In what seems to be a fairly arbitrary move, Google has trimmed the fat from the Play Store's Nexus 7 cover selection. The lineup, which formerly included pink, light blue, and gray, has been cut down to just the light blue color in the US, with the pink cover variant appearing outside the US. The gray cover has been axed completely.
As an addendum to the announcement of Google completing AOSP rollout for Android 4.2.2, I wanted to highlight a big milestone for the Nexus program - something that has never been the case before today.
After asking JBQ (not to be confused with JDQ39) a follow-up question, I was able to get some clarity on his earlier post and confirm that as of today, with the release of Android 4.2.2 binaries, we have for the first time ever Nexus devices that have 100% of proprietary binaries available.
Machinarium was one of my personal favorite games from 2012, and I've wanted to replay it for months now. Unfortunately, the Nexus 7 is my primary gaming device, and Machinarium hasn't been available for it since its release. Finally, after months of waiting (and numerous attempts to contact Hothead Games), Machinarium is officially available on the Nexus 7 thanks to an update today.
That may not be the only new device added to the fold, though – Hothead didn't update the changelog, so it's hard to say what else the update brings along with it.
If you're in the market for a Nexus 7, don't want to pay full price, and yesterday's 1SaleADay deal left a bad taste in your mouth, eBay might have what you're looking for.
Through eBay's Daily Deals, seller Tiger Direct is offering up refurbished 16GB models for $169.99 shipped. That's about a $30 discount over the Play Store's price (plus shipping).
After months of speculation, pre-orders, and cameo appearances, it's finally here (kind of) – one of the precious few official Nexus accessories users have ever been able to purchase: the Nexus 7 Dock. After snapping one up when they appeared at B&H, I was one of the unlucky handful to receive a "we regret to inform you" email, noting that the dock was not, in fact, available yet.
Stop holding your Nexus 7 in your hands like a chump and check this out. These industrious modders have built and installed complete Nexus 7 mounting systems in a Subaru STi and Toyota Celica. The Toyota owner even created a launcher skin to go with the mod. The skin, of course, is based on Knight Rider (seen below).
Well, it's a start. While the Skype app for Android still has a bizarre and uncomfortable habit of forcing landscape mode, today's update at least allows users to use the portrait orientation if they're making a call. That's nice. Especially since the positioning of front-facing cameras on devices like the Nexus 7 make landscape video chats extremely awkward. Now if only we could get this for the rest of the interface, that would be great.
Have you heard – the U.S. is under attack by the KRA. They're out to destroy free life as we know it, and it's up to you to stop them. I know, that's a lot of work to do just to win a free tablet, but we're running out of requisites.
This contest is now over.
The final results are listed below. If you've won, you will be contacted in the near future.
Update: Well, it looks like the Nexus 7 dock isn't in stock after all. Whether the dock sold out at lightning speed or was never actually available (despite all appearances) is unclear, but B&H appears to have begun sending out a batch of "we regret to inform you" emails regarding the hotly anticipated accessory:
Original Post: Back in December, the official Nexus 7 dock went up for pre-order over at B&H with a tentative availability date of December 30th.
Up until this point, if you wanted to get the 3G version of the Nexus 7 in the US, it appeared that AT&T was the only option. Now, however, Google has provided a T-Mobile version on the Play Store. This model comes pre-loaded with a T-Mo SIM. According to the tech specs, though, they're functionally identical. This will just save you the trouble if you prefer magenta over blue and orange, I suppose.
