Google Play Books update 3.1.17 is slowly rolling out, and I'm glad to report that it finally brings a feature a lot of you have been dying to see - book uploading directly from your devices. As always, we have the APK which you can install if you don't see the update just yet right below.

What's New

As I already mentioned, you no longer need to go to Google's website to upload your own books - 3.1.17 allows you to upload PDFs and EPUBs directly.

I have a confession to make: as much as I love The Walking Dead, I haven't actually read the comics. Initially this was because I didn't want to have any insight into what was going to happen on the show, but with the past season (or so) TWD creator Robert Kirkman stated that the comics and the show were basically on two different paths. With that, I started on a journey to research the comics and start reading.

On Tuesday night, surprisingly ahead of the usual update-all-the-things-Wednesday, Google released a major revision of the Play Books app for Android, updating it from v2 (2.9.21) to v3 (3.0.15). The changelog, which was shockingly present from the get-go (thank you!), confused me a bit but after digging around, I finally figured out what it means. Oh, and I found another fix that wasn't mentioned.

What's New?

The official changelog is as follows:

  • Added the ability to search the text of original-pages books.

As promised at Google's recent event, textbooks have arrived in the Play Store. They have been tacked on as a sub-section of Play Books, not a completely new area of the store. At present, there is no way to filter within textbooks only, but search seems to work fairly well for finding books on a particular subject.

Both rentals and purchases are showing up in the store, but most books are only offering one or the other.

Google quietly brought Play Books today to four new countries: Austria, Belgium, Ireland, and Portugal. The aforementioned countries only had access to Google Play Apps and Music before, so I'm sure the book lovers among those of you who reside in the four territories are ecstatic.

Google has been very slow to roll out various content stores worldwide. The last time Play Books expanded was all the way back in March and only included one country - Mexico.

If you're in Mexico and love to read books, your potential book collection just got a lot bigger thanks to Google. Naturally, I'm talking about Google Play Books, which is now live in Mexico.

See? Just look at all those Spanish words. There are plenty more where those came from as soon as you enable the feature on your device and start digging around for your favorite titles. There should even be a slew of books for free.

Today, Russia is getting in on the action with Play Books and Movies now available throughout the country. You can purchase books like normal, and movies are available both for rental and purchase.
