T-Mobile And HTC Haven't Forgotten myTouch 3G Slide And G2, Minor Updates Available For Both

These updates might not amount to much, but it's always nice to see official updates to older devices. I'm talking really old, like the myTouch 3G Slide and the G2, both released all the way back in 2010. If you're in possession of said devices and are not yet running a custom ROM with something more fresh than Android 2.2 and 2.3.4 respectively (why not?), here's what's coming:

  • Security patch
  • Improved software stability

Descriptive, isn't it? Here are the details of each update:

T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide Finally Sees The Froyo (Android 2.2.1) Update, Sets HTC's Servers On Fire

MT3G Slide owners, you won't believe your eyes today. April Fool's has passed, and T-Mobile is not trolling you - the Froyo update is indeed available for the poor younger brother of the original myTouch 3G which already received Froyo almost 6 months ago. Don't let the name fool you, as there are, apparently, quite a few differences between the 2 devices - enough to tie up the release for such a long time.

The update is not over-the-air (OTA) - you will have to download it from HTC's servers, which are coincidentally on fire right now, barely pushing out the file at 6-7 KB/s.

  • Motorola Droid - Affordable doesn’t necessarily have to mean cheap, and such is the case with the original Motorola Droid. While Verizon itself no longer carries the original, (it’s been dropped in favor of the Droid 2) it can be had for the price of $0.00 (or, at most, $0.01) at third-party retailers like WireFly, Amazon, and LetsTalk.com.

Get ready for another scoop of blue Froyo: CyanogenMod 6 has just been updated to RC3 for the Nexus One, Droid, Droid Incredible, Dream (G1) and Sapphire (myTouch 3G), RC2 for the EVO, and was just released as RC1 for the myTouch 3G Slide and Hero CDMA.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide Gets Rooted

myTouch 3G Slide owners, we have some good news for you! If you've been itching to root your devices, now you can, thanks to Android hacker eugene373, who released his root instructions today.

The process involves booting into recovery mode, pushing the “update” to the phone manually, and installing the root. Users of the HTC Droid Incredible may recognize that “… it's the same root method as the HTC Incredible... I just added SU & fixed the script, plus figured out how to get it to write to system…”

Android hackers initially expected to have a root out for the phone’s June 3rd release, but it proved more difficult than they had anticipated to provide a bug-free solution.
