T-Mobile To Ship Garminfone In June For $199

If you've been waiting for Garmin's half-GPS/half-Android-phone (phonotaur?) Garminfone to drop, you now won't have to wait too much longer.

According to Engadget, T-Mobile is going to start shipping this highly originally named device in June for a relatively steep price of $199.

Update: T-Mobile's garminfone site is now available:

Considering that a superior EVO 4G is rumored to have the same price tag, the Garminfone deal may seem like a steal to only the most directionally challenged of us. Yes, EVO 4G will run on Sprint, but if you want to stick to T-Mobile, why not get a similarly superior Nexus One instead?

Sprint HTC Hero and Samsung Moment Android 2.1 in May
Last Updated: July 31st, 2011

An internal Sprint memo has surfaced showing a new early May release date for both HTC Hero and Samsung Moment Android phones, jonathan76888 on AndroidForums found out.

The memo looks quite legitimate and this time actually lists 2.1 as the update target, compared to the one from 3 weeks ago that referenced a "maintenance release" and promised an April 9th date (followed by rumors of April 16th, all false).

The wait is almost over, guys. In the meantime, I have flashed my Hero with the 2.1 firmware leaked recently and have a very detailed post with all new features and a ton of screenshots coming up in the pipeline.

Motorola customers with Android phones rejoice! It looks like the bulk of you can expect to have Android 2.1 rolled out to your handsets by the Q3 of this year, unless, that is, you own the DEXT (the European Cliq) or, surprisingly, the Devour.

Not a whole lot of surprises here, but it’s nice to a see a carrier be so upfront with their release schedule rather than forcing their users to dredge through seedy internet forums in order to hear what someone’s cousin’s friend’s brother who works at a cell phone stand in the mall said about the next update being released.

The EVO 4G news is continuing to roll in, though I’m using the term ‘news’ loosely. Engadget is reporting today that Sprint’s upper management is talking about a potential June 6th or 13th launch date, with the 13th seeming more likely to get some hot 4G action.

Engadget is definitely one of the more trustworthy gadget blogs out there right now, but they can only peg this information on ‘intel’, so at this point it does not appear that anything is set in stone. When Sprint first announced the EVO 4G, they simply mentioned summer as the target release date which fits this report but I haven’t been able to find anything that has convinced me to remove my skeptic hat.

Here is the long awaited announcement from Sprint/HTC - the Supersonic name is no more and the phone is now called EVO 4G.

It will be released this summer, so roll your tongues back up, pick up your jaws and prepare for the painful wait. Get ready to be taunted by the HTC HD2 (which is very similar but running WinMo) owners, and coming out any day now.

Here are the specs of this monster. It is, indeed, the most impressive phone to day:

  • 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8650 CPU
  • a 4.3" TFT screen, 480x800 resolution
  • TWO cameras - 8MP on the back and 1.3MP on the front
  • DUAL flashes on the back - I got to see what that looks like on the HD2 and it's really blinding
  • 720P video playback and recording using the rear camera and HDTV connectivity via HDMI through an adaptor
  • 1GB internal storage
  • 8GB MicroSD card included, expandable to 32GB
  • 512MB RAM
  • WiMax/4G with support for 8 concurrent users
  • WiFi b/g
  • FM radio
  • Proximity, light, gyro sensors, digital compass, GPS
  • Bluetooth 2.1 A2DP + EDR
  • 1500mAh battery
  • a kickstand - interesting, that's a new and lightweight way of making your phone stay upright - great for watching videos on the huge screen
  • Android 2.1 with HTC Sense
  • Dimensions: 4.8" x 2.6" x 0.5" (122mm x 66mm x 13 mm)
  • Weight: 6 ounces
  • MicroUSB connector

When I visited Mozilla's offices about 6 months ago, I saw a mobile testing station which included about 20-30 different phones lounging around, with their chargers plugged in. I knew something serious was coming soon. There were rumors about Firefox for Mobile for a while but nothing to really show for it. That was then…

Today, however, we know a lot more. Firefox for Mobile, codenamed Fennec, is coming next month (see More Info below) and looks very promising.
