At GDC earlier this year, we learned that Sega ported the original Sonic the Hedgehog to Android, giving a new generation of gamers a chance to experience the game that kicked off one of the industry's largest franchises. The port, which finally showed up in the Play Store earlier today (several weeks late), comes with widescreen support and features exclusive to mobile versions, such as the ability to play as Tails and Knuckles.

Karateka

Some games are old, and some games are really old. Karateka falls into the latter category. This side-scrolling karate action game was first developed in 1984 by the creator of Prince of Persia, and today a port enters the Play Store nearly 30 years later. Android gamers can now experience one of the grandfathers of the beat 'em up genre.

Karateka first appeared on the Apple II, and is the product of a time when the number of colors your monitor displayed could be counted on your hands and feet.

SEGA has a rich history of platfoming titles to draw upon as it makes the transition to mobile gaming. Alex Kidd. Sonic the Hedgehog. Nights. But one you might not have heard of is Hell Yeah!, a downloadable title from developer Arkedo Studio. After making waves on the PC and consoles last year, this tongue-in-cheek gorefest has been adapted into what might just be the strangest endless runner on Android.

You play as Ash, spawn of the Dark One, prince of Hell, and somehow, also a rabbit skeleton.

Looking for a platformer that'll bend your brain a bit? AlterEgo: DreamWalker is the 8-bit-on-acid sequel to AlterEgo, and basically just builds on its predecessor. More levels, arguably trippier visuals, and the same switch-up platforming action of the original. The game mechanic, by the way, is simple, but fairly novel: you move your character around the platform world, but on the opposite side in a mirrored position as an 'AlterEgo' (the ghost-looking thingy).

There were a lot of cool things about the early 90s, but few made the impact on gaming that one spiky blue mammal did. Sonic the Hedgehog was SEGA's flagship product, and that original game was (and still is) amazing. Well, at GDC today SEGA broke the news that the original Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Android in April. What's more, it has been completely remastered to be native on Android.

Mega Jump from Get Set Games has tens of millions of installs in the Play Store, so the newly released sequel is kind of a big deal. Mega Run stars the same small red creature known as "Redford" from the last game, but this time you're in an infinite running platformer to collect coins and gems.

The game is very easy to pick up and play. All you have to worry about is tapping to time your jumps properly.

When I was a kid, I always dreamed of having dark hair, wearing a cow skull on my head, and running through a magical land of swinging hammers, random cliffs, floating platforms of land, other areas of extreme peril. Alas, I'm bald, have no bulls to speak of, and this magical land I've dreamed of for so long is nowhere to be found. Just when I thought my lifelong dream was a bust, we stumbled across MANUGANU.

If you subscribe to the vastly-oversimplified concept of a multiverse, then you must believe that, given an infinite set of potential universes, all possible things can and must occur in at least one world parallel to our own. Which means that somewhere, on some alternate version of Earth, Super Mario Bros. stars a textured-yet-pixelated biker named Manley who is trying to track down his kidnapped motorcycle. Kidnapped, that is, by aliens.

It's surprisingly hard to make a mobile game, or at least, a mobile game that's worth playing. Mobile developers are still in their infancy, at least compared with their console and PC counterparts. So when someone manages to release a fun, polished game that works well on smartphones and avoids some of the more glaring pitfalls of the platform, we sit up and take notice. Such is the case with Roller Rally: Snake Pass, an Android port of a popular iOS title from MilkyTea.

If you haven't checked out SilverTree's previous Android titles, the Cordy series and Sleepy Jack, you're missing out on some fantastic mobile games. The graphics and music are excellent, controls are tight, and each one deserves its 4+ Play Store rating. Now you've got a chance to rectify your mistake with Cordy 2, the sequel to the original platformer. Anyone who has spent hours engrossed in a Mario or Rayman title will find something to love here.
