Google Now Is Getting Ready To Give You Cards From Third Party Apps

Google, in a post to its Inside Search blog, has just announced that third-party Google Now cards are on the way. Something users (and developers) have been curious about since the predictive assistant's inception is finally getting some exploration, as Google teams up with "30+ developers" to bring users cards covering everything from Pandora suggestions to Lyft ride prices.

Google says the new cards will be rolling out over the next few weeks, and provides a bunch of examples on the Google Now landing page.

Google App Hits Version 4.1 With 'Now Cards' Settings And More [APK Download]

There may be a major trade show happening this week, but it's still Update Wednesday. Google has updated its 'Google' app (formerly known as Search) to version 4.1. We are still digging around for new features, but we've already found a few goodies and put the APK up for your enjoyment.

First up, there's a new space in settings called "Now Cards," which - as the name suggests - gives you control over the cards Google presents to you.

Tip: Google Now Can Give You A Countdown To Some Events Based On Your Reminders

Google Now is never short on surprises. The personal assistant/wizard living in Google's Search app (technically it's Google's "Google" app now) can do some amazing tricks, and no matter how long you've used the app, there are always new features being discovered, added, or improved.

One such feature that's come to our attention is Google's ability to show you a countdown to important events based on your reminders. Basically, if you have a reminder related to an event Google knows about (like Christmas, for instance), Google will pick up on that and - on your reminder card - serve you a countdown.

Google Steps Up Gmail And Calendar Integration In Google Now With Inferred Events

In one of our early Google Now rumors, we described the possibility of "inferred events," or events that Google would grab from your Gmail (or other Google services) and present as a card in Google Now, with the option to add an entry to your calendar.

Today, it looks like the service is being switched on for some users, with Gmail being the first target (as we speculated previously).

Rumor: Google Now May Be On Track To Properly Handle 'Timer' Queries (No More Alarms)

It's hard not to be excited about the future of Google Now. It's already an incredibly powerful tool, on its way to being a do-anything personal assistant, and we've heard tell of even more functionality from bill pay reminders to inferred events entries to contact-based reminders.

Today, though, we've heard about something that many have asked for from Google Now for a long time now - actual timer functionality. Search may not be getting its own built-in timer, but it won't be side-stepping your request to set an alarm, either.

Rumor: Google Now Will Help You Remember, Pay Your Bills [APK Teardown]

Ready for another Google Now rumor? We've already seen evidence of contact-based reminders reliant on your proximity with another person, and "inferred events," whereby Now would pluck mentions of meetings or other appointments from your conversations to automatically create calendar entries. This time, we have something just as useful - a new bill pay card and interface, evidently headed for Google Now.

Disclaimer: No matter the confidence level, there's always a chance product updates, features, and some or all details will be changed or cancelled altogether.

Rumor: 'Remind Me When I'm With This Person' May Be Coming To Google Now

Google Now is a powerful tool. A step toward Google's vision of a Star Trek computer in the palm of your hand, Now is built to serve up information that you need, exactly when you need it, without you asking for it.

To that end, the service has seen many improvements since its debut. It will tell you when your favorite teams are playing, when you need to leave to make it to the airport on time, whether your plane is delayed, and plenty of info about your destination and surrounding attractions, among numerous other things.

Google Search Updated To 2.8.7 With Automatic Language Pack Updates, Wider TV Program Recognition, Tablet UI Tweak [APK Download]

Somewhere amid the rest of Google's app updates today, Google updated its Search app. While the Play Store still shows an old change log, there are at least a couple of notable changes with the new update.

First among them, as part of Google's ongoing quest for better language processing, is the ability to have language packs automatically update themselves. This is something we uncovered in our last APK Teardown, though some of the more exciting features we saw evidence of (custom hotwords) haven't quite hit prime time yet.

[APK Teardown Part 3] Google Search 2.7: Leaving Location Reminders, Hidden UIs Exposed, Fireworks In Japan, And More

The Google Search 2.7 APK teardown is now officially the longest one in the history of Android Police. We find a bunch of interesting things, post about them, continue digging, and what do you know - keep running into new stuff. I'm fairly positive there won't be part 4 this time around, as we've squeezed out every last drop from v2.7, but as they say - never say never.

If you haven't read the first two parts yet, you should do so now to cover the bases.

[APK Teardown Part 2] Google Search 2.7: Say 'Google' To Enable Voice Prompt In Search Results [Video]

Just when you thought we were done with the already rather extensive Google Search teardown, another wild teardown appears. Yup, still the same good old Search 2.7, but this time, we found a hidden feature that you will really want, even more than custom hotwords. At least I think you will.

Turns out, there's a secret flag within Search that lets you use the hotword, set by default to 'Google,' anywhere in search results instead of just the home Activity.
