Motorola Photon GHLks

It's been close to a year since Sprint last showed the Motorola Photon 4G some update love, but after seemingly forgetting about this once flagship device, The Now Network is now pushing an OTA update to the device that brings a handful of useful updates and features to the device:

  • More easily import contacts from SD card.
  • Improved music playback, both streaming from Amazon Cloud or Internet Radio services and music saved to the phone - minimizes occasional skips or -repeats
  • Enhancements for WiFi hotspot in GSM/UMTS mode and adding new WiFi connections.

Yesterday, we took a look at Riptide GP for Tegra devices with the addition of controller support. To celebrate the update and all the fun that adding a controller to your Tegra tablet can bring, we've once again teamed up with NVIDIA to bring our most massive giveaway yet: The Riptide Gaming Power Pack.

Just take a look of all that is in store for the winner:

  • ASUS Eee Pad Transformer 32GB with keyboard dock.

A minor OTA update is currently rolling out to the Motorola Photon 4G that brings a few bug fixes and one notable feature: Google Talk with Video support. Other than that, it's a pretty bland update:

  • Lapdock support
  • Enhancements to image appearance when pictures are taken in panorama mode
  • Forwarded messages are properly identified as being forwarded
  • Improved audio quality with car speakers when connected to a car charger and audio
  • Introduction of international roaming 3G UMTS hotspot functionality for a single Wi-Fi enabled

While this update doesn't bring a whole slew of game-changing features, I'm sure it's still a welcome one for Photon owners.

US Cellular just sent out a presser for the upcoming Motorola Electrify, which is basically a rebranded Photon 4G minus WiMax. There's little doubt that this will be US Cellular's flagship device, as it's far-and-above their current highest-spec'd device:

  • 4.3-inch qHD display
  • 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage
  • 8MP rear camera, VGA front camera
  • Webtop capable
  • Kickstand
  • Android 2.3

The Electrify will be available sometime later this month for $199 with a two-year agreement.

As Sprint's newest dual-core WiMax device, there was the little doubt that Motorola Photon 4G would inevitably be compared to the HTC EVO 3D. The battle nearly started itself in the comments yesterday once our Photon 4G Review Roundup went live, as the EVO 3D loyalists came running to defend their beloved device. Fortunately, Bob Kovacs of Wirefly took it upon himself to find out which device is better by throwing them both in the ring together to face off in the Schmackdown.

So here we are, two days after the release of Sprint's newest dual-core WiMax device, the Motorola Photon 4G, and a clever dev by the name of edgan over at the XDA forums has already found a way to gain root access to the device. I must warn you, however, the process doesn't appear to be the easiest thing I've ever seen.

Before we get started with the full instructions, there is a list of must-have items in order to make this work:

  • HD Docking Station
  • USB Mouse
  • USB Keyboard
  • HDMI Cable (for HD docking station)
  • WiFi

Got it?

The Motorola Photon 4G has been anticipated for a few months now, as it's Motorola's first 4G smartphone to hit Sprint's WiMax network. Moreover, it's sleek, stylish, fast, and an all-around good device, according to the first round of reviews that we've seen. Below is a summary of those reviews, but first, a quick look over the specs:

  • 4.3 Inch qHD PenTile display
  • 1Ghz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB on-board storage
  • 8MP rear camera, VGA front cam
  • Webtop-enabled
  • WiMax
  • Android 2.3.4

Without further ado, here are the reviews.

Update 2: Apparently, there were Moto reps spewing false information at the Sprint event today, because both Android Central and Droid-Life have received word that the Photon 4G will not ship with an unlocked bootloader. The statement that Motorola released was still rather cryptic, however:

Motorola has recognized the passion around this topic in our communities.  As we’ve previously communicated, it is our intention to include the unlockable/relockable bootloader in software releases starting in late 2011, where operator and channel partners will allow it.  However, this feature is not included in the software found on PHOTON 4G.
