This article was written by a guest writer, Mikhail Lifshits, better known as ljokerl over at head-fi.org. Mikhail is an audiophile to the bone - a single look at his forum user page will leave you wondering if there is a pair of earbuds Mikhail hasn't owned or tried yet.

Today’s smartphones are quickly absorbing the functions of other portable devices - PDAs, portable GPS units, and standalone MIDs are a thing of the past - and conventional MP3 players may be next on the cutting block.

Opera Mobile for Android (not to be confused with its Mini brethren) has certainly been long in the making, but according to a recent tweet by @opvard, one of Opera's employees, it's finally around the corner. The tweet didn't reveal much, but it did inform us that the mobile browser is on track for a November 9th release, adding a definitive date to the awesome Next page that we saw yesterday.

After months and months of waiting for a voice-enabled Skype to be out on Android and giving Verizon users an evil eye for that exclusive deal Skype signed with the largest US carrier, I am here to tell you that less than 2 hours ago, Skype officially hit the Market. This time, the long-awaited app is no longer restricted to Verizon, so download away (Android 2.1+ required)!

Update: the official Skype blog post is now live, including an intro video.

I am live here at the AppNation conference in San Francisco, and after San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom's welcome speech, in which he tried to get a bunch of developers to make apps for the government for free (yeah, riiight), we are looking at a mobile report from Nielsen, called The State Of Mobile Apps.

Nielsen, one of the largest media research companies in the world, compiled a report containing a few interesting metrics, such as:

  • Most Popular Apps
  • Application Discovery Methods
  • Free VS Paid Apps
  • App Billing Preference
  • a few Advertising related stats

You can download and read the full report below, but before you do that, I wanted to highlight one metric that I found the most interesting.

Google's Mobile blog (as well as their Finance blog) announced an update to the Google Finance mobile webpage on your Android (or... iOS) smartphone. The changes certainly aren't subtle: Google has streamlined finance to appear very similar to all the in-browser Google mobile web-apps. As an Android user, you may be asking why Google bothered - there's already a Google Finance app on the Android Market. The answer? The website, simply put, is just a lot more awesome.

ICQ, a still popular IM network that started it all, today released the official ICQ Mobile For Android v1.0.0 application to the Android Market.

While ICQ hasn't been at the top for a while, it still remains popular in Europe, and Russia specifically, with 100s of millions of registered accounts and 50 million active users as of 2008.

History

In 1996, ICQ became the first Internet-wide instant messaging service, changing the Internet chat, previously dominated by IRC, forever.

Droid%20Incedible%20Update

Many blogs and websites have reported over the past several days that an OTA update was coming for the Droid Incredible which included the following updates:

  • 720p video recording (sweeeeeeet!)
  • Verizon’s mobile hotspot app
  • Integrated Skype app
  • Cool new “Droid” boot animation

For the record, I’ve had my Incredible since the beginning of May and have seen only one minor update (update 1) since then. Apparently, this most recent OTA was a "rolling" update and was supposed to hit Incredible owners over the last week or so.

Sling Player Mobile For Android Goes Live Early - Available On The Android Market Immediately For $30

The long awaited Sling Player Mobile application is now officially available on the Android Market, with download numbers <50 (i.e. moments ago).

Sling promised the app would go live tomorrow but pulled the trigger early and launched it today instead (though I guess it is tomorrow in some time zones).

Update: their Android page is now live.

Things are looking good - so far all 3 reviews are 5 stars, though this may change when we get more installations.

White HTC EVO 4G Coming Exclusively To Best Buy July 11th, Sprint Stores August 8th - Preorders Open Now
Last Updated: July 11th, 2010

This was unexpected - Best Buy is offering exclusive preorders on a white version of the HTC EVO 4G, scheduled to arrive in Best Buy stores on July 11th. The white version is going to have the same specs and price of $199 on a 2-year contract. As usual, a $50 deposit in the form of a Best Buy gift card is required.

I am not sure personally that I would like the white version over the black one, but I guess some people expressed desire for one.

PSA: Reddit.com Mobile Site Revamped - Looks Great On Android

Yesterday, Reddit (one of my most favorite community news sites on the web) launched an updated and completely revamped mobile site, supporting most of the functionality of the main website.

I checked it out in the Dolphin HD browser on my EVO 4G and found very pleasant to use. Here are some features that I saw present and a few comments:

  • there are larger, mobile friendly upvote/downvote buttons
  • messages, including compose, reply, and context functionality
  • viewing of your own profile and links related to each comment/submission (reply, collapse, permalink, parent, edit)
  • submission is there
  • search too
  • lots of space saved via context menus provided by little boxes with 2 down arrows
  • the view should autoscroll when you reach the bottom, though it currently doesn't work for me on Dolphin HD
  • full commenting works, including the little useful "help" link

You can access the mobile site via this shortcut: http://i.reddit.com or by appending .compact to any reddit url.
