Game developers have a new player in the game engine market, and it's one most of them already know quite well: Autodesk. At GDC Europe, the software company behind some of the most popular 3D modeling tools in the industry – 3ds Max and Maya – has announced the Stingray game engine to compete with the likes of Unreal, Unity 3d, and others. Alongside Autodesk's other design tools, it offers a seamless solution for game developers and designers to rapidly prototype and build high performance, cross-platform games.
Stingray is based on the Bitsquid game engine acquired by Autodesk last year. It supports testing and deployment to Android, iOS, Windows 7 and 8, Oculus Rift DevKit 2, PS4, and Xbox One.
Today, Autodesk announced Maya LT, a streamlined 3D modeling tool targeted at independent and mobile game developers. The maker of AutoCAD and 3ds Max is looking to make a splash with developers by introducing a lower-cost version of its Maya software, but still keeping it equipped with powerful animation tools, including a skeleton generator with the capability to calculate inverse kinematics (using Autodesk HumanIK), and a viewport preview system to visualize models as they would appear in game with full lighting and texture effects. Just watching the video makes the software look like a lot of fun to play with, which seems like an important quality when building games.
Claiming to have brought the first action/real-time strategy game to Android, the developers at Maya released Legendary Heroes to the Market yesterday. The game's overall structure and style are highly reminiscent of Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a popular mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, meaning Legendary Heroes is almost sure to be a hit.
The game centers on "quick and intense matches," in which players control up to three heroes, fighting to destroy the enemy and their "source," while leveling up and gaining new abilities. Legendary Heroes promises hours of gameplay, a dynamic set of heroes - each with their own unique powers - and the ability to push characters to their potential with power ups.
