The time has come for America's most patriotic phone to remove its ten-gallon hat and hop down from its saddle, because Motorola Mobility has announced that it's closing down the high-end phone's assembly plant in Fort Worth, TX. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the facility will close its doors before the end of the year.

"What we found was that the North American market was exceptionally tough,"

- Motorola President Rick Osterloh

The reason is simple, the Moto X simply did not sell enough units for Motorola to achieve economies of scale.

The 64GB Moto X is fast becoming the latest unicorn of the Android landscape. After the graphics and code for a 64GB option were uncovered on the Moto Maker website, some leaked Sprint docs have shown up that offer more confirmation this device is going to be a thing. It's not a done deal, though.

Since the launch of the Moto X, there have been two available storage options: 16GB and 32GB. For some users, 32GB just isn't enough without an SD card slot (seriously though, what are you guys doing with your phones?). Fortunately, it looks like Moto may be gearing up to launch a 64GB variant of the X, which looks to be available with a $100 price bump over the 16GB version.

In what is Motorola's dullest release since Contextual Services hit the Play Store, Moto has opened up Modality Services to receive future updates via Google Play as well. This software helps a phone respond appropriately to motion and position, enabling it to know when it's coming out of a pocket or whether it's sitting face down on a desk. You know, the good stuff that made the Moto X so interesting in the first place.

The Moto 360 is shaping up to be a really cool Android Wear device with its round display and premium look. The outside is only part of the equation, though. Motorola is still looking for some design inspiration to make the Moto 360 all it can be. So it's having a little contest. Designers are invited to create watch faces in the Moto 360 Design Face-Off. The winner gets a Moto 360 valued at $249.

Apple and Google have been fighting it out over patents ever since Android devices went on sale. Until today, that involved more than 20 ongoing lawsuits (in the US and Germany) between the two technology behemoths. In a joint statement earlier today, Apple and Google have announced all that is over. They will be ending the patent cases and will instead work to reform patent law.

This certainly sounds great, but it's probably not as significant as you're imagining.

Update: according to this post by Punit Soni, the app is indeed exclusive to the Moto E for the time being. Other Motorola phones (Moto G, Moto X, and the Droids) will get access to Alert at some point.

My grandmother is 76 years old, and I've finally convinced her that taking her ancient RAZR V3 cell phone on the tractor when she mows the pasture is a good idea.

If you happen to own an Atrix HD from AT&T, get ready for something you haven't seen in a very long time: a firmware update. Unfortunately, this is only a "security enhancement" and not an upgrade to the Android operating system. Motorola hasn't specified exactly what this update is supposed to fix, but it's almost certainly a patch for the Heartbleed bug that was widely reported last month.

The last update to the Atrix HD shipped out at the end of 2012, which brought it from 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean).

There it is folks, the Moto E has been announced. We've known about it for a little while thanks to a couple of leaks, one of which even included specs. Today, Motorola held an event in India to officially launch the budget handset, starting it at just 6999 Rupees (about $117 USD). Shortly after the show was over, US pre-orders also went live with a starting price of $129 without contract.

If you've bought a DROID phone from Verizon and Motorola at some point in the last two generations, you've got an update coming soon. The carrier posted update materials for all 2012 and 2013 Motorola DROIDs: RAZR M, RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD, Mini, Ultra, and Maxx. The older phones are getting upgraded to Android 4.4.2, while the newer DROIDs just get a stability update.
