[WTF Japan] NEC Unveils A Water-Cooled Smartphone - With Jewelery - Especially For Women

It's probably not the water-cooled superphone you've been looking for, but Japanese smartphone maker NEC announced the succinctly named Medias X 06E for the NTT DoCoMo network today, the world's first smartphone with a CPU cooled by H2O. Unfortunately, the specs are decidedly middling, and NEC intends to market the device as a "lady's" phone in essentially the same vein as HTC with the Rhyme.

The Medias X 06E packs a quad-core Qualcomm processor clocked at 1.7 Ghz, a 4.7-inch 720p OLED display, and a 13.1 megapixel camera. It comes in two colors, white and pink, and includes an attached light-up faux-jewel pendant.

Sony Announces Xperia Tablet Z – Quad-Core, 6.9mm Thick, And 10.1-Inch 1920x1200 Screen

Rumors have been bumping around the internet for a few days now, but Sony has finally put the speculation to rest. The Xperia Tablet Z has been announced, but only for the Japanese market at this point. The Xperia Tablet Z is the tablet counterpart to the recently announced Xperia Z phones, and it's running Android 4.1 at launch.

The Tablet Z has a 10.1-inch LCD screen at 1920x1200 with Sony's Bravia 2 post-processing engine. Inside, it's packing the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro at 1.5GHz per-core, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (with an SD card slot), and an NFC chip.

[CES 2013] Huawei Unveils Its New Flagship Ascend D2, With 5-inch 1080p Screen, 13MP Camera, And 3000mAh Battery

For better or worse, five inches seems to be the new target for flagship Android devices. Huawei is bringing its game to CES (unlike most manufacturers that are holding back for Mobile World Congress) with the Ascend D2, a new Jelly Bean 4.1 device sporting a 5-inch 1080p LCD panel and the in-house K3V2 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU. Other highlights include a 13MP camera (narrowly beating out Alcatel's One Touch Idol Ultra) and respectable 9.9mm waist. Stylistically, it looks a lot like a beefed-up Galaxy S II, minus the physical navigation buttons.

Perhaps most importantly for power users, the Ascend D2 comes packed with a massive 3,000mAh battery, sliding in just below the Galaxy Note II in total capacity.

HTC One X+ Review: A Mid-Cycle Refresh Makes A Great Phone Even Better

The HTC One X was (and still is) a fantastic device thanks to its solid hardware, excellent build quality, and stunning display. But it's a little long in the tooth, partially because the newest high-end smartphones have both quad-core CPUs and LTE, and partially because in the smartphone world, anything that's 7 months old is (unfortunately) outdated.

That brings us to the HTC One X+, which is more of a mid-cycle refresh than an all-new model. It keeps the same basic frame and the outstanding display, but packs a more powerful version of NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, and the AT&T variant even comes with LTE.

Huawei Shows Off The Honor 2 With 1.4Ghz Quad-Core And 2GB of RAM

Huawei has been steadily increasing its high-end offerings for the last year or so, and their latest offering is the top-of-the-line Honor 2. Last year's model gets upgraded in just about every possible way, starting with Huawei's own quad-core K3 V2 processor clocked at a blistering 1.4Ghz. Pair that with 2GB of RAM and you've got potent hardware in anybody's money... though to put down a pre-order, you'll need some yuan. Pre-orders for the Honor 2 in China will begin later this week, with a price of 1888 CNY, or about $302.

In addition to those high-class innards, the Honor 2 uses a 4.5-inch 720p IPS screen, fitting in just below other flagships.

ASUS Makes The PadFone 2 Official – Sleeker Design, Updated Specs In Tow

At an event in Milan this morning, ASUS made official the PadFone 2 – the tablet/phone combo device that looks to improve on its predecessor while continuing the goal of providing "incredible mobile flexibility." ASUS touts a redesign of both the phone and tablet elements, the integration of which appears to be much more elegant than the original, with the phone sliding vertically into the back of the tablet, ditching the clumsy door of the original PadFone for a sleek dock.

In its release, ASUS emphasizes the PadFone combo's battery first and foremost among its otherwise amped up specs. The PadFone 2 carries a 2140mAh pack, while the tablet component offers an impressive 5,000mAh that should keep things running for quite a while.

Hands-On With LG's New Quad-Core Powerhouse, The Optimus G

Greetings from New York! LG showed off the Optimus G today, their new monster of a phone. If you haven’t heard, it’s the first phone with a 1.5Ghz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. Qualcomm's dual-core chips can hold their own against the quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3, so this should be one of the fastest phones available. It’s also one of the first phones to have a next-gen Adreno 320 GPU, which, again, means it should be really fast.

I got to play around with one for a few minutes, and yes, the real world performance lives up to the specs. Everything is blazingly fast, and animations are buttery-smooth.

Galaxy Note II With Quad-Core Exynos And LTE Coming To Top Five US Carriers In Time For The Holidays

We knew it was happening, but now things are official. The Samsung Galaxy Note II is coming to Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular. This is going to be a big deal, and not just because this phone is physically massive.

The centerpiece of the Note II is the 5.5-inch Super AMOLED HD panel at 1280x720. This screen uses Wacom inductive technology so you can make use of a pressure-sensitive S Pen, which docks neatly in the body of the phone when you're not using it. Whereas the US Galaxy S III used Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4, the Note II will run Samsung's own Exynos quad-core chip.

LG Confirms That The Optimus G Will Launch In The US In November, Carrier Details Absent

LG has confirmed that its upcoming flagship, the Optimus G, will be launching in the United States this November. Carrier partners went unannounced, but given LG's historical relationship with Verizon, we'd hedge our bets there first and foremost, though AT&T could be another likely contender for the first major handset released with a quad-core Qualcomm processor.

We do know the Optimus G is packing LTE, but that it must be courtesy of a discrete radio, as the APQ8064 Qualcomm S4 Pro chipset does not include a cellular modem.

What implications this may have for battery life or CDMA compatibility are unclear, but LG has rather sneakily let slip that there will be regional variants of the G, through a video regarding its camera.
