It's pretty disheartening to get an awesome new phone only to realize the bootloader's locked down tight. That's means no custom recovery, no ROMs, no custom kernels, no... anything fun. Until, of course, some dedicated developers get ahold of the device in question and bend it to their will. That's exactly what Project FreeGee has done for both the Sprint and AT&T variants of the LG Optimus G.

The tool essentially unlocks the bootloader of both devices, allowing a custom recovery - and eventually, custom ROMs - to be flashed. Of course, it's still in its early stages of development, so a few quirks are to be expected - like invisible text on the bootloader menu (as seen in the above video).

If you're looking to save a hundred bucks or so on the powerhouse Optimus G from LG on either AT&T or Sprint, Amazon Wireless is the place to be. The company just dropped the price of the device for both carriers down to $99, which is a fairly substantial savings for such a high-end device, especially compared to the $199 that both Sprint and AT&T are asking.

For those who may not be aware, the Optimus G has the same hardware guts as the Nexus 4:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 quad-core at 1.5GHz
  • GPU: Adreno 320
  • Network Compatibility: AT&T: GSM quad-band with LTE, Sprint: CDMA with LTE
  • Operating System: Android 4.0.4 with Optimus UI 3.0
  • Display: 4.7" TrueHD IPS+ 768x1280 (320DPI, 15:9)
  • Memory: 2GB RAM / 16/32GB storage (depends on model)
  • Cameras: 1.3MP front, 8/13MP rear (depends on model)
  • Battery: 2100mAh, non-removable
  • NFC: Yes
  • Ports / Expandable Storage: microUSB / microSD (AT&T model only)
  • Thickness: 8.45mm
  • Weight: 145g

As noted above, the big difference between the two is in the area of storage: the AT&T model comes equipped with 16GB on-board, as well as a 16GB microSD card; whereas the Sprint version has 32GB with no microSD card slot.

Update: This upgrade is now live! It will be rolling out over the air starting today. Just be patient. Or repeatedly hit that "Check now" button. Either way.

The Optimus G, LG's powerhouse which serves as the base for the Nexus 4, is going to be released on Sprint on November 11th. At launch, it will receive an OTA to version LS970ZV8, we learned today from internal Sprint documents.

The update will bring the following enhancements and fixes to this quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro beast:

  • Intermittent freezing/locking up
  • Intermittent device reset during  YouTube playback
  • No power on due to Wi-Fi crash
  • Sprint ID icon randomly shows as Mobile ID icon
  • MSL protection for ##DIAG# should be on
  • Reply to All in email: Device was including the sender name, outside of normal.

If you've been aching to buy a new device on Sprint, today may be a good day to stroll through the doors of one of the carrier's retail shops to check out the new arrivals: the LG Optimus G, LG Mach, and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 LTE.

The Optimus G is, of course, the flagship of the bunch, sporting a 4.7" TrueHD IPS+ panel, 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB RAM, and Android 4.0. This device is, for all intents and purposes, a non-Nexus version of the Nexus 4. Even though the OS is now dated, the hardware is still solid and performance should be among the best in its class.

It's a big day for AT&T devices! For starters, the headlining LG phone that's managed to grab our attention as the best not-a-Nexus device the company has put out in recent memory. The LG Optimus G goes on sale today on the nation's #2 carrier for $199 with a two-year contract. Of course, for $100 more you can pick up a Nexus 4 from the Play Store, though you'll lack LTE. It really depends on how much you value stock Android over an extra 4G radio. Conundrum, eh?

Also launching today is the James Bond phone: the Sony Xperia TL.

For CDMA users, the GSM-exclusive Nexus 4 can be a bit of a bummer. However, if you're looking for the same high-powered specs without leaving the Now Network, you can get the Optimus G which David was actually pretty impressed by. Right now, Wirefly and Sprint are both accepting pre-orders for this device, though the former is offering it for about $50 cheaper than you would pay getting it straight from the carrier.

Of course, that's with a new two year contract or an upgrade on your existing line. Still, it's a nice little chunk of change to have knocked off.

We've just confirmed with Sprint that the Optimus G will be available on the Now Network on November 11th, for $199 on a 2-year agreement. Pre-orders begin on the 1st of November.

The Optimus G, as a quick refresher, is the first mass-market phone to contain a Qualcomm S4 Pro quad-core processor, which by all accounts is currently the most powerful mobile chipset on the market. I've been using the G for a few days now, and I have to say, it is fast. We'll have our review of the Optimus G for AT&T and Sprint up some time this week.

The Optimus G is a phone you'd have to be living under a rock not to have heard about at this point, but pricing and availability information for the US has been surprisingly scant up until now. We knew it was coming to AT&T and Sprint, but in regards to when and how much, "soon" and "some amount of money" were really all we had.

Today, on its official blog, AT&T announced that the Optimus G will be available for pre-order starting October 16 (at this link), and you'll have to cough up $199 and either start a 2-year contract or renew your existing AT&T agreement to get it at that price.

I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? LG? Making an interesting video? Pshaw, I say! Before you dismiss it, though, let me ask you something. Have you ever seen a phone built out of magic and diamonds?! No? Then I've got something new to show you. In this four-minute promo video for the LG Optimus G, we see a man who is, apparently, a sparkle bender, forge a block of pure obsidian, then literally carve the phone out of this block with telekinesis. And that is just the beginning.

The video also demonstrates other key features of the Optimus G.

Earlier this evening, we ran a story containing photos of a purported LG Nexus device obtained (and subsequently photographed) by an XDA user. The photos, along with subtle hints like the presence of a Qualcomm modem and kernel, and the presence of a corroborating FCC filing, had us leaning toward the "legit" side of the rumor spectrum.

Now, it looks like a user of a Belarusian forum called Baraholka (which roughly translates to "flea market") has more photos of the device, posted last week – this time lacking what appeared in previous photos to be a shell or casing that disguised the device's real curves (similar to the case we saw on early Galaxy SIII units).
