Punit Soni, Motorola Mobility's VP Of Product, Promises To Deliver On Every Promise Moto Makes Moving Forward

It's no secret Motorola has left a bad taste in customers' mouths over the last couple of years. Cancelled OS updates and broken promises have understandably left many owners vowing never to buy a Moto product again. Who can blame them, really – when purchasing a device, it's not unreasonable to expect good support moving forward. Unfortunately, that's just not something Motorola has been able to deliver on in the past.

Motorola Atrix 4G Gets The Soak Test Treatment, ICS May Be Coming Soon

If you're an Atrix 4G owner, I've got a case of the feels for you. When the handset came out, it was one of the first pieces of hardware with a dual-core processor and it seemed like it would last forever. So far, though, it hasn't managed to get ICS. We all get burned by manufacturer updates but this one seems particularly harsh. Which is why I'm glad to bring a bit of good news: Motorola appears to be beginning its soak test program for the handset.

Dan Rosenberg Blesses Droid RAZR/MAXX Users With Root For The 'Unrootable' Jelly Bean 4.1 OTA

Winning a $450 bounty and the hearts of Droid RAZR/MAXX users, Dan Rosenberg has found a successful root method for the phone's 4.1 JellyBean OTA, which began rolling out last Christmas Eve.

Some readers are likely familiar with Mr. Rosenberg's work, as he's rooted everything in sight from the Droid RAZR/MAXX HD to the RAZR M, all the way back to the LG Spectrum. As a security researcher, he's even given (and published) a helpful presentation on rooting and modding for the security conscious.

Verizon Motorola XOOM And HTC One XL Get CyanogenMod 10.1 Support

Of all the Android ROMs out there, few receive even a fraction of the love that CyanogenMod does. For users that like to flash ROMs and experiment with all Android has to offer, getting official Cyanogen support can be like Christmas morning. Today users of the HTC One XL and the old Verizon Motorola XOOM get to do a little happy dance as CyanogenMod 10.1 nightlies have become available for the XOOM, while an experimental build is up for the One XL.

Android: A Look Back To 2012, And A Look Forward To 2013

Happy New Year! It's that time again; with the new year comes our new annual prediction post. I tackled this last year, and rather than do a bunch of crazy, pulled-from-thin-air predictions, I ended up with a link-filled research-fest for the year. It worked out pretty well, so that's what's on the docket for today. First though, I'll take a look and see just how many of last year's predictions and rumors came true, and provide some updates for the more important topics.

Millenial Media: Samsung Ad Impressions Market Share Doubled In Last Year While HTC And Motorola Halved

If you needed any clearer indication that Samsung basically owns the Android world while HTC and Motorola are in trouble, maybe this will help. According to Millenial Media, a mobile advertising firm, ad impressions on its platform from Samsung handsets shot up from 23% to 46% in the last year. Meanwhile, HTC plummeted from 32% to 16%, while Moto dropped from 22% to 11%. This is a massive change.

Now, before we go getting bent out of shape over this, let's clarify a couple things.

Republic Wireless Open For All: Preorders For The $259 Motorola DEFY XT Available Now

There are a lot of reasons to like Republic Wireless, the forward-looking unlimited hybrid 3G/WiFi mobile virtual network operator that started an invite-only beta earlier this year. The invite-only part is not one of them. If you've been waiting for your chance to try out Republic's super-cheap plans, then you won't have to wait much longer: the company announced on its blog that it will soon be open to all applicants.

Motorola Finalizes $100 Trade-Up Program For Old Devices – Basically A Rebate Deal

When Motorola announced a few months back that it was not going to update most of its 2011 Android devices to Jelly Bean, owners were understandably upset. Moto attempted to calm the masses by offering a $100 trade-in credit. Now the details have been finalized and the program is looking much less appealing than everyone had hoped.

tradeup

Eligible devices are the Droid 3, Droid X2, Admiral, Atrix 2, Atrix 4G, Cliq2, Electrify, Photon 4G, XPRT, Titanium, and Triumph.

Android 4.1 For The Motorola Razr M Rolling Out Now

Motorola promised that the Razr M would get its taste of Jelly Bean before year's end. Of course, when we hear "before year's end," it's just assumed that means December 29th or 30th. In this case, we have been pleasantly surprised, as the M's JB update is on its way out now.

Announced just moments ago by Verizon Wireless, the OTA brings all sorts of goodies to the smallest of the RAZR family, including Google Now, Project Butter (for smoothness), better voice recognition, enhanced notifications, a better keyboard, and more.

Motorola Adds Electrify M To Bootloader Unlock Program - No Developer Edition Required

Following the ATRIX HD, the recently announced Electrify M destined for U.S. Cellular is Motorola's newest member of the bootloader unlock program. The Electrify M is basically the RAZR M with minor visual tweaks but, unlike its Verizon sibling, won't come in a separate, more expensive developer-friendly flavor. Instead, like the Photon Q on Sprint and the RAZR i/HD outside of U.S., it's unlockable out of the box.

An unlocked bootloader means Electrify M owners will have full blessing of US Cellular and Motorola to customize software on their devices and flash custom ROMs, in exchange for losing the warranty, of course (in case there is any confusion, Motorola specifies: "Once you get the unlock code, your device is no longer covered by the Motorola warranty; in other words, please don't blame us if things go wrong, even if they appear unrelated to unlocking the bootloader.").
