Analytics firm Canalys is reporting that global smartphone market share for Google’s Android OS platform is at a colossal 48%, with an overall lead in 35 out of the 56 countries tracked by Canalys. According to the report, the total global smartphone market has grown by 73% year-on-year with a total of 107.7 million devices shipped in Q2 2011. Latest data from Nielsen indicates that Google's Android's OS claims the largest share of the U.S. smartphone market with a total of 39%. However, this market share is split between HTC (14%), Motorola (11%), Samsung (8%) and other Android hardware manufacturers (6%).
In contrast, Apple's iOS now commands 28% of the market which is well short of Android's 39%, but what is interesting is that because Apple is the only manufacturer making iOS devices it is the leading smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. Read More
According to market research firm Strategy Analytics, Android now holds 30% of the tablet market, which is a massive jump from 2.9% in Q2 of last year. This can certainly be attributed to the slew of Android-powered tablets released in the last several months, like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Acer Iconia Tab A500, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and HTC Flyer/View 4G.

We often hear smartphone and other market share figures bandied about by various analysts and market research firms - but comScore tends to be a pretty trusted name in the industry, particularly when it comes to web traffic figures, so we take these numbers as being fairly reliable.

Nielson's latest statistics show little change over last month's, with Android, iOS, and BlackBerry holding first, second, and third place, respectively. Admittedly, the numbers for Android and iOS dropped a percent each to 36% and 26% while BlackBerry moved up a percent to 23%, but still - relatively unchanged.
However, this month's report included an interesting look at data usage. Perhaps due to the much larger community of power users, Android owners suck down 582 MB of data per month, 90 MB (18%) more than iOS (492 MB). Read More
In case you thought Android's extremely fast-paced growth was being exaggerated, comScore's latest report on mobile market share might just convince you otherwise: From December 2010 to March 2011, Android not only kept its first place position among mobile platforms in the US, but it shot up 6 percentage points - far greater than all other platforms.

According to new data released by The Neilsen Company, Android has passed both Blackberry and iOS for smartphone market share among non-prepaid subscribers. At 29%, Android is 2% of ahead of their two main rivals, which are both at 27%.
The survey also examines use by device manufacturer, which of course Apple and RIM dominate (being that they, unlike Android, make their own phones). Among Android manufacturers, HTC leads the pack at 12% (oh how the EVO has treated them well), followed by Motorola at 10% and Samsung at 5%. Read More
Just a few weeks after Android became the number one smartphone platform in the US, Canalys is reporting that strong sales of Android devices in Q4 2010 has helped it overtake Nokia's Symbian OS to became the world's best selling mobile platform.
33.3 million Android-based devices were sold globally in Q4 2010, compared with 31.0 million Symbian-based phones and 16.2 million iPhones.

Every month, mobile advertiser Millennial Media releases their Mobile Mix, a report detailing where things stand in the mobile industry. This month marks a significant first, as well as some all-around good news for Android. Their highlights:
- For the first time, Android surpassed iOS as the largest Smartphone OS on the Millennial network, with an 8% increase month-over-month and 46% impression share on our network in December. The iOS currently has a 32% share
- Android ad requests grew 141% from Q3 to Q4 and since January, Android has grown 3130%
- Android devices represented 16 of the top 30 mobile devices on the Millennial network
- When breaking down the revenue generated by apps in Q4—Android had a 55% share as opposed to 39% for Apple.
According to analysts at Piper Jaffray, Android's share of the tablet market will grow to 39% by 2012, trailing Apple's 44% market share.
Apple's sole tablet offering, the iPad, has dominated the market for much of 2010, comprising 95% of all tablet sales in Q3 of 2010. Currently, the strongest competitor to Apple's iPad is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, running Android 2.2.
