I don't know about you guys, but when I watch TV shows and movies, I keep my eyes peeled for what technology the characters use, what cars are in the background, and so on. Recently, a Really Blue Pixel was spotted in an episode of Will & Grace. And in this week's episode of Modern Family, we noticed a beauty to behold: a panda Pixel 2 XL.

Google says that the Pixel 2 XL display's blue shift is normal, much to owners' dissatisfaction

Chances are that you've already read about Google's comments on the Pixel 2 XL's display, namely the burn-in and color vividness issues. But in that initial post, the blue tint that many Pixel 2 XL screens are being plagued with was not mentioned. Seang Chau, VP of engineering at Google, is saying that this blue shift is normal. However, owners are not taking to this response too kindly.

Android 8.1 feature spotlight: Wallpaper-based themes include tinted notification and power menu shadows, just like the Pixel 2 [Update: Lock screen, too]

The Pixel 2 and 2 XL include a number of small tweaks that other 8.0 devices, even the OG Pixels, don't have. For example, the home screen's theme changes based on your wallpaper. We already knew that was coming to more phones in 8.1, and there's another theme feature from the Pixel 2 that's in 8.1 as well. Accent colors are pulled from your wallpaper for the notification and power menu shadows.

Add history to the Pixel 2 'Now Playing' song identification feature with this app

Just before Google's Pixel 2 launch event, we learned of a great new always-on feature that listens for music and displays the song name and artist on the lock screen without even being asked to do so. Now Playing even works without an internet connection, as it keeps a local file containing identification data for nearly 20,000 songs. It won't be able to name everything you hear out and about, but anything vaguely popular should be picked up.

What if you hear a song you like, but you aren't able to look at your phone before it's finished and a new song is playing?

Make colors on the Pixel 2 and 2 XL more vibrant with Oreo Colorizer [APK Download]

This is a guest post from developer Carlos Lopez, also known as ShortFuse. He’s the developer of SuperOneClick and Fusion.

As detailed in my recent color explainer, the Pixel 2 and 2 XL have a default method of displaying colors in a limited color space. Google’s software doesn’t include an option to force a wide gamut, so I created an app that does it. You can download the new Oreo Colorizer right now, and you don’t even need to root your phone.

How Oreo's color profiles work on the Pixel 2 and 2 XL

This is a guest post from developer Carlos Lopez, also known as ShortFuse. He’s the developer of SuperOneClick and Fusion.

With the Pixel 2's release, it seems many Android fans have their pitchforks in hand, and it's the display that's the target of their criticism. Owners of the 2 XL have noticed color shifting at an angle or laggy pixel response, which causes a "jelly-like" effect. Another complaint, which will be the focus of this article, is what some have called "muted colors." At first glance, it seems like the Pixel 2 isn’t capable of showing as many colors as other OLED devices, but this isn’t true—the colors are intentionally “muted” and locked via software.

Google launched the new Pixel phones with Android 8.0, which is what last year's Pixel's have been running since the update. A new version of Oreo is on the way, though, and you can try it right now. Google inexplicably removed the "Keep WiFi on during sleep" setting from the Pixel 2 (Updated)

File this under bug or under the inexplicable decision column. For the longest time, Android has had an option under WiFi settings that lets you change the default behavior (always on) to turn off WiFi during sleep all the time or only when it's not charging.
