MX Player Updated To v1.7, Brings Background Playback, Improved Software Decoding On Tegra 3 Devices, And More

MX has always been a pretty impressive video player - it's chocked full of useful features and offers nearly every codec imaginable. Today, it received an update to v1.7 that brings a fair amount of performance improvements for various devices, as well as one really neat key feature: background playback.

Changelog:

  • Stabilized S/W decoder on Tegra 3 devices such as ASUS Transformer Prime, HTC One X, Nexus 7.
  • Added new hardware decoder named H/W+. (However, H/W+ decoder is available only on limited devices)
  • Added support for x86 CPU.
  • Added background play. (long presss play button)
  • Added supprot for custom FFmpeg build.

    [Update: Available June 30] MEIZU MX Quad-Core Release Date And Price Officially Announced: Landing in China And Hong Kong In June From $475

    Update: Looks like it's going to be available beginning June 30th, though MEIZU is still working out finalized pricing details.

    Chinese phone manufacturer MEIZU revealed the first MX way back in September, noting that both a dual-core and quad-core version of the phone would be coming. The dual-core model came first, and was released on October 1. Today, they've officially announced that the quad-core model will hit stores in China and Hong Kong sometime in June.

    While the phone looks virtually identical on the outside, it's (obviously) powered by twice the cores. While it's not the first quad-core phone we've seen, it is the first to be powered by something other than a Tegra 3 CPU.

    MEIZU Releases Public Android 4.0.3 Beta ROMs For MX/M9

    MEIZU may have gotten its start as a maker of crappy knock-off electronics, but lately, the company has been making an impressive push into the mainstream. Take a look at the specs of the flagship MEIZU MX and you can see what I mean: 4" qHD screen, 8MP rear shooter, 1.4GHz dual-core CPU, and all the other usual goodies.  The smaller (and 15 month old) M9 packs a punch too, with a 3.5" qHD screen, and 1GHZ CPU - also damn respectable for its time.

    Luckily for owners of both devices, the company has released a public Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) ROM that's available for download - something many who own phones from larger, more established companies can't say.

    Pricing And Specs Revealed For Meizu MX: First Quad-Core Android Phone

    That glut of quad-core awesomeness that Nvidia claimed was to begin this August didn't exactly happen. While this is a disappointment, it is clear that the second doubling of cores is on the not-so-distant horizon.

    Today, Chinese manufacturer Meizu announced the pricing and specs of its newest handset: the MX. The Meizu MX comes in two flavors, the 16GB dual-core variety and the 32GB model with a quad-core processor. Both devices sport 4.3" qHD displays and A9 CPUs, but they do vary in price. The 16GB model will cost around $470 USD while the big-daddy 32GB version will run you $625 USD.
