First Google TV OTA Update Rolling Out Along With The Official Google TV Remote Control Android App

The users of Google TV will love Google a little more than usual today, as the company is rolling out the first over-the-air update since launch (I am assuming the OTA my Revue prompted me to download out of the box did not count). Refreshingly, there is no fragmentation present with Google TV (yet?), so both the Logitech Revue and the 2 versions of Sony's GTV should be receiving the updates without delays throughout this week.

Before I describe the updates, I just wanted to note that I received my Revue box last week, installed and configured it in about 20 minutes, with all steps being painless and kind of fun, without any problems I've heard some people having.

Froyo Now Rolling Out To All HTC Legend Variants

Almost a month ago, lucky HTC Legend owners on Vodaphone UK began receiving their Android 2.2 (Froyo) OTA updates. Surprisingly, carrier independent Legend variants, which would normally get updated first, were instead left behind.

Today, HTC finally let everyone in on the party and announced Froyo availability for all Legends:

To check for updates, turn on your device and go to Settings > About phone > System updates.

T-Mobile UK's Samsung Galaxy S Now Receiving Froyo Update Over The Air, T-Mobile US Still Sleeping At The Wheel

While Galaxy S owners here in the States are still (im)patiently awaiting the update to Android 2.2, it looks like users on T-Mobile UK's network are already enjoying the wonders of Froyo. Yes, the update that was initially scheduled for September is only now rolling out.

Luckily, T-Mobile's European brother has (slightly) sweetened the deal with a nice twist - although the update was originally supposed to be made available exclusively through Samsung's Kies software for Windows-based PCs, the carrier has seen fit to add an OTA version into the mix. That doesn't mean Kies has been completely left out of the fun, though - if "reasons out of our [T-Mobile's] control" interfere with the OTA update, users can still hook their phones up to their (Windows-based) computers, start up Kies, and download the update in the same manner most other European carriers are having users do.

The New HTC EVO 4G 3.29.561.5 Update Already Rooted

Earlier, HTC and Sprint announced that they would be rolling out an update for the EVO 4G to fix some issues. Very shortly after the announcement (not the update itself, which literally went live 30 minutes ago, but the announcement of it, mind you), a rooted version of said update was released by the insane, caffeine fueled developers at XDA. Normally, after an update such as this you would have to wait for some kind dev to root the update or take advantage of Unrevoked Forever. Apparently, though, the Android community was ahead of HTC themselves in releasing the OTA update.

LG Ally Update On Verizon Brings Numerous Improvements, But No Froyo

Although no one expected the LG Ally to be the next phone to receive a push to Android 2.2, the announcement of an Ally update really got our hopes up. Still, it’s better than nothing. So, what changes does this update bring Ally users? Check them out below, straight from Verizon’s support page:

HTC EVO 4G OTA Update Comes Out In Time For Launch, Fixes SD Card Problems, Patches Security Issues, But Disables Root - Available Via WiFi As Well

The disappearing SD card issue plaguing a whole slew of HTC EVOs, sometimes resulting in data corruption, has been fixed by an over-the-air update, according to Sprint.

I alerted the community of the issue last week by raising some red flags and starting a few forum threads, and voila - Sprint and HTC scrambled the fix in time for launch. Thank you, everyone, for all your feedback!

The problem with the SD card, which most users incorrectly attributed to the card itself being faulty, ended up being a software bug, so no device returns should be necessary. The bug did affect retail phones, not just the ones passed around at Google I/O, as also previously speculated.

HTC Droid Eris Should Be Getting The Android 2.1 OTA Update Today

It's finally here - today should be the day when Verizon starts rolling out the Android 2.1 OTA (over-the-air) update that we reported on a few days ago.

The update page on Verizon's site, which provides benefits of the new 2.1 OS as well as the update instructions, still mentions "Coming Soon!" as the release date.

That last part, however, apparently means today, May 11th, according to a MobileCrunch tipster who sent in this internal memo screen:

We know it says "tentatively scheduled" and Verizon doesn't exactly have the best track record with releasing 2.1 when it says it is, but we have a hunch that it will actually begin on time this time around.
