GHz Hummingbird processor
  • 8MP rear shooter, 1.3MP front
  • 2GB built-in storage
  • 4G LTE
  • Android 2.2

So, if this is the Droid you've been looking for (is that phrase played out yet?) then hit the link below to head over to Amazon Wireless and take advantage of this deal!

The Droid Charge was the first 4G phone with Droid branding to hit VZW, and as such, has been the flagship phone of the Droid lineup since its release back in May. If you were to walk into a Big Red retail store and buy the Charge right now, you would leaving with $300 less than you went in with, and, lets face it, who wants to drop that much coin on a new phone?

Thankfully we have online retailers like Amazon Wireless to prevent us from wasting a ton of money, and they're here to save you a cool $230 on a new Droid Charge -- as long as you're a new Verizon customer willing to sign on the dotted line vowing your loyalty for the next two years.

Yesterday, Skype with video was officially released to the Android Market. There was one problem, though: it was only supported on a small number of seemingly random handsets, like the Nexus S (but not the Nexus S 4G), Desire S, Xperia neo, and Xperia pro. Thanks to the ingenuity of skilled Android modder 0mie, that's no longer the case.

f-1024-4

With 0mie's modded version of Skype 2, video chat should be fully working on a number of recent phones, including the Thunderbolt (running Gingerbread), Sensation, EVO 3D, Galaxy S II, and Droid Charge. In theory, this should work on any phone running Gingerbread (as long as it has a front facing camera, of course), so if you test it out on any phone that we haven't already mentioned, drop us a line in the comments with the results.

If you're a Droid Charge owner, there's a good chance you're wondering when Gingerbread will be coming your way. After all, we've heard many Gingerbread rumors lately - but not a mention of the Charge. Until now, that is.

Well known Android modder P3Droid has apparently gotten his hands on a leaked version of Gingerbread for the Charge, hooked up the video camera, and proceeded to show us what to expect from the update - including a demo of Netflix actually working.

Other than what you see here, there's little info surrounding this update. There's no word of when it's supposed to hit the masses, but judging by the video, everything looks to be quite polished, so we can probably expect it fairly soon.

It looks like VZW has an update ready for the Droid Charge that should be hitting handsets pretty soon - but it's not Gingerbread. It's mostly a bug fixer, so don't expect anything too astounding to come from it, although the info on Big Red's site does make mention of improved switching between 3G and 4G LTE, which was one of the biggest gripes we had with our review unit.

Other fixes include improved battery life, improved GPS performance, an updated email folder structure, better email and calendar sync with Exchange, and a lot more.

There's no word on when this update will be hitting devices, but you can have a look here for more info.

If you have been patiently waiting for the first 4G LTE DROID to hit Verizon's network after last month's 4G outage that delayed the original release, you'll be pleased to know that your wait ends tomorrow, as the Samsung DROID Charge is finally set to hit the shelves of Big Red.

The DROID Charge has been subject to heavy criticism due to its high price tag and lackluster hardware (read: lack of a dual core processor), and even got a not-so-great review from our own David Ruddock. Regardless, this will most likely be the new flagship device for VZW, but it's going to have a tough hill to climb if it wants to successfully compete with any of the previous DROIDs.

We all know about the update woes that owners of Samsung handsets have faced over the past several months - owners of the VZW Fascinate are still waiting on their update to Froyo. It looks that wait may be coming to an end as the source code has finally shown up on Samsung's Open Source Release Center. Even if the official OTA doesn't hit phones soon, you can rest assured that XDA devs will be hard at work hacking and compiling this source, so you'll be able to enjoy all of the Froyo goodness that you can handle soon enough.

Are you sitting down? Assuming you're reading this on your PC, I would imagine that you are. Unless, of course, you have a standing desk, in which case I urge you to sit down. We've seen it pop up on the web but haven't really heard anything about its price. This time, however, it looks like it made an in-store appearance at Walmart and brought a price tag along with it. Are you ready for this? $298.88 with a two-year agreement. No, that's not a typo.

Releasing a phone that's already somewhat behind the curve at this price is just ridiculous.
