It's been close to a year since Sprint last showed the Motorola Photon 4G some update love, but after seemingly forgetting about this once flagship device, The Now Network is now pushing an OTA update to the device that brings a handful of useful updates and features to the device:

  • More easily import contacts from SD card.
  • Improved music playback, both streaming from Amazon Cloud or Internet Radio services and music saved to the phone - minimizes occasional skips or -repeats
  • Enhancements for WiFi hotspot in GSM/UMTS mode and adding new WiFi connections.

Motorola Photon 4G OTA Update Rolling Out Now, Brings Google Talk With Video Support, Bug Fixes

A minor OTA update is currently rolling out to the Motorola Photon 4G that brings a few bug fixes and one notable feature: Google Talk with Video support. Other than that, it's a pretty bland update:

  • Lapdock support
  • Enhancements to image appearance when pictures are taken in panorama mode
  • Forwarded messages are properly identified as being forwarded
  • Improved audio quality with car speakers when connected to a car charger and audio
  • Introduction of international roaming 3G UMTS hotspot functionality for a single Wi-Fi enabled

While this update doesn't bring a whole slew of game-changing features, I'm sure it's still a welcome one for Photon owners.

[Updated x2: False Alarm, It's Not True] Motorola Photon 4G To Ship With An Unlocked Bootloader

Update 2: Apparently, there were Moto reps spewing false information at the Sprint event today, because both Android Central and Droid-Life have received word that the Photon 4G will not ship with an unlocked bootloader. The statement that Motorola released was still rather cryptic, however:

Motorola has recognized the passion around this topic in our communities.  As we’ve previously communicated, it is our intention to include the unlockable/relockable bootloader in software releases starting in late 2011, where operator and channel partners will allow it.  However, this feature is not included in the software found on PHOTON 4G.
