[How-To] Got The Android 3.1 Update On Your Motorola XOOM 3G Or Wi-Fi And Lost Root? Here's How To Gain It Back

The Android 3.1 update that's been rolling out to Motorola XOOMs all week (yes, including the Wi-Fi versions) contains quite a few improvements to the Android experience, such as better stability, resizable widgets, and an extended app switcher. However, one thing this update does not contain (and actively cleans up if you had it before) is root.

European HTC Desire HD And Incredible S Getting Gingerbread... Right Now

A couple of months ago, we told you that the HTC Desire HD and Incredible S would be getting an OTA update to Gingerbread, but we didn't know exactly when this would happen. It looks like the wait is over though, because HTC has started rolling out the official OTA update to European users. Unfortunately, there is no official word when the Desire Z will see an update, but we're still expecting it sometime close to the end of the second quarter.

Now there's only one thing left to do: wait. Drop us a line in comments and let us know when this hits your device.

[Updated 5/4/11] Don't Wait For The OTA - Update Your Nexus S To Android 2.3.4 Manually (GRI40 Or GRI54 -> GRJ22)

Wow, this didn't take long at all - the Android 2.3.4 update for the Samsung Nexus S that we were afraid would take a couple of weeks to surface, has already shown up and is ready to be flashed to your Nexus S running 2.3.3 (GRI40 or GRI54).

Just like before, manual update instructions couldn't be simpler, so why wait for your device to be updated OTA (who knows when that will happen) when you can do it all by yourself and get that Google Talk video and voice chat right here and now?

Note: If you don't have GRI40 (2.3.3) or GRI54 (also 2.3.3) and instead have GRH78 (2.3.1) or GRH78C (2.3.2), then head over here and install GRI40 first, then proceed below.

Nexus One Owners, It's Your Turn - Download Android 2.3.4 Now (GRI40 -> GRJ22)

Nexus One owners, tonight you're getting a nice treat in the form of the incremental Gingerbread update 2.3.4, previously available only to Nexus S owners. To recap, ~~the main feature in this release is~~ ~~the video and audio enabled Google Talk~~, although since the N1 lacks a front-facing camera, it's not going to be as useful as it was for the Nexus S.

Update: Err, looks like there is no video or audio support in this release at all, according to those of you with Nexus Ones. Why Google didn't just disable the phone's camera and left it a one-way video and two-way audio is beyond me, but at this point you may as well try the Gtalk version that was extracted from the Nexus S for everyone with Gingerbread to play with.

ATRIX 4G OTA Update Change Log Shows HSUPA And Call Quality Fixes, Coming Soon

ATRIX 4G users rejoice - HSUPA will soon be here, and without any sort of hacky flashing requiring root access. The official Motorola update page for the ATRIX 4G's latest OTA, 4.1.83, has appeared on Motorola's website today. Here's the change log "highlights" according to Moto:

Data Speed
Increased speed at which data can travel on the network.

Data Connection
Improvements to prevent interruptions to data connection.

Screen
Improvements to prevent screen from freezing.

Email
Improved ability for users to receive email notifications so you know when you have a new message. Also, improvements were made so that you are now able to use the same email login to access both MOTOBLUR™ and YouTube.

[Updated] Motorola XOOM Update Adds Google Talk Bluetooth Support And More

According to a tipster at Droid-life, the Motorola XOOM will be receiving a (relatively minor) system update tomorrow, and no - it doesn't include SD card support (exactly why, we can't even begin to guess). Here's the list of changes and additions:

Access and stay connected to Wi-Fi networks with added Proxy support

SSL data transfer with websites is now supported

WPA Pre-Shared Key pass-phrases are now supported when using the device as a Mobile Hotspot

POP 3 HTML emails will display in their entirety

Bluetooth is now supported in Google Talk

Application storage errors will not appear unless the device has reached maximum storage capacity

Safely dock the Motorola XOOM into the docking adapter without interruption

Ability to add and use a Bluetooth mouse

View and import pictures from digital cameras with Picture Transfer Protocol

When using the device in accessibility mode, menus will no longer prompt with sounds

Generally, this update seems to fix a lot of bugs and add support for some more technical items - nothing to get too worked up about.

Motorola DEFY Froyo Update Rolling Out Now

Motorola DEFY owners, you are second-class citizens no more, as T-Mobile's latest OTA software update will infuse your devices with a fresh Froyo taste. Unfortunately, the 112MB upgrade won't free you from the shackles of MOTOBLUR, but it will bring some staple 2.2 features - including Adobe Flash compatibility, WiFi hotspot capabilities, and faster performance - as well as some Motorola additions, such as a task manager and LinkedIn integration.

As the topping on the cake, it appears that all DEFY owners are now able to get the update, not just those lucky enough to have been included in the first "stage" of the roll-out.

What an incredible day for Samsung Fascinate users on Verizon Wireless - earlier this morning, we reported that the coveted Froyo update was finally set to arrive tomorrow, April 21st. Looks like someone at Verizon pulled the trigger a little earlier, as we are seeing multiple reports of the update rolling out as we ~~speak~~ write.

Motorola Rolls Out Froyo For Bravo - Users Applaud

'Tis the weekend for Android device updates: unwilling to let European Samsung Galaxy S owners have all the fun, Motorola announced yesterday that Android 2.2 for the Blur-packing Bravo had begun rolling out in phases. They neglected to elaborate on how exactly these phases are structured, so unfortunately, we don't have much in the way of specific ETA's, but it's likely that you'll seen an update hit your device in the next few days.

Moto was kind enough to detail what exactly this update will change: (click to enlarge, or hit the release notes down below)

As an interesting aside, it's been barely 10 days since Motorola originally put out the call for users that would like to test the software, so I'm surprised it was released so soon.
