Don't expect new Android Wear smartwatches this year from Huawei, Motorola, or LG

In recent years, a raft of new smartwatches would launch each fall in time for holiday shopping, but not this time. There were a few fitness-oriented watches released earlier this summer, and some new Fossil watches have started popping up at retail. But where are the big names like Motorola, LG, and Huawei? Cnet has gotten confirmation from all three companies that they won't be releasing any more watches this year.

[Update: More devices] Motorola posts factory image for Moto G4, removes all the other ones

If you need a factory image for Motorola's new Moto G4 (XT1624), there's good news. It's now available. If, however, you need a factory image for an older Motorola phone, you're out of luck. The Moto G4 is currently the only device with an official factory image available for download. The Moto G4 Plus is also not listed right now.

Moto Z Play review: The best 'modular' phone you can get, for whatever that's worth

Motorola is going all-in on modular accessories this year, and Verizon is right there with it. The Moto Z Play was announced recently, and it's a Verizon exclusive for a few weeks before it ships unlocked in October. This device works with all the same Moto Mods as the other Moto Z variants, but it's much less spendy at around $400 on Verizon. That's a big advantage when you're pushing Mods that cost as much as $300. Are the trade-offs worth it? Is this finally the phone that makes modular smartphones viable? Let's find out.

Moto adds its file manager app to the Play Store for easy updates

Motorola was the first major smartphone maker to start putting its stock apps in the Play Store. Before that, OEMs would only update those apps as part of an OTA update. It sounds positively barbaric by today's standards. Motorola isn't done yet, though. Just today it added its stock file manager to the Play Store. You won't see much in the way of improvements this time, but who knows what the future could bring?

Quick review: Motorola's Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod camera

Motorola launched the Moto Z on Verizon a few weeks back with three optional Mods—a battery, speaker, and pico-projector. Before that was all announced, there were rumors of a camera Mod with optical zoom. It wasn't available at launch, but now the Hasselblad True Zoom Mod is official, and it costs $300. I've been snapping photos with the Hasselblad Mod for a few days, and here are a whole bunch of them. Spoiler: they're kind of disappointing.

Verizon has had the exclusive on the Moto Z line for the last few months, but that's almost over. Pre-orders for the unlocked Moto Z start on September 15th, but the pricing is even higher than it is on Verizon—$699.99. The device won't actually ship until sometime in October.

Motorola announces the Moto Z Play and True Zoom Moto Mod camera

Motorola's new Moto Z family is still only on Verizon, but unlocked phones are coming soon. In the meantime, Verizon is getting it's third Moto Z variant, the new Moto Z Play Droid. It launches first on Verizon, but an unlocked version will come out in October (pre-orders on September 15th). It's a less expensive device that works with the same Moto Mods as the more spendy versions—including the new True Zoom camera Mod. The specs are a step down, but you get all the same software features.

Motorola releases Mods Manager and projector Mod app in the Play Store

The Moto Z and Moto Z Force have launched today as Verizon-exclusive devices. The Moto Z will come out as an unlocked device in the not too distant future, but the Droid phones are the only game in town when it comes to Moto Mods. And there are settings apps for the Mods in the Play Store—two of them, in fact. I guess that's cool.

Moto Z and Moto Z Force review: A modular miss

Motorola is trying something new—it's like a whole new company with new owners, new phones, and a new approach to making money on said phones. The Moto Z and Z Force (currently only available as Verizon exclusives) are "modular" phones with a series of snap-on rear panel accessories. They're also very thin and lacking a headphone jack. There are certainly reasons to be skeptical of these devices, but they're also very interesting in an industry that has had trouble innovating beyond the standard black slab.
