The Moment You've Been Waiting For - CyanogenMod 7 Beta/RC0 For The Droid X Available For Download

Even though it's only been two days since cvpcs first unveiled CyanogenMod 7 running on the Droid X, it seems that he has already worked out enough of the kinks to release the first beta/RC version to the masses. The flashing process is a bit more complex compared to other phone/ROM combos, but well worth the added trouble if you ask me. Everything you're seeing here today would have been impossible without the "2nd init" hack, which cvpcs explains in detail here.

[Updated: Update Should Start Tonight, But Maybe Not For Everyone] Verizon: Motorola Droid X Gingerbread Update Starts Friday

UPDATE: According to Droid Life, the update should start tonight, but it may just be a "soak test", for users that signed up via Motorola's support forums. That's not entirely confirmed at this point, so if you happen to get the update, drop us a line.

A couple of notes from Motorola about the update:

  • The update will be pushed late tonight. If you go to bed, it should be waiting for you in the morning.

Motorola Droid X FroYo Source Code Released, Developers Go Wild

This isn't the first time the Droid X has had its source code revealed to the world, but it's a first for the frozen yogurt kind (MotoBlur-ridden as it may be). That's right - despite some acknowledged issues with the update, Motorola has decided the pressure of the GPLv2 license was too much to bear and handed over the source code for the Droid X's FroYo update. Hackers, developers, and anyone else interested, tinker away!

First Custom Motorola Droid X ROM Released, Gives (Partial) Finger To eFuse & Motorola

Awesome news today on the Droid X front: the first custom ROM for the Droid X has been released by birdman. For anyone not living under a rock, this is a pretty big deal - Motorola was pretty serious about locking down the Droid X, and it's a relief to see that manufacturers can't completely kill the aftermarket.

The ROM seems to be based on the earlier leaked 2.2 ROM, and has only a handful of customizations:

v0.1 includes

  • OptiPNG optimized apk's
  • Deodexed
  • Busybox
  • Updated Superuser.apk (credits to chainsdd)
  • Removed
    • 3g hotspot
    • Kindle (market app)
    • Blockbuster (bankrupt company)
    • EMERGENCY (dial 911 for emergency's...dont screw around with an app)
    • My Verizon (bad market app)
    • Maps (market app)
    • Voice search (market app)
    • Swype (removed for their constant anger towards rom devs)
    • Skype (market app)
    • Google search (market app)

The ROM can be downloaded via ROM Manager, and as far as flashing it goes, it looks like you'll need to be rooted and have ClockworkMod Recovery.
