Avast! Mobile Security Updated, Brings Simplified Anti-Theft Setup And User Interface, Folder Scanning, And More

Thanks to its amazing anti-theft features – which are powered by what used to be Theft Aware – avast! has long been one of our favorite mobile security apps. That's not to say its malware prevention abilities aren't also a highlight of the application, because they are – in fact, it's an all around good package. And thanks to a new update that hit the Play Store just a bit ago, it's just got better.

The update doesn't bring anything major – it's really about fine-tuning what features are already in place. You'll find a simplified Anti-Theft set up process afterwards, as well as a new AT UI.

After Eighteen Months Of Service, Popular Security App TekTrak Shuts Its Doors

In an e-mail to its customers today, the team at TekTrak (an app we reviewed back in August) officially announced that the service has shut down and that users will no longer be able to utilize its features. In the heartfelt message the team explains that, as with many startup ventures, it has come time for the service to shutter its windows and call it quits.

TekTrak's official website has also been updated to reflect the end of the service.

Dear TekTrak Customers,
We are sad to announce that the TekTrak service has shut down, and you will no longer be able to use its features.

I'll admit it, I'm anal about CPU and RAM usage. I'm the kind of person that goes into MSConfig every 6 months to scrape useless startup processes like barnacles off the hull of a ship to keep boot times down and squeeze every last possible increment of free RAM and CPU that I can (insert "Then you should use Linux" joke here) out of my system. If you're like me, then you probably avoid heavy, suite-ized security solutions like the bubonic plague crossed with bird flu. There's nothing worse than turning on a new Windows laptop and discovering Norton is installed.

Comodo Mobile Security & Antivirus Released For Android - Combines AV, Call Blocker, Process Manager, And Privacy Protector Into One App

There's no shortage of antivirus, antimalware, or other forms of anti-bad stuff apps in the Market. In fact, we've look taken at a ton of them. If none of those could handle your list of wants from a mobile security app, have a look a Comodo Mobile Security - it brings a few useful features all together into a single app.

Like you would expect from Comodo, it's first and foremost an antivirus/antimalware. It also includes a subset of other useful tools, like process manager (read: task manager), privacy protection that allows you to keep certain info (like specific contacts, SMS, etc.) confidential, and an SMS/Call blocking tool that filters out unwanted calls and text with a standard black/white list.

We know, we told you our holiday giveaway series would feature some of our largest contests to date. And it did - we gave away over a dozen tablets and nearly as many phones to our readers. But we thought we'd start the new year off with our biggest giveaway yet (an international one, to boot) - 10 Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphones, courtesy of our amazingly generous friends at AVAST Software.

This contest is now over. There were over 13,500 entries, making it our largest contest ever by a huge margin (unsurprisingly). Apologies for the long wait - it takes a long time to finalize these giveaways, and with CES I had a whole lot of stuff going on at once.

[Review] Avast! Mobile Security For Android

After getting a glimpse of Avast's new mobile security solution a few weeks ago, I just had to dive in and give the app a full review. Avast, the long-awaited marriage of Avast and IT Agents' Theft Aware (see our review), certainly doesn't disappoint. It has an insane number of features, all of which appear to work perfectly, and it sounds like things will only be improving with time.

And did I mention the full-featured, root-enhanced app is completely free with no paid version in sight? As in, even the previously paid (Theft-Aware used to cost 10EUR) features.

Avast has just launched its Mobile Security app for Android, integrating the pure power of Theft Aware (see our review) with some amazing new features. If you remember, Avast swallowed up ITAgents, the small company behind Theft Aware, back in September and promised to integrate it with its upcoming software. Even in its beta state, Avast's Mobile Security looks to be a very strong contender among the dozens of other security apps floating around in the Android Market. I dare say it has the potential to overshadow just about all of the apps in our Mobile Security App Shootout.

At A Glance

XtraSEC is certainly a lightweight app, housing most of its power in the app's online interface. XtraSEC comes in both free and paid flavors. The free version lacks Remote Locking, Data Wipe, Battery Info and on demand SIM information, but the paid version comes in at a modest $1.99/year. The app's design is straight-forward, and the online interface is convenient and intuitive, offering up all your options in only a couple of screens.
