Welcome to the weekly roundup of the best new Android applications, games, and live wallpapers that went live in the Market or were spotted by us in the previous week or so.

This week, I am trying something a little different due to complaints about the heavy weight of these roundups. There are now no usual app widgets, Appbrain widgets, barcodes, or embedded videos. There are also fewer screenshots - instead, I'm picking out only the most interesting ones.

Because there are no Appbrain widgets, I decided to include the current price for paid apps next to the Market link. Video links, when available, go to the same area.

Discovery's Official HowStuffWorks Android App Now In The Market

HowStuffWorks.com, together with its numerous video and podcast series, like the hilarious Stuff You Should Know, is arguably one of the most interesting websites on the Internet. It's no wonder - HSW is owned by Discovery Communications, which you may recognize from, oh, I don't know, the Discovery channel. Sometime ago, Discovery finally decided that Android users are not discovering enough and not figuring out exactly how all of this stuff works, and got to work on a dedicated HowStuffWorks app.

Today, the final product, which lets you stalk HowStuffWorks podcasts, videos, articles, and all their authors better than a dedicated stalking app made by your ex-girlfriend could ever do, was unleashed onto the Android Market.

Evernote For Android Updated, Tons Of New Features Included

If you're like me, you use Evernote a lot. I never know where I'll be or what I'll be doing when I get an idea for a new post, a review, or any other random thought that I feel may be beneficial to my future (that last one doesn't happen too often). For this, I turn to Evernote for Android on a near-daily basis. Of course, it has always been lacking a lot of features that you find in the desktop and web variations of the software - until today.

Evernote has released a huge update to its Android app, adding a solid list of new features.

LauncherPro v0.8.5 With Skinnable Widgets, Improved Performance, and Reduced Memory Usage Now In The Market

Last week, LauncherPro's Federico Carnales launched a beta version of the new LP Plus with skinnable widget support, and this update, tagged 0.8.5, made its way into the Market as of this morning. Skins can be downloaded and installed as regular Android apps from the Market or from 3rd party websites (sorry, AT&T users) and then applied to LauncherPro Plus (you need the Plus edition to have widgets).

Besides skins, the new version brings reduced memory usage, improved scrolling performance, and calendar widget daylight savings bug fixes.

Grooveshark Stands Up For Its Service - Makes Android App Available Online And Sends Out Open Letter To The Music Industry

Companies like YouTube and Grooveshark are at the center of the ongoing controversies around online distribution of copyrighted materials. This controversy reared its ugly head earlier this month when the Grooveshark app was removed from the Android Market. While this disappointed many of the users who stream all their favourite tunes without having to posses an actual digital copy, Google was justified in kicking these pseudo-pirates out of the Market, right? Not so, says Grooveshark.

In protest to Google's decision to drop the app, Grooveshark has re-released it to the public. Although the app is still absent from the Market, it has been made available on Grooveshark's mobile website.

Google Says Over 3 Billion Android Apps Have Been Installed And 350,000 Devices Are Being Activated Per Day

On their earnings call today, Google revealed some impressive stats about Android, courtesy of Jeff Huber, Senior VP of Commerce and Local. There were three notable facts, in particular: there have been over 3 billion Android apps installed, downloads of Android apps are up 50% in the last quarter, and 350,000 Android devices are being activated per day. Whoa, whoa, and whoa.

Given that we've heard about the massive number of activations before, perhaps the most impressive numbers are those about apps. As TechCrunch so eloquently puts it: "The first billion installs took 20 months, the second billion installs took another 5 months, and the third billion took only 2 months." Given that downloads jumped a ridiculous 50% in the past three months, it the next 3 billion will likely happen in no time at all.

Android Market Carrier Billing Now On Sprint, Do You Have It Yet?

Well, seems like Google wasn't lying when they said they would continue to work on providing carrier billing as a payment option in the Android Market, announcing the addition of the feature to Sprint handsets, alongside T-Mobile and AT&T. With three out of four major US carriers down, will carrier billing be coming to Verizon any time soon?

The feature has long been the request of many customers across all carriers, particularly internationally. This is largely due to the fact that Google Checkout remains unavailable as a payment option in a number of major international markets in South America and Asia, where Android's popularity is rapidly growing.

Editorial: Motorola XOOM Sales Estimated At 100,000 So Far - Does It Really Matter?

No doubt you've seen at least one mention of the 100,000-XOOM sales figure somewhere on the web today - and for me, it has reached the point of mild annoyance. From this number, all sorts of wild extrapolations and theories are being tossed around about Motorola's future, Android's future, and the viability of tablets in an Apple-dominated market.

Boy Genius Report took a step back, and presented a level-headed but clearly pro-XOOM take on the news:

So, according to Deutsche Bank, Motorola has sold 100,000 XOOM tablets in less than a month and a half, which is an average of over 75,000 units per month.
