Best Of The Worst: The 5 Most Bittersweet Moments For Android In 2011

2011 was a great year for Android - Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was announced. The Galaxy Nexus was released. A whole truckload of Android tablets came out. The first 4G LTE smartphones appeared. But there were some significant speed bumps as well. Here are, in no particular order, the five things in the world of Android in the last year that really got our hopes up, but ended up being a little disappointing.

1. HTC ThunderBolt / All Early Verizon 4G LTE Phones

It's really hard to know where to start with the ThunderBolt. It wasn't actually a terrible phone in terms of usability or performance, but the delayed release, abysmal battery life, overheating, and seemingly endless wait for Android 2.3 drew more angst from owners than probably any other device we've ever seen.

LG Announces Plans To Bring ICS To "High-End' Devices, Evaluates Other Models For Compatibility

Earlier today via its Facebook page, LG announced that it would be bringing ICS to a number of "high-end" devices, including the Optimus 2x, Optimus Black, Optimus 3D, and Optimus LTE. Other LG devices are still on the chopping block, as they are currently being evaluated "to determine whether [ICS] is compatible with the functionality, features, and performance of other LG smartphones."

More details, including an upgrade schedule and specific model information, should be available and posted on the LG Facebook page sometime next month. We'll be sure to keep you posted as more information shows up.

Clove Outs June 6 Release Date for LG Optimus 3D In The UK

Continuing with the trend of high-end Android devices getting speculative release dates, LG's 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D, has been given a release date of June 6 by online UK retailer Clove. They say that the device should be on their shelves by that date, but gives the caveat that this information is "subject to change - but accurate at this time."

With a 1GHz dual core processor, 4.3-inch WVGA display and a 5MP dual-lens camera to capture glasses-free 3D content, this is going to be a worthy opponent to the HTC Sensation, which has been rumored to have a June 8th release date.

The LG Optimus 3D Will Be Known As The LG Thrill 4G - Launching On AT&T "In The Coming Months"

We have known for some time about a high-end 3D smartphone from LG that was among the manufacturer's upcoming high-end releases. Up to this point, the glasses-free phone had been referred to as the LG Optimus 3D and (along with the G2x and the G-Slate on T-Mobile) we knew it would be hitting shelves within the next several months. While the release date is still a mystery, we now know that it will be known as the LG Thrill 4G and will be exclusive (at least at launch) to AT&T in the US.

The 3D phone will sport a 4.3-inch WVGA display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, and a 5MP dual-lens camera for shooting stills and videos in 3D.

Earlier today at MWC, LG officially unveiled its most powerful upcoming smartphone: the Optimus 3D. We've already heard of the Optimus 3D before, and even witnessed both decent and disastrously cheesy ads LG put out ahead of the release, but what we didn't know is that the Optimus 3D would end up being the most powerful smartphone currently on the market.

Not only is the phone powered by a 1GHz TI OMAP4 dual-core processor (which seems to be just as beefy, if not beefier than Tegra 2), but it's also the world's first dual-channel and dual-memory Android smartphone to aid those 2 cores and squeeze every last bit of juice out of them.

The upcoming 3D phone from LG, Optimus 3D, may be cool, with its glasses-free 3D and a dual-core CPU, but it certainly didn't stop the company from producing one of the cheesiest/worst commercials we've ever seen.

The premise is decent - a girl is doing yoga, and her 3D-capable phone provides her with 3D training videos, but the execution... well, you decide, because I'm out of words:

LG Optimus 3D Stars In Leaked Commercial, Shows Off Its Dual Cameras And Three-Dimensional Display

Though I was initially quite skeptical of 3D on phone/tablet-sized devices, it seems that at least one manufacturer has pulled it off - so I'll give LG the benefit of the doubt with their upcoming Optimus 3D. Just as the device's name suggests, it will feature a (glasses-free) three-dimensional display in addition to dual cameras for 3D photography. But we already knew that; what we didn't know - up until now - was how LG planned to market the device.

Looks like "No Longer Just An Idea" will be LG's motto for the Optimus 3D - the same words were displayed at the end of their official teaser from last week.

Update: LG Confirms via Twitter. LG Optimus 3D Picture Leaked Ahead Of MWC Reveal

Update:LG has confirmed via its MWC Twitter account that the Optimus 3D will indeed be shown at the Mobile World Congress. They also confirmed the glasses-free 3D display, 3D video capability, and HDMI.

LG's "Into the New Dimension" event is scheduled for February 14, but Phandroid has gotten a hold of an image that is purported to be the LG Optimus 3D. Although a 3D display can't be confirmed by the picture, we can determine that this device is not the LG Optimus 2X or LG Optimus Black. Considering this phone is set to be revealed in two weeks, this certainly seems like a trustworthy tip, and the specs, while awesome, are still believable:
