Good news for those of you that were hoping to root your EVO the minute you tear it free from the box: the instructions and files needed in order to root the device have been officially released online.
User ‘toastcfh’ over at XDA-Developers, who’s been providing us with teaser images and video of his rooted EVO for the last couple of weeks, has come clean with detailed instructions on how you can get sweet, sweet root access on your EVO.
I’m not sure what Google was expecting, but when you give a phone out to a room of hackers, chances are the phones going to be hacked. First, we saw the EVO get rooted shortly after I/O and now it seems Froyo has been ported over as well. All this before the phone’s even hit the store shelves.
The details haven’t been publicly released yet as hacker ‘toastcfh’ over at the XDA-Developers forums continues to refine the process to ensure it’s easy enough for most people to perform.
Prospective EVO 4G owners: go ahead and shave $29.99 off your expected monthly bill from Sprint. We’re still over a week away from the official launch of the phone, and it seems that it’s already been rooted. The hackers responsible for the root haven’t released many details at the moment, but they did provide us with several pictures and a video of the hack.
For those unaware (all 3 of you left?), ‘rooting’ a phone is another way of saying that users can now have complete access to a phones operating system (you can see more details here). We’ve covered rooting in the past, and most of the more popular Android phones have been rooted for a while, but the EVO 4G is a bit different.
If you are a Sprint Hero owner and want the latest official 2.1 update baked into a custom ROM with root, then you currently have only one alternative - the Fresh ROM.
There are pretty much only 2 main Sprint Hero custom ROMs - DamageControl (by damageless and TrevE) and Fresh (by flipz). Both are very good, have an excellent track record, and great communities behind them.
I've personally been using DamageControl on my Hero but post-official 2.1 update, flipz has moved a little faster than damageless and TrevE, and incorporated it into his Fresh ROM pretty much on the next day, while DamageControl is still stuck at 2.08.1.
We are still trying to assemble all the bits and pieces but it looks like Sprint was preparing the 2.1 upgrade for tomorrow, May 14th but uploaded the updater and the new instructions today.
A user of SDX-Developers by the name of chrisfeltdrum was downloading what he thought was an older, previously released in February update, when he realized the OS version he upgraded to was actually Android 2.1.
Chris immediately posted this information to the SDX-Developers forum for confirmation, and in a matter of minutes other users have confirmed the update was indeed official 2.1 and not the old Feburary release.
Many of you are complaining about Android 2.1, even though Sprint is well within the promised June timeline.
I understand - it's frustrating to see phone by phone get upgraded with your Hero sitting on the sidelines, ever since its release last October.
I know how you feel but the truth is, we don't know whose fault it is.
Maybe it's Sprint's evil plan for everyone to buy more EVO 4Gs.
Maybe it's HTC's evil plan for everyone to buy more EVO 4Gs.
Maybe it's HTC's development/testing problems that have left Sprint powerless in this situation.
Maybe. We just don't know.

If you have not heard yet, Cyanogen and gang have finally released CyanogenMod 5 for your G1/Mytouch 3G. If you are new to using ROMs, make sure to follow the instructions carefully, so you don't brick your phone. Anyone who has used ROMs, whether Cyanogen’s or not, also needs to follow the instructions as you will need to install DangerSPL which has bricking potential (unless you already have it installed).
This release is labeled as experimental - keep it in mind as there could be some bugs. Cyanogen has already stated that reported bugs will be addressed over this weekend and any further reports can be made on the CyanogenMod forums.
