Sprint's 4G LTE network continues to trudge along, slowly growing both larger and faster at the same time. Now the carrier has upgraded the data speeds available in 20 new markets across the country. Consumers benefiting from this news range from California and Arizona in the west across the US to Connecticut and New Jersey in the east. Down south, Sprint's boosting things for residents and visitors of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
To celebrate the one-year anniversary of its LTE rollout, T-Mobile has announced a major network upgrade plan that is sure to make a lot of customers a little happier. Anyone who has ever tried to use T-Mobile's network outside of densely-populated areas has undoubtedly noticed that, out in the sticks, the data speeds are almost always 2G/EDGE. Well, apparently that's all about to change. According to a new press release, it plans to upgrade its existing 2G/EDGE network to LTE and begin deploying additional LTE coverage on the 700 MHz A-Block spectrum that it's acquiring from Verizon. T-Mobile expects 50% of the work to be completed by the end of 2014 and the rest to be mostly finished by the middle of 2015. For good measure, the "Un-carrier" also took a potshot at Verizon for its television commercials which T-Mobile claims represents its network coverage as "ink blots".
Sprint Spark support is gradually rolling out to some of the carrier's devices, but there is something to be said for learning how to walk before learning how to run. Large swaths of the US still do not have access to Sprint's LTE network at any speed. Consider the state of Ohio, which until now has only had one city (Salem) on the complete list of supported areas, and that location only joined just last month. Now Sprint has added four more, in addition to 36 other markets, bringing the total to 340 areas nationwide.
Earlier this month, AT&T passed the 500 mark in the race to expand the number of areas across the country with access to the carrier's 4G LTE network. The effort is ongoing, though, and the company has now officially added several more locales to the list. Customers in areas ranging from the West Coast to the Atlantic Ocean should all now notice faster data speeds when browsing on the go.
It's that time of year when consumers are shown a near overwhelming array of new electronics, and many of them will undoubtedly need to connect to a cellular network in order for the real fun to happen. So AT&T has announced 24 new areas around the continental US that should now have access to 4G LTE speeds, along with two more in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. We have a pretty even spread of markets this time around, with faster connections popping up on both coasts, along with parts of the South, Midwest, and the Rockies.
Sprint has been steadily rolling out 4G LTE coverage to markets across the country, presenting new clusters every month or so. This month's list is significantly longer than usual. We're not looking at a couple dozen here, but 70. These areas are spread all throughout the country, but many of them are concentrated in the South, with new locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
Sprint's network unfortunately sticks customers with the worst combination of variables, giving them both slower speeds than competitors while having less coverage. This situation is slowly changing, with the company rolling out faster spectrum to markets across the country that typically don't get first priority. The latest rollout brings 4G LTE to pockets scattered all throughout the country, including Lexington, Kentucky; Pensacola, Florida; and Farmington, Missouri - the perfect name for the type of locations where Sprint likes to introduce LTE.
AT&T is rapidly expanding its 4G LTE availability, pumping billions into the effort as it seeks to upgrade most of its network. Now the cellular provider has introduced zippier speeds to the the eight new markets listed below, along with five additional expansions. The new markets are concentrated predominantly in Alabama, California, and a couple states in the Northeast.

Ma Bell is still markedly behind Verizon when it comes to total LTE coverage in the United States, but they're catching up quickly. Today AT&T 4G LTE service has been activated for Napa and Santa Rosa-Petaluma, California, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Kalamazoo, Missouri, Orangeburg, South Carolina, and Jackson, Tennessee. The company has also announced expanded markets in New Haven County, Connecticut, Greensboro, North Carolina, Charleston and Walterboro, South Carolina, and the San Francisco Bay area, including parts of San Rafael, Pittsburg, Antioch, Livermore, Brentwood, and Novato.
