Sprint VP David Owens: Sprint Won't Be Releasing Any More WiMax Smartphones, And Don't Expect Any Windows Phones In The Near Future Either

It would appear that Sprint plans on going full speed ahead in focusing on product development for its 4G LTE lineup this year. David Owens, Sprint's VP of Product Development made clear at CES Wednesday that Sprint "won't be introducing any more WiMax smartphones," adding "April, May, June, July, August, those will be very aggressive times for us." This may be a hint that we could begin seeing LTE devices as early as April, which is great news for customers holding out for a new device (like Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, which is poised to be Sprint's first LTE device).

While Sprint doesn't plan on releasing new WiMax smartphones, the carrier evidently plans on selling WiMax hostpots (like the Sierra Wireless hotspot we saw at CES) alongside LTE devices.

If you happen to own an HP TouchPad and have been waiting patiently for a proper Android port, you'll be overjoyed to see a sneak peek of what CM9 brings to the table. If you recall our announcements for the CM7 Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 builds, you probably remember an overwhelming indication that neither build was all too stable, and running them was not for the faint of heart. Alpha 3 is a bit better, but still has a laundry list of issues. A lot of things don't work, or only work intermittently, which makes it very difficult to use for the average consumer.

Google Search For Android Receives Update That Speeds Up Searching And Offers Country-Specific Results

If you haven't notice, the Google Search app for Android received an update a little bit ago. This update is for users running Android 2.2 or 2.3 and brings some UI and performance enhancements. Once updated, this is what you'll see:

  • New color scheme and simplified UI
  • Faster, more responsive searches
  • Enhanced suggestions and query editing
  • Better localized suggestions and search results for more countries
  • Long press to remove history items

You can also tap that little arrow to the right of a search suggestion to add it to your search term before searching, making the whole process a little faster.

[CES 2012] T-Mobile Serves Up A Slew Of Announcements – Introduces Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G, Bobsled Messaging Enhancements, And Expanded 4G Network

At CES today, T-Mobile, in an effort to outline "the company's ongoing efforts to fuel consumer adoption of mobile data," revealed a handful of announcements, ranging from the introduction of a new 4G-capable device, to Bobsled Messaging, to expanded 4G networks.

You may remember that T-Mobile announced updates to its Bobsled Messaging service back in October. Well, T-Mo today announced further enhancements, including free unlimited messaging to Android users worldwide. Bobsled, for those who don't know, is essentially a service which allows users to communicate using mobile devices (through messaging or calling), regardless of platform or network, requiring only an internet or data connection.

Vimeo Releases Android App, Users Complain Of Timestamp Errors

Popular video sharing service Vimeo has finally launched its official Android app today. The new app has included all the important features found in the web version, including the ability to browse, watch, download, and upload videos onto Vimeo.

Upon starting the app, the user is shown a 3x3 grid of options for creating, uploading, watching, and sharing videos. While not a requirement, creating a Vimeo account and logging into the service also allows the user to comment on, "like", and subscribe to videos, as well as save them to the "Watch Later" list.

Some of the other features of the app include:

  • Upload raw footage or previously edited creations in HD or SD
  • Pause/resume uploads and get reminded when a video is paused
  • Replace existing videos
  • Edit titles, descriptions, tags, privacy settings, and credits
  • Share videos via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress, Email, and SMS
  • Watch and manage all Vimeo videos and download them to camera roll
  • Watch videos from your Vimeo Inbox, Watch Later queue, and videos you like"
  • Easily like videos, comment on videos, and add videos to your Watch Later queue
  • Discover new and interesting videos curated by Vimeo Staff
  • Add videos to Groups, Channels, and Albums
  • Access stats on daily plays, likes, and comments

Although the app has received some favourable reviews, the overwhelming majority are 1-star.

[CES 2012] Lenovo's X1 Hybrid Laptop Crams Customized Gingerbread Next To Windows, Calls It "Instant Media Mode"

Lenovo has just unveiled its new X1 Hybrid laptop, which runs Windows with a twist – namely, it can boot into "Instant Media Mode," which allows the laptop to run off of a Snapdragon processor, utilizing custom software based on the Android 2.3 kernel. Ostensibly, this mode is meant for users who want to get through a long flight, or simply zone out with a variety of media, with double the battery life they'd have running Windows.

Interestingly, Lenovo won't explicitly state that the hybrid is running Android, likely because, as Gizmodo astutely points out, it isn't running actual Android.

[CES 2012] Lenovo Unveils Android-Powered IdeaTab S2 10, S2 Smartphone, And "Personal Cloud"

Lenovo, "the world's number two PC company," has just introduced a bevvy of new Android-powered devices, emphasizing their specs and compatibility with Lenovo's "Personal Cloud," which promises to make the company a "personal cloud solution." Liu Jun, Senior VP and President of Lenovo's Mobile Internet and Digital Home business group, explained the significance of the Personal Cloud:

Lenovo is breaking down the barriers of device differentiation and weaving together hardware, software, and cloud services that are connected, experiential, and dynamic. We understand our users need more than just the traditional keyboard and screen for a truly satisfying digital experience. [CES 2012] Samsung Posters Confirm Galaxy Note For AT&T – Logo And Four-Button Controls Included

It has become obvious, thanks to some displays on the CES floor, that the Galaxy Note is indeed headed for AT&T, with a few tweaks. Namely, an AT&T logo prominently emblazoned near the top of the device, and four-button controls replacing the original note's layout. It may be worth noting that these posters (as pointed out by Engadget) appear to feature mock-ups of AT&T's Note variant, as there is no sign of a 4G indicator.

For now, there are absolutely no other details available, but with Samsung's press conference coming up tomorrow, it shouldn't be long before we hear more.

TiVo Releases Hotly Anticipated Android App

Along with a software update to the TiVo Premiere DVR, Margret Schmidt VP of TiVo User Experience tweeted the release of their first Android app:

This comes as great news to TiVo owners as it allows them to control their DVRs from the comfort of their Android 2.1+ phone or 7-inch tablet (the app description makes particular reference to "7-inch tablet").

The app looks to be a great first try with most of the features a TiVo user would want, including:

  • Browse the channel guide and record shows without exiting the currently running programme
  • View shows up to 14 days in advance
  • Schedule and manage TV shows and movie recordings
  • Search for content over your TV, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video & Blockbuster in an integrated view
  • Explore information on the cast and crew of the current show
  • Comment and share information about the show on Facebook and Twitter
  • Use a TiVo remote control replica (but don't worry you won't have to use this interface as you can use the app's gesture based controls)
  • Schedule, search, and browse content when you are away form your device

As expected, the app has garnered plenty of favourable reviews, however its rating is currently at 3.9 owing to a small number of 1 star reviews.
