A Quick Look At Google's New Messaging App - Messenger

Ever since we first took a look at Motorola's Nexus 6 (and subsequently saw it leaked and finally announced) there's been a question about that blue and white icon in the dock. We learned directly from Google that it would be a new app called Messenger, that sounds like it will - for all intents and purposes - replace the AOSP messaging app that used to appear on stock devices.

Tip: Hold 'Send' In A Hangouts SMS Conversation To Specify A Subject

A single SMS message is generally limited to 160 characters, which gives it the potential to be a very concise means of communication. If, however, you feel that the point of your message will be hard to convey in such small snippets, Hangouts has a feature for you.

Hangouts allows users to specify a subject for SMS messages. Simply hold the send button for a moment, and a subject box will appear as shown below.

Pushbullet And EvolveSMS Join Forces To Give You One Less Reason To Touch Your Phone

Pushbullet is an app that consistently has strong updates that work toward crafting, step by step, a better harmony between your devices (including your computer). EvolveSMS is an app with good design that takes a sharp focus on functionality and making text-based communication easier. It only makes sense, then, that the two would make a great pair.

Today, Jacob Klinker, the developer behind EvolveSMS, announced a partnership with Pushbullet that will - put simply - allow users to receive, view, and reply to SMS messages from their desktop.

Hangouts On The Web Learning A New Trick - Sketch A Message

It looks like Hangouts on the web is learning a new trick. Some users are reporting that Hangouts can now sketch a message, drawing with a variety of brush widths and colors on a little scratchpad, which is sent to the user on the other end of the conversation as an image. To sketch, users need only hover over the camera icon, click on the pencil icon that appears, then draw away.

Google Search Talks Back - Latest Update Can Hold A Conversation For Certain Commands

Besides fixing Google Experience Launcher on tablets and adding some new cards, the new Google Search update has another trick up its sleeve - it will now hold a conversation with you to perform certain functions, and talks to you in a new way.

Basically, you can now start with very general voice commands like "send a message." The microphone will then turn into a white speaker on a blue circle, indicating that Search is responding to you.

CyanogenMod 10.2 To Include New 'Global Blacklist' To Block Calls, SMS, Or Both

According to a post by David van Tonder earlier this evening, CyanogenMod's 4.3-based 10.2 iteration will be able to boast a "Global Blacklist" among its features.

CyanogenMod is known for its subtle yet incredibly useful additions and tweaks to stock Android, and the new Blacklist will blend right in with a "holo compliant interface".

As the name implies, the blacklist will be truly global – it will support blocking of calls and messages, will be configurable through Settings, Phone, and Messaging, and available to third-party apps via a "new Content Provider API".

Facebook App Updated To v.2.1, Brings Voice Messaging, Better Sharing, And Faster Photos

It's nice to finally have Facebook pay at least a little attention to its mobile apps for a change. Today, the social networking giant is rolling out an incremental update that brings a couple of new features. Of course, there's the big one: remember that new voice messaging thing that Messenger got? Now the regular app has it, too.

Here's the full changelog:

What's in this version:

• Open and view photos faster
• Share your friends' stories to timelines, pages and groups
• Send voice messages when you have more to say

The bulk of the new changes will likely be of little consequence, but if you've ever been mildly frustrated by your inability to share a friend's posts to different pages or groups, your life will get just a smidge easier.

Facebook Brings Messaging Improvements To Messenger And Main Facebook Apps, No It's Not The New Native App

I know, you were really hoping for that extra special upgrade that Zuckerberg has been teasing ever since he admitted that HTML5 was a mistake. This should be a nice little improvement, though. Now, no matter which app you do your Facebook messaging from, whether it's messaging in Facebook, or via Facebook Messenger (confused yet?), you'll be able to see which of your friends is online, whether they're mobile, and even pin select friends that you talk to most to the top of the list.
