It has been about a month since we first mentioned that car rental company Zipcar was working on an Android app, and the first beta has now arrived. With this app you'll be able to find and rent a car directly from your Android device, but that's not all - it will also allow you to lock/unlock the doors and honk the horn. That last part may seem like a bit of a novelty, but you have to admit that it's still pretty rad.

Even if you're not a Zipcar member, they encourage you do download the app just to "have some fun." The app is free in the Market, so go ahead and take a peek, see if there are any cars in your area, and learn what Zipcar is all about.

If you were a billion dollar company that had a smartphone design laying around that didn't do so well, what would you do with it? Motorola's going with "rebrand it and release it on a different network" with the "new" XPRT that's set to hit Sprint in June. The global-ready XPRT is basically a rebranded DROID Pro, as it has near identical specs:

motoxprt-lg1

  • 3.1 Inch display
  • 1GHz Processor
  • Global Ready
  • Mobile Hotspot with support for up to 5 devices
  • 5MP Rear Camera
  • Android 2.2 with Motoblur

The XPRT is geared towards business users, and it's the first Android handset on the Now Network to sport enterprise-class security and data encryption.

Welcome to the weekly roundup of the best new Android applications, games, and live wallpapers that went live in the Market or were spotted by us in the previous week or so.

Last week, I went for a nice vacation in the Caribbean and because of that, there was no Best Apps issue at all. Instead, I've rolled 2 weeks' worth of stuff into this week aaaaaaand because it's turned out so long, I am splitting it up into multiple posts (apps are coming soon after this, most likely tomorrow).

Additionally, most people preferred the old roundup format instead of the abridged new one I tried in the last roundup, so I'm bringing it back.

I'm going to be really honest about this one: I had no idea that anyone still uses LiveJournal. Much to my surprise, though, it has been going strong all this time - it's even ranked #71 in the world according to Alexa. After realizing that tidbit of information, it's not surprising at all that there is now an official LiveJournal App for Android.

For a mobile blogging app, I must say that this one seems quite feature rich: you can post new journal entries and photos, create polls, edit entries, create drafts, and manage settings. From just a quick look, I think that this may be the best on-the-go blogging app that I've seen thus far.

Love to shop? Love to shop on the go? Love to shop while shopping? If you answered yes to any of those questions (especially the last one) then you need to grab the new app from online retailer Zappos. It offers all of the Zappos deals that you've grown to love, but it also has the features that you would expect from a good shopping app. Of course you can search and buy, but it also has product reviews, a sharing feature that works over bluetooth, and a wishlist style feature.

If you're not familiar with Zappos - it is an online market that stands above the others by offering things like a full year return policy and free shipping both ways, all the time.

Up until now, if you needed a file manager on your Honeycomb tablet you were stuck using one that was designed for phone versions of Android, which didn't always translate well to the larger screen. Software developers Rhythm Software saw this issue, grabbed it by the horns, and took care of it. The end result? File Manager HD.

File Manager HD is the first file manager specifically designed for Honeycomb tablets (according to the developer). It offers a slew of useful features:

* Based on Android 3.0 new feature and theme
* High definition(1280*800) support
* 3 sets of commercial icons for 60+ different file types, toolbar and menu items
* Cut, copy, paste and cancellable progress dialog
* List and grid view for file browsing
* Compression and decompression support
* Search and share files
* Multiple selection and sorting support
* Thumbnail for photo, pictures and apk files
* Built-in text editor and swf player
* Fully tested on Motorola Xoom

This isn't their first rodeo, either - Rhythm also has a phone version of File Manager, and it's rocking a near-five-star rating.

If you're an HBO subscriber and just can't get enough TV, then I've got good news for you! HBO has just released its official watch-it-on-the-go Android App, HBO GO. Of course, you have to be an HBO customer in order to use this app, but that's the only prerequisite as far as I can tell.

ss-0-320-480-160-0-6a13a793f60f6c7baa0d47c50a9571598274aa47 ss-1-320-480-160-0-be5d1f3f72411a0beec59ff4a2a5f7dbb7d6c261 ss-2-320-480-160-0-c6cea9ea866ad780f1f62ee1ff2b1a2e170e0ccc

The app allows you to watch all of your favorite HBO content directly on your mobile device, including movies and HBO original content. It should work on 3G, 4G, and WiFi, but unfortunately it is limited to US customers at this time.

That's not the only downside, either.

While browsing the XOOM xda forum today, I saw this announcement of HoneyReader, a new application built specifically with Honeycomb tablets in mind. Because it doesn't have to support pre-Honeycomb versions of the OS or small-sized phone screens altogether, the authors concentrated on making it a great tablet experience, and I must say, their first take is pretty good.

HoneyReader uses the native to Honeycomb Fragments API that on the surface translates to fluid and flexible UI elements that can divide the screen into separately scrollable independent areas with their own lifecycles. If you're familiar with the CNN app, for example, you know what I'm talking about (I personally think the Fragments API is the greatest thing in Android since...

Welcome to the weekly roundup of the best new Android applications, games, and live wallpapers that went live in the Market or were spotted by us in the previous week or so.

This week, I am trying something a little different due to complaints about the heavy weight of these roundups. There are now no usual app widgets, Appbrain widgets, barcodes, or embedded videos. There are also fewer screenshots - instead, I'm picking out only the most interesting ones.

Because there are no Appbrain widgets, I decided to include the current price for paid apps next to the Market link. Video links, when available, go to the same area.

Update: It looks like the homescreen is just a generic placeholder, because it's the same one used here for the Optimus V at Best Buy. Thanks Nate!

This may not be of interest to the 7 people out there that actually like Motorola's Blur interface, but for the rest of us this is pretty good news. It looks like Motorola is prepping a new DROID-esque Android 2.2 device for Virgin Mobile USA, and it appears to be sans-Blur in the one leaked picture that Pocketnow has obtained.

With that said, it looks like the device may still be running some sort of a custom interface, judging by the three-column homescreen grid, which is not currently possible with stock Froyo's four-column launcher.
