Dealing with loss on Mother's Day: How to avoid social media
Mother's Day can be tough for some people, but you can take steps to make coping easier
For many, Mother's Day is a joyous occassion — honoring your mom, buying her flowers, getting her a gift, or taking her out to for a nice dinner; but for others, it's a sad and painful day. I'm part of the latter crowd — this will be my second Mother's Day without my mom, as she passed away a little over a year ago, and the first one was an especially emotional day.
Where to buy last-minute Mother's Day gifts online
Forget the stress and buy something truly special
Buying a Mother's Day gift at the last minute can be a risky endeavor, and relying on online purchases can put you at the mercy of shipping times. However, just because Mother's Day is only a few days away doesn't mean you have to be stressed about finding the perfect gift. There are many apps and websites that offer thoughtful digital gifts, or physical items with speedy shipping.
Google wants you to use the Assistant as yet another messaging app
Big new capabilities for the Broadcast feature, and other Assistant updates
Google I/O is inching closer, but Google is already on an announcement spree. After teasing some launcher improvements coming to tablets and giving us a first glimpse at its response to Apple's Privacy Labels, the company is now getting ready to share some Assistant updates. For one, Assistant Broadcasts can now reach family members even when they're not home, but there's much more than just that.

Today Google has announced that the Duo web client will be picking up the ability to make group calls in Chrome, together with a handful of smaller tweaks that will make organizing those group calls with your family or friends a bit easier. The only potential hiccup here is the timeline: The feature is set to debut "in the coming weeks."
We're approaching Mother's Day in the United States and Amazon has a good number of its Echo and Fire devices on sale — our Aatif Sumar just pointed out a very good price on the latest version of the Kindle Paperwhite e-reader. What better way to follow up than to point you to the best price we've seen for the current-gen Amazon Echo speaker. The Alexa-powered smart speaker in its Charcoal, Heather Gray, and Sandstone finishes is just $65 on Amazon as well as B&H, Best Buy, and participating other retailers. The Walnut finish costs just a bit more at $85. Amazon Prime subscribers can get free one-day shipping.
Mother's Day is almost upon us and so are the related deals. If your mom needs a new phone and you do too, or maybe if both your mom and mother-in-law need new phones, you may want to give Verizon's BOGO offers a look.
Is your dear mother still listening to music with wires? Then as her offspring, you are duty bound to rectify that this Mother's Day... according to Jaybird. To help out with that, the Freedom and X3 Bluetooth earbuds are on sale for just $99.99 right now.The Freedom earbuds are smaller than the X3s and a little more expensive most of the time, but I don't think they stay put as well during workouts. The Jaybird X3 are larger, but they're rock solid and sound a bit nicer. Both devices have built-in storage for saving your sound profiles, so you don't have to rely on the app for EQ settings. The Freedom earbuds are usually $150 and the X3 are $130, so these are reasonable discounts. The discount is available on Amazon, the Jaybird website, and at other retailers. It looks like all the colors are included via Jaybird, but there's a bit of variation at other retailers. Here's a small selection of places to buy.Jaybird X3
This weekend many sons and daughters will be celebrating their mothers, and Google hopes Hangouts will be a part of the occasion. When you wish your mom a Happy Mother's Day, a random animation will pop up to mark the moment.
Motorola has had some pretty crazy sales for the Moto X in past months, but the fun doesn't have to end just because Lenovo is heading things up. Motorola is having a one-day Mother's Day sale on May 1st with reduced off-contract prices for all versions of the Moto X.
Mother's Day will arrive next month, but it's never too early to appreciate that special woman who brought you into this world and/or devoted many years of her life to raising you. Many will be happy to receive nice flowers, a thoughtful card, or some article of clothing - but for that tech-savvy, Nexus-toting mom out there, the Play Store is here to help. Google has kicked off a Mother's Day promotion that will last until May 5th, offering up an entire year's subscription to certain magazines for just $5 and 50% off a good number of books (unfortunately, since there's no gifting functionality built into Google Play, you will have to buy these things under her account somehow).
