We've already seen the RAZR M land on the nation's largest carrier. Now, Verizon is adding the other two RAZRs we knew were coming. The DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR MAXX HD, apart from single-handedly breathing new life into my caps lock key, will be arriving on October 18th. The former will run you $199 on a new two-year contract. If you're looking for some extra battery life from your kevlar-coated phone, the MAXX version will sport a hefty $299 price tag. Read More
According to a Czech press release unearthed by The Verge, Microsoft may be readying native Office apps for Android. As of right now, the only programs that have mobile versions on the Play Store are OneNote and Lync. Otherwise known as "the ones very few people care about." If this report is to be believed, though, we may see native versions of the entire Office suite.
According to the Verge's translations, Microsoft said this:
"In addition to Windows, Office will be also available on other operating systems, Windows Phone, Windows RT, Mac OS, Android, iOS and Symbian"
Redmond, by way of the Czech Republic, also pointed out that there would be new versions of its Office Web Apps. Read More
Google's chief release engineer Jean-Baptiste Queru just announced via the Android Building group that version 4.1.2 of Android is being released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) today.
The release follows Android 4.1.1, which was the final version of Jelly Bean, and is marked as minor. The build number, which we spotted in the logs yesterday, is JZO54K, while the AOSP tags are android-4.1.2_r1 and jb-mr0-release.
It's also a good time to bring up the fact that the LG Nexus prototype that we saw yesterday was also running 4.1.2. Read More
Google has once again updated the Android platform distribution numbers. The numbers, released right on schedule today, show Gingerbread still leading the pack at 56% of devices (down from 57.5% last month), with Jelly Bean crawling up the ladder to 1.8%, up from 1.2% last time.
The two most important stat changes from last month, Gingerbread and Jelly Bean, are somewhat disappointing – both shifting at a lower rate than last cycle, but promised updates and leaked devices we may or may not see in the near future will likely help those numbers along. Read More
Amtrak, aiming to give you a "new way to take the train," released an official app to the Play Store recently.
The (logically named) Amtrak app allows passengers to plan their entire train excursion, from buying tickets (which can be displayed right on your device) to navigating to a nearby station, changing/upgrading seat selections, checking train schedules, and using an Amtrak Guest Rewards account.
"Optimized for Android," the app carries a holo-ish interface with swiping tabs, proper navigation and scrolling, and all the visual flair you may expect from an app in line with Android's design guidelines. Read More
There may have been a bit of a false start recently, when a Sprint employee took to the community forums to announce that the rollout of Jelly Bean for the Nexus S had begun. Maybe the rep confused the Nexus S for the Galaxy Nexus, as we hadn't heard any reports that users had received the OTA for the older of the two Nexii. Today, though, Sprint has posted in its forums details on the upgrade, including a release date of today, September 11th. Read More
Tonight, when everyone else is sleeping, the folks over at CyanogenMod are hard at work, as always. The team just announced a brand new addition to the slew of CM releases: M-Series. From now on (provided the community approves), the team will begin rolling out builds that are "a bit more stable" at the beginning of every month. Prior to this initial release of CM10-M1, the group did a "soft freeze of the codebase" in an attempt to stabilize the builds, so these should be more reliable than your average release. Read More
You may remember Samsung's Galaxy Victory 4G LTE (formerly known as "Gogh") from some training materials we caught sight of just a few days ago. Well, while the device is still unannounced, good old Sammy has decided to drop the Victory's kernel source ahead of time for anxious developers and tweakers to get started on.
Samsung has had a good track record lately of releasing kernel source just after a device is announced, but releasing the code before we're even supposed to know about a device is pretty impressive. Read More
We're getting closer and closer to Gameloft's newest release title, Wild Blood. We've seen teasers and trailers for the game leading up to this point. Finally, though, we've gotten something resembling a release date and you're in it. Wild Blood will land on the Play Store "in September," so you can expect it anytime between the end of the month and right now!
...Okay, maybe not right now. But soon! Read More
