Since the invention of the smartphone, the number one concern on everyone's mind is "How can I use this to help prepare for the zombie apocalypse?" And if that's not your number one concern, it should be. Zombies, Run! is a game designed to augment your current running routine with a story and extra, *ahem*, motivation. Of the keeping-your-brains variety.

The game actually started as a Kickstarter project (but what doesn't these days?) and was released on iOS a few months ago. The game is fairly straightforward. Plug in your headphones before you go running, and hit play. The audio creates an environment and a narrative that engulfs you in a post-apocalyptic world.

Songkick is a fantastic service that helps avid concert fans track bands and concerts in their local area based on their music tastes. Well, now, the service is coming to Android with its shiny new app. Songkick can scan your music library, Google Music account, and Last.fm artist to create a custom calendar of all the shows in your area you might like. Smart!

The app is extremely slick and appears designed with ICS in mind, which certain older apps have only just started to get on board with. So, it's nice to see this one start with the new UI out of the gate.

Spotify's New ICS App Now Out Of Beta And Available In The Play Store

The "freemium" music streaming service Spotify has had great success on the desktop and on iOS, but its Android offering has always been rather lacking, with an extremely dated-looking application that did no justice to the greatness of the service itself. Back in April, Spotify made its first motions towards bringing the app up to speed with a public beta of a rather pretty Holo-themed application for Android 4.0, and now that beta has borne fruit.

In a blog post today, Spotify announced the immediate release of the finished version of this Android 4.0 client to the Google Play Store.

AudioAddict Releases Rock Radio To The Play Store, Crams All The Metal You Can Eat Directly Into Your Ear Canal

Anyone who knows me (or has read any article where I mention music) is probably aware of my music preference: I'm all about rock and metal. Thus, when Rock Radio from AudioAddict hit the Play Store, I knew I had to check it out. And I wasn't disappointed.

SoundHound Version 5.0 Hits The Play Store, Brings All New Interface, Quicker Music Recognition, And "Song Stream"

Version 5 of the popular music-identifying app SoundHound just hit the Play Store, bringing a handful of enhancements and improvements to the app.

The first thing you'll notice is the new interface, which features a new homescreen with a "carousel of content" where you'll find top songs, most shared songs, and most tweeted songs. Also in the carousel is a new "song stream" feature where you can hear new singles from various artists directly within the SoundHound App.

One of my favorite things about the update is that it brings Spotify integration. Once you've searched a song, there's a new option to "Play Now in Spotify," which is absolutely fantastic.

JetAudio Comes To Android, Bringing Sophisticated Audio Enhancement And Playback Control To Your Mobile Device

JetAudio, an audio solution that's achieved the title of CNET's most-downloaded and highest-rated media player, seems to have found its way to Android, recently becoming available in Google's Play Store.

For those not familiar, JetAudio allows users to play just about any type of audio file, from .wav to .mpc, .spx, .wv, .ape, and a ton more. The app also offers BBE, BBE ViVA, Wide, Reverb, and X-Bass audio enhancement options, and a versatile 10-band equalizer (which has 32 handy presets).

If JetAudio doesn't sound versatile enough already, the app also offers various advanced playback options from speed control to crossfading, AGC, and "much more." On top of all that, the app has a slick, easy-to-grasp interface that delivers a ton of functionality while successfully avoiding clutter.

Google Play Store Expands Carrier Billing Options To Include Books, Movies, And Music On Sprint

Two weeks ago, Google announced a series of expansions to carrier billing options for Play Store Apps, Movies, Books, and Music on various carriers. While some changes went into effect immediately, Sprint, which already allowed direct billing for apps, was one carrier that was listed as "coming soon."

As of today, all three additional options are available to Sprint customers: books, music, and movies. Not surprisingly, carrier billing is the default option since it's by far the cheapest to carriers and Google as they get to bypass credit card fees. While this addition doesn't benefit everyone, I can see a few handy uses for carrier billing:

  • you don't own a credit card at all
  • you don't want to add a credit card to your Wallet account for some reason, be it security, paranoia, or a medical condition that prevents you from typing 16 digits in a row (also known as laziness)
  • you don't want to pollute your credit card statement with multiple charges
  • you don't want your significant others with access to your credit card statement to see what you're doing

It's here! It's here! It's here! Ok. Calm down. Woo. For those of you who have been living under a digital rock for the last year, turntable.fm is a music sharing service. You and four of your best buddies log in to a virtual dance floor, create playlists, and take turns playing songs for a room full of listeners who can then vote your songs up or down. DJs can accrue points, get swag, and become virtual DJ legends. Or, if you prefer, just sit back and enjoy rooms full of hand-selected music. Take that, Pandora!

Turntable.fm has been available for a little over a year online, and the company has also created an iOS app.

Google Announces Carrier Billing For Movies, Music, Books, And Apps From The Play Store On Some Carriers

If you prefer not to give Google your credit card info, and would rather consolidate all your Play Store payments into one big carrier bill, then we've got some good news for you. Google just announced an expansion to the carrier billing system that now includes the ability to charge books, movies, and music to your carrier bill, in addition to apps.

The full list of carriers that support the new billing is above. Sorry Verizon users, you're still not on the list. The other three major US carriers, as well as a host of international carriers, support the new payment system, though.

[New App] Music Is Math Now: SnapNPlay Lets You Play Back Sheet Music By Taking A Picture Of The Notes

How's this for amazing? You see a piece of sheet music, but you can't read it because you're a plebian, or perhaps you can read it but you want to hear it. SnapNPlay is an app that lets you take a picture of a line of sheet music and then plays back the notes on the page. This is amazing.

The app itself looks a little rough around the edges right now, but the concept is wonderful. The world of the future has already brought us some amazing things, but this app helps highlight something romantic about the nature of creative thought.
