Google Learns Pursuing Wallet Without Carriers' Blessing Is Suicide, Now Wants To Play Ball

Google Wallet is a great idea - in theory. In practice? The service has been plagued with problems; slow adoption, a lack of NFC devices, the existence of ISIS generally, and a public image crisis after security concerns. The biggest problem, though, has been the decided unwillingness of carriers (except Sprint) to support it.

That's because everyone but Sprint is banking on Isis, which has over $100 million in financial backing from the likes of Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Isis, if you're not familiar with it, is pretty much Google Wallet sans the whole Google part. But unlike Isis, Google Wallet doesn't provide any financial incentive for network operators.

Android 4.0 Update For The Nexus S To Resume 'In The Next Few Weeks'?

I know what all you non-Nexus S owners are thinking: wait, didn't the ICS update roll out to the NS back in December? In fact, it did. But there was some sort of battery drain issue, so Google had to stop the update. And that's the last semi-official thing we heard about it.

Needless to say, Nexus S owners are pissed.

Today, however, Engadget has received "confirmation" from a "trusted source" that the ICS update is set to begin rolling out to the NS (again) and the NS4G "in the next few weeks." While it shouldn't take this long for El Goog to push an update to a Nexus-branded device, it's nice to hear some movement is finally being made on this front.

At the end of January, a leaked Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 build IMM26 for the Sprint Nexus S 4G ended up online, indicating that a possible official release wasn't too far off. We heard this leak caused quite a bit of commotion within the companies involved, which may have had something to do with the XDA post getting wiped clean shortly after (although the poster did state he would only keep it going for a few days).

Two weeks passed without any news, but the situation changed just a few minutes ago when we received a screenshot of one of Sprint's internal systems which clearly shows that this highly desired upgrade should finally be available February 16th.

[Updated] Download & Install: Leaked Official ICS 4.0.4 Build For The Sprint Nexus S 4G

Some unofficial builds have been floating around for a while, but tonight, it looks like Nexus S 4G owners are about to get some allegedly official ICS update action. Over on the XDA forums, user mrxkills has uploaded all the files necessary to get your Sprint Google Experience device updated to 4.0.4.

You read that right: 4.0.4. Compared to 4.0.3, the build we've seen passed around for a while on other devices like the Xoom and the Galaxy Nexus. This is also build number IMM26, compared to IML74K. Unfortunately, we don't know what of all changed yet, outside of the presence of WiMax drivers in this build.

WARNING: This file is only for the Sprint Nexus S 4G. To flash the update, the phone must be stock - that means no custom ROMs. Rooted handsets are OK, though this might reset root permissions (you just need to re-root). We've included a link to a full, flashable ROM which will probably require a wipe, as well.

If you're a Nexus S 4G owner and you're wondering how to get your hands on Google Wallet and be the first nerd on the block to pay for espresso by tapping your phone, we've received a tip that a software update for the Nexus S 4G has begun rolling out (and will continue to do so over a 4 day period).

The update includes not only the official Google Wallet app, but also Google Shopper and various security patches. It looks like Sprint dealers will begin assisting customers with manually updating starting September 20th (tomorrow). If you're a user who hasn't yet received the Google Wallet app, don't worry - the wait is almost over.

It's Official - Google Wallet Is Here, Handy App Can Tell You Where To Use It

True to last night's rumblings, Google and Sprint have announced the launch of Google Wallet, a revolutionary new tap-to-pay service that allows customers to store credit card information and make payments from one app on their Android phone.

For now Google Wallet is only available to those with a Nexus S 4G and a Citi MasterCard. Google plans on adding support for various other card companies, and more Android devices with NFC capabilities are on the horizon.

A critical element to Wallet's success will be the presence of PayPass terminals capable of accepting payments via NFC. The terminals are not particularly widespread in the US at present, but if you're itching to try out Google's awesome new wireless payment system, you can find businesses with PayPass terminals using the Google Wallet webpage or by downloading MasterCard's PayPass Locator app (from the widget below).

Update: It still hasn't been officially announced yet, but the word on the street is that some businesses (such as Peets Coffee & Tea shop in San Francisco) are already displaying the Google Wallet logo near the register. We're definitely getting really close now. [via Phandroid]

For those awaiting the launch of Google Wallet (specifically those with the Sprint Nexus S 4G and a Citibank MasterCard), we've got some good news.

TechCrunch reported today on a document allegedly circulating among Google Wallet partners, indicating that tomorrow, September 19th is the launch date for Google's wallet-consolidating service, which will allow customers to pay at PayPass terminals everywhere with a simple tap of their Android phone.

Latest Version Of Swype Breaks Free Of The Nexus S 4G, Now Available For Rooted Android Devices

Just about a week ago, Sprint let Nexus S 4G owners in on a new version of Swype that improved capitalization of proper nouns, spruced up the UI, and introduced shortcut gestures (see the video below). Unfortunately, users of all non-NS4G Android phones were left out of the fun; therefore, we did not consider the update newsworthy.
