[Mirror, Mirror On The Wall] Google Engineer Builds Android-Powered Bathroom Mirror

With each passing year, the futuristic contraptions of science fiction movies edge closer and closer into the realm of reality. Case in point: Braun has just made a smartmirror that runs Android. No, not that Braun — this Braun. An engineer at Google, Max Braun is someone who enjoys using his spare time in more productive ways than simply watching TV on the couch. Instead, he has been building his own smart bathroom mirror — and it looks amazing.

The mirror displays information such as the time, weather forecast, and latest news headlines in a clean, minimalist UI. It's still a work in progress, and Braun is still experimenting with adding other things like traffic conditions and reminders.

Google Play Services Updated To 6.1.71 With New Google Settings Icon, UI Tweaks [APK Download]

Just over a week after its last update, it seems Google Play Services is receiving another bump - this time up to 6.1.71.

Of course, Google hasn't posted an official change log for the update quite yet, but we've already got the APK and can point out a few differences. The most obvious one is of course the new launcher icon for Google Settings, which follows Google's yet unspoken launcher icon design guidelines

The various menus also have new L-style checkboxes on pre-L devices. We're still digging around to see what's new, so we'll add more details here as we find them.

Pushbullet And EvolveSMS Join Forces To Give You One Less Reason To Touch Your Phone

Pushbullet is an app that consistently has strong updates that work toward crafting, step by step, a better harmony between your devices (including your computer). EvolveSMS is an app with good design that takes a sharp focus on functionality and making text-based communication easier. It only makes sense, then, that the two would make a great pair.

Today, Jacob Klinker, the developer behind EvolveSMS, announced a partnership with Pushbullet that will - put simply - allow users to receive, view, and reply to SMS messages from their desktop. That last bit is the killer feature - Pushbullet has mirrored notifications to your PC for a while, but the ability to reply to SMS messages is a very welcome addition.

AirDroid Adds Desktop Notification Mirroring And Drag-And-Drop Folder Uploads In Version 2.0.9

It's hard to overstate my love for AirDroid, the app that hosts a tiny, web-based interface for managing your phone with a desktop browser. And it just keeps getting better: the latest update has added notification mirroring, a la PushBullet and Notifications+. That means that once you enable the setting in AirDroid and Android, you'll get visual indications of incoming notifications on your AirDroid desktop.

Enabling mirroring is easy - you'll get a prompt the first time you start the updated application, so all you have to do is check the box in the linked settings dialog. At the moment the service has some limits on its functionality, mostly because the alerts appear and disappear in a few seconds, and there's no way to scroll back through them - you'll just have to pick up your phone and check.

Koush Updates Mirror With 'Super Beta' Support For Chromecast Screen Mirroring, Currently For Rooted Nexus 5 Only

Ever since the Chromecast came out, we've been wondering when an official screen mirroring feature would show up. Rather than wait, Koush is already working on that with the Mirror beta app. The functionality is limited right now, and of course, is still only accessible to those in the beta program. You might want to check it out, because Koush has pushed a new version with preliminary support for Chromecast mirroring.

The original feature set of Mirror included recording a screen capture video and mirroring to an Apple TV. Now you can send your screen to a Chromecast or the Chrome browser, but only if you're using a rooted Nexus 5.

Download: Latest Google Play Store 4.4.22

Following yesterday's unveiling of Android 4.4 and the Nexus 5, we've been enjoying a nonstop barrage of APKs which got here before any of us even got a chance to receive our own Nexus 5s in the mail thanks to the Nexus 5 factory image.

One of the updated APKs inside the image, as it turns out, is a slightly updated Play Store with version 4.4.22. The latest Play Store before that - the one that brought us the slide-out navigation panel - was 4.4.21. This one must be at least one better, right?

APK Download: Hangouts 2.0 With Support For SMS, Animated GIFs, Location Sharing, Moods, And Statuses

Earlier this week at a Google+ event, the company announced several important additions to Hangouts for Android. The updated version 2.0 comes with SMS support as well as location sharing, the ability to display animated GIF files, as well as the previously discovered in a teardown statuses and moods. AndroidPolice covered the rumor on October 7th following my initial Google+ report on October 4th.

The coveted update may take a while to reach you, considering it hasn't even started officially rolling yet. Luckily, we have the APK from the Nexus 5 factory image you can download and safely install manually.

APK Download: Android 4.4 Clock/Alarm/Timer/Stopwatch App With Fixed Font, Four Tabs, New Time Picker, And More

Android 4.4 is out, and that means developers and tinkerers have already started digging through the code and various APKs in hopes of porting as many updated apps as possible for use with existing devices. The first and easiest app to extract is, unsurprisingly, the clock, which also acts as an alarm, timer, and stopwatch. I've installed it on my Galaxy Nexus without any issues and only had to clear data to get rid of the pesky force close, which is completely undestandable.

As you can see, the updated clock pulls the alarms out of the clock Activity into its own tab, which means the tab count changed from three to four.
