The Anomaly games gained attention not only because they are staggeringly gorgeous, but because the gameplay was a clever twist on the age-old tower defense genre. Past games had you playing as the creeps fighting through the towers, but Anomaly Defenders is more traditional—you're in control of the towers, but it's the humans you're fighting, not aliens.

Running, jumping, shooting—these are the sorts of things you'd expect in a mobile game. Coding? Eh, less so. That's what makes Hacked so interesting. This game, created by Joaquim Verges (Falcon Pro dev) and Fabien Devos, is built around a programming language (H) and a mobile friendly code editor (the Hackpad). You play the game by creating and running simple programs, so a little coding experience is needed to get the most out of it.

Do you want to become part of an unstoppable military machine with giant lasers and shiny white armor? Or are justice and freedom worth fighting for until the bitter end? You get to choose in Star Wars: Commander for Android. Joining the Empire grants access to powerful weapons, but the Rebel Alliance has clever tactics on its side. Whatever you end up doing, this game will still Force-choke your wallet.

At first glance, Boogey Boy seems to be another endless runner, probably overflowing with in-app purchases. While it kind of plays like an endless runner, there are levels, and you won't find a single IAP anywhere. Now if only you could outrun that boogey man chasing you.

So what's going on in Light in the Darkness? The Totems are (apparently) a race of little gumdrop-shaped creatures that emit light. No need to judge, though. Their offspring have gone missing, and you have to use their luminous powers to spot the youngsters.

Cisco is one of the premiere makers of networking systems in the world, but the company's newest offering in the Play Store has nothing to do with that. Well, it has very little to do with that. It's a tower defense game called Net Invaders. See, there are nasty viruses, trojans, and worms attacking your systems, and only Cisco security technology can stop them. Yes, this is really happening.

The American football season is just getting underway, and that means it's time for game tie-ins. Full Fat has long made games based on the flick-kick model, and now you can complete passes and score field goals with NFL Kicker and NFL Quarterback 2015.

In NFL Kicker, you have to complete field goals from different places on the field with varying wind. You've probably seen this gameplay skinned several different ways.

Not every Kickstarter campaign is doomed to failure—occasionally you get something like Back to Bed, a new puzzle game that was Kickstarted back in spring 2013. It has just arrived on Android with a really cool visual style and interesting narcolepsy-based gameplay.

All it takes is a single button and some concentration to help a bizarre type of jellyfish perpetuate its species in Deep Under the Sky. In return, you get to explore an amazing technicolor world on the dark side of Venus. This is the newest game from the developer of the similarly trippy Incredipede, but it's a much more zen experience.

You have an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of the latest gaming craze to sweep the nation—Swing Copters. It's like Flappy Bird, but vertical. Yeah, it goes up instead of to the right. Revolutionary. This is the second game from Dong Nguyen of .GEARS Studios, and will presumably be the first one he doesn't unpublish for mysterious reasons in a few months. It's free with ads, but the supposed in-app purchase to remove them doesn't seem to be present in the Android version.
