Motorola Re-Enters The Chinese Market With The Moto X 2014, Moto X Pro, And Moto G 2014

When Lenovo announced its intention to buy Motorola off of former owner Google, it was assumed that the Chinese manufacturer wanted an easy foothold into potentially lucrative Western markets. But apparently Lenovo is just as interested in getting Motorola's well-received hardware into the largest mobile market on the planet. Today Motorola announced in a keynote that it would begin taking pre-orders for the second-gen Moto G and the 2014 flagship Moto X in China, and showed off the Moto X Pro (basically a de-branded Nexus 6).

All three models are mostly unchanged from their counterparts sold elsewhere, though they'll go without Google services and access to the Play Store, since the company doesn't formally operate in China.

Former Moto CEO Says The Nexus 6 Was Supposed To Have A Fingerprint Scanner On The Back

I love the "Moto dimple" on the back of the Nexus 6. It makes the enormous phone just a little bit easier to grip (especially if you have a case with an iPhone-style logo cutout, like this one). But apparently the original purpose of the circular depression wasn't ergonomics, or even to match the branding on other Motorola devices like the Moto X. According to Dennis Woodside, former CEO of Motorola and currently the COO at Dropbox, the dimple was intended to be a fingerprint scanner.

Republic Wireless' hybrid WiFi-cellular calling system requires a number of changes to the firmware of phones, so updates tend to take a little longer. Case in point, The Moto G and Moto E are about to get Android 4.4.4 on Republic, but the Moto X is delayed a bit longer.

[Updated] PSA: If Your Nexus 6 Has An AT&T SIM Card, Your Android Updates Are Being Withheld, But It Doesn't Actually Matter

Update: Plenty of readers are saying that they've received 5.0.1 with AT&T SIM cards. The decision to publish this post was made after my testing and another AP team member saying that he had yet to receive 5.0.1 on his device as well. It's possible that the rollout to devices with AT&T SIMs is just moving at a much slower pace than for ones with other SIMs, but regardless, there is still something unique going on with AT&T.

Time flies in the tech world. The Moto 360 isn't the latest hotness anymore, but I still love the one strapped to my wrist. In my mind, it remains the most visually stunning smartwatch you can buy. And when I say you, I'm referring to folks in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom—all places where the watch is now listed as available from the Play Store.

Motorola Turbo Charger Appears On Google Play, Listed As Coming Soon

You can buy the Turbo Charger from Motorola's website for $34.99. But just like with brick and mortar stores, it's nice to have options. So if I may have everyone's attention, please direct your attention to the Play Store, where the charger is now listed as coming soon.

The Motorola Turbo Charger can plug into any device that draws its juice from a USB port, but if you pair it with something like the Nexus 6, it will recharge the thing in a fraction of the time a weaker adapter would take.

Motorola Uploads Bland-Looking Visual Voice Mail App To Google Play

Accessing voice mail has traditionally been a pain, and while visual voice mail takes much of the aggravation away, it seems many of the supplied apps are designed to capture the essence of the mundane experience and inject it directly into our eyes. To continue the trend, Motorola has added a Visual Voice Mail app to the Play Store that looks about as exciting as a confirmation dialogue.

The app adheres to material design enough not to make a device running stock Lollipop wince, but with awkward spacing and little in the way of color, it could be better.
