When we first took a look at Apex launcher, we loved it. One of the better ICS launchers is about to get even better, as the app gets bumped to version 1.2. The update brings, among other things, support for themes and a ludicrously high 10x10 grid of icons on phones. For those of you that like have touch screen phones, but hate how easy it is to tap on things without machine-like precision.

Just when you thought Quickoffice was becoming out of touch with its user base (specifically, with their wallets) the company has released a fairly major update to its two main Android apps.

Specifically, both Quickoffice Pro and Quickoffice Pro HD were today updated to version 5.5.32. The update brings more than a number bump, though; here's the official list of new features:

** PDF ***

  • Add/edit/remove comments
  • Select text and highlight
  • Insert shapes

** DOCUMENTS ***

  • Spellcheck
  • Display charts in .docx
  • Edit line spacing
  • Create and edit tables

** PRESENTATIONS ***

  • Insert numbered lists
  • Display groups of items
  • Duplicate slides in PPTX
  • Insert and rotate extended set of shapes

** IN SPREADSHEETS ***

  • Move, resize and delete charts in spreadsheets
  • Update charts when referenced data is changed in spreadsheets

Though the press release, interestingly enough, is not to be released until next Monday, the updated apps are available now.

Let's be honest, there isn't exactly a shortage of Android apps. What there is a shortage of, though, is quality Android apps. You know, apps with great interfaces, support for new features (such as ActionBar), and formats (tablets, TV, etc.) Part of the problem could simply be that a lot of the people developing (cr)apps for Android aren't experienced developers... or if they are experienced devs, they don't know how to get the most from the OS.

Qualcomm is going to release an upgraded version of its S4 generation Snapdragon chipset in the second half of 2012, the company announced at MWC 2012 today.

The more capable and powerful S4 "Pro" variant of the original dual-core MSM8960 chipset (which can be found in the HTC One X, for example) will feature an Adreno 320 GPU as opposed to Adreno 225 in the regular S4 MSM8960. Before this announcement, Adreno 320 was scheduled to accompany only the quad-core Krait CPUs, like the APQ8064 and the MSM8974 which won't be coming out until late 2012/early 2013.

This is the latest in our Weekend Poll series. For last week's, see Do You Use Live Wallpapers?

We've said it many times before, and I'll say it again: one of the best things about Android is how customizable the entire experience is. One of the easiest and most comprehensive ways to customize your device - aside from rooting and ROMing, that is - is to use a custom launcher such as ADWLauncher EX, GO Launcher EX, and Launcher Pro.

Social butterflies have been enjoying SHAPE Services’ maxed-out instant messaging application IM+ Pro since last year, but the privilege certainly came with a price – it cost $9.99. Recently, however, SHAPE dropped the price to just $0.99, considerably increasing the app’s value.

As a reminder, here’s what IM+ Pro is capable of:

As of yet, we have no idea as to how long this sale will last, so if you’re interested, you might as well pick it up now.

There is no shortage of launcher replacements for Android, but once in a while a new one comes along and takes the launcher experience to a new level. Such is the case with TSF Shell Pro, a new launcher currently in development by a team of developers who call themselves C3D. TSF, their brand, stands for The Special Forces, and special they are - just take a look at what the team cooked up.

Well, this didn't take long. A little while ago, a new app called AppExtractor that can restore individual apps from ClockworkMod backups appeared in the Market seemingly out of nowhere. The app was welcomed by many of us who do custom ROM flashing here and there, sometimes wishing we could only restore a few little things from our Nandroid backups rather than having to restore whole ROMs.

As of today, Titanium Backup, sort of a de facto app in the app backup/restore business on Android, can now do the same thing.

CrashPlan is an amazing service that I've been using for a number of years to back up not only my desktops and laptops, but also all the Linux servers. I can't recommend it enough due to the fact that it's cross-platform (Java), can be headless (client/server architecture), has no storage limitations, can use various configurable destinations (cross-backup across my devices), multiple schedules and backup sets, practically unlimited file versioning, etc, etc - it is literally the best offering on the market that I've tried so far.
