Google Play Store Website Adds Support For At Least 20 New Languages, Indicates A Large International Rollout

Open the flood gates and let the Play Store news come in this morning! It looks like Google has updated support of its web store at play.google.com for at least 20 new languages. One of our esteemed tipsters pointed out today that the languages list has gotten bigger. Much bigger. We checked it out for ourselves and it's true.

As you can see the list of languages is much, much longer. Including such hits as Filipino, Kiswahili and the very odd and remote dialect of English (United Kingdom).

[Update: Rolling Out June 4th] The Verizon 4G Xoom Is Finally Getting Its Official Ice Cream Sandwich Update

Finally, after a bajillion years of waiting, the first Android tablet is finally getting its very own update to Android 4.0, finally. Finally. As some of you may recall, the WiFi model received an ICS update months ago, but the 3G/4G version, which has been plagued with problems since launch, including lack of advertised flash support and an actual 4G modem, is only just now set to get the OTA update.

The update, thankfully, will be to version 4.0.4, so none of this lagging a few point releases behind. The update should be rolling out "soon", so if it follows Verizon's usual rollouts for the device, Xoom LTE owners should expect to see it anywhere between now and a week or so from now.

Firefox Beta 14 Goes Live On The Play Store, Brings Along A New UI, Flash Support

The browser wars wage on in the mobile space just as it does on the desktop. Today, Mozilla fires another shot across Chrome's bow with Firefox 14 beta. The update, available in the Play Store, comes complete with a new UI, Flash support, and a bunch of other little improvements.

The new version comes with an updated minimum requirement of Android 2.2 or higher. The new UI shows its Froyo-y heritage, too. While the whole app has seen a redesign that's pretty slick, it still uses the old-style menu button interface that's been outmoded since the release of Ice Cream Sandwich it uses no deprecated menu styles whatsoever and conforms to the UI standards of whatever OS version it is running on.

Samsung Quietly Begins Rolling Out ICS To Unlocked Galaxy Notes

The update for devices running Gingerbread to the latest Ice Cream Sandwich have been erratic at best. Although Samsung has promised updates for its smartphones and tablets, the overall rollout has been quite unpredictable with different markets getting upgrades before others.

There have been numerous indications that the Galaxy Note would be receiving an update to ICS at some point, however aside from the occasional leak there has been no official announcement. It looks like Samsung is finally starting to get their act together, as Devin Balentina reports that he has just received an ICS update notification for his Note.

Archos Releases A Firmware Update (4.0.6) For The 80/101 G9 Tablets, Fixes A Variety Of Bugs

The Archos tablets may not be the best in class in terms of hardware or feature sets, but the most recent round of tablets won us over a bit by leaving Ice Cream Sandwich largely untouched. Today the tablet gets a little sweeter as Archos is rolling out an update for the slate's firmware that fixes a variety of bugs.

Version 4.0.6 - May 3rd, 2012

  • Wi-Fi: fix more disconnect cases happening on some access points
  • GPS: increase stability of GPS
  • HDMI: do not propose overscan setting when TV supports underscan
  • muSD: improve reliability of card insertion detection
  • muSD: fix read/write permission issue occurring with some applications
  • Applications: fix platform reboot occurring sometimes after a while when using high CPU demanding applications

To clarify, as we know this will cause some confusion, this is not Android 4.0.6, which is not out yet.

Sprint Rolling Out A Fix (FD02) For That Pesky No Data Problem For Galaxy Nexus Users

Remember that problem Galaxy Nexus devices were having on Sprint where owners couldn't get any connection to any data network at all? Well, if you happened to be one of those owners, how could you forget? Worry not, though! Sprint just announced it will be rolling out a fix over "a 1-2 day period."

You'll need to be connected to a WiFi network to do anything (though this shouldn't be new to you if you're affected by this problem). Hopefully this will be the end of the data issues for Galaxy Nexus owners on Sprint. If you've been among those affected, let us know in the comments if this fix works for you.

Verizon Announces Expansions To A Ton Of California Markets, Including Fresno, Sacramento, And San Francisco Bay Area (Plus Reno)

Say what you will about Verizon's data plan costs (and we all will), but at least the company works for that money. The LTE rollout continues as Verizon announces expansions to what professionals are calling "a whole lot" of California markets, as well as Reno, Nevada. Most have already had LTE, but if you've ever yelled in frustration when you lose that precious LTE signal while driving down Highway 99 in Fresno, your commute is about to get easier.

[Updated x2: Staten Island, St. Louis Now Live] AT&T Set To Activate LTE In 12 New Markets

AT&T's long, drawn out game of catch-up with Verizon is moving one step closer to completion. According to AT&T, Cleveland, New Orleans, Staten Island, and 9 other cities will be added to the list that will taste the sweet LTE waters "soon." The 12 markets are scheduled to receive LTE in "April, May and into the early summer."

Update 4/3/12: Muncie, Bloomington, Bryan-College Station are live.

Update 4/11/12: St. Louis and Staten Island are live.

Sprint Says No More WiMax Devices Ever, Promises To Launch 15 LTE Devices By Year's End

It's only been a couple years since the EVO launched as not only the first WiMax phone, but the first "4G" phone (by carrier reckoning). Now, though, Sprint says that not only will there be no more WiMax phones, which we knew earlier, but no more WiMax devices at all. That means hotspots and tablets will also lack any WiMax antennae. Don't worry, though. Sprint has promised 15 LTE devices by year's end.

Sprint's LTE plans have been no secret, although not without a fair amount of bumps in the road.  Still, Sprint insists that its LTE plans are on schedule.

[For Real This Time] Samsung Galaxy S II Is Getting A Really Real ICS Update In Some European Markets And Korea Today

Straight from the horse's mouth and not yanked within minutes this time, Samsung has announced that an ICS update for the Galaxy S II (international variant) will be rolling out today throughout European markets including Poland, Hungary,  and Sweden, and also in Korea. The update will "gradually roll out to other markets."

Of course, most of our readers are in the U.S. and, as you're probably used to hearing by now, "other markets" includes you and "gradually roll out" means "we'll get to you when we get to you". While U.S. Galaxy S II phones are based on the same hardware, there are some key differences that mean the update will take a little while longer.
