Adam Ratana, creator of a series of skull-themed live wallpapers, recently released Steampunk Skull Live Wallpaper to the Android  Market, bringing an interactive clockwork skull to your device's home screen.

The wallpaper is dynamic and interesting, without being too busy or distracting. The gears are interactive, speeding up or slowing down as you manipulate the screen. The LWP also includes settings which enable users to alter the wallpaper's performance to save battery life.

In the wallpaper's full version (which rings in at a cool $1.49), there are even more settings, allowing the user to customize the wallpaper's background and choose from several different types of gears.

The creators of such marvels as My Beach and Celtic Garden, DualBoot Games, have outdone themselves this holiday season with Christmas HD - what I believe to be the most intricate live wallpaper I've seen on Android in a long time (ever?).

Customizable lights, gifts, tree topper, snowflakes, garlands, and a Christmas countdown are just the tip of the iceberg. Wait till you see your own photo above the fireplace, your family's names embroiled on the stockings, and a note to Santa signed by the same guy or gal who's looking back at you in the mirror every morning. And all of that in gorgeous 3D.

If you're into throwing quirky, fun stuff on your Android and just love live wallpapers, this is the app for you. It's called Alive TV, and it's not only a fun way to liven up your homescreen, but it's very well made, [somewhat] functional, and quite pleasing to the eye.

Here's the gist: a wobbly TV takes center stage, bouncing around as you scroll through homescreens. Bubble clouds appear and float around, creating a rich, playful environment. While the free version of the LWP is pretty basic, only allowing you to "play" with the little TV guy, the paid version actually provides some functionality.

One of my favorite features of Android is being able to have widgets on my device. With just a few widgets, my important information can be a quick glance away. Unfortunately, widgets typically offer a limited set of information (e.g., the last five messages) and the lack of animation on the majority of widgets makes them feel more static than they really are. Even Honeycomb's widgets are fairly limited. Fortunately, Android's live wallpapers allow for a far more engaging experience and the Bubbleator live wallpaper takes advantage of that.

Full disclosure: Bubbleator is made by ARO, and I have recently been hired on as a developer at ARO.

I am not a big fan of live wallpapers. They provide me with eye candy for a few minutes before I completely lose interest and start playing Cut The Rope. However, sometimes live wallpapers can be informative or so compelling that they deserve a second look. The Neon Microcosm Free LWP is one such live wallpaper that is not particularly useful but is aesthetically pleasing.

This live wallpaper hurtles you around a colony of glowing cells and if you purchase the paid version you can also tap the screen to generate new cells and select their colour.

If you want to show off your shiny new Android phone to your friends, there is no better way to do so than having this wallpaper on display.

Normally, I feel like live wallpapers are a novelty at best. While they may add functionality or pleasing aesthetics to a device's homescreen, they usually end up sucking down the battery and slowing down the device as a result.

Every once in a while, though, a LWP comes along that makes any potential downsides totally worth it. Thus is the case with a new live wall from Bizai Studio called Swirling Ornaments.

I'm going to be totally honest here -- this may be the best LWP I've ever seen. The colors, smooth transitions, and overall elegance is truly beautiful. Have a look:

The best part is that this wall is completely free.

If you've been looking for a live wallpaper that offers up a bit of functionality and nice physics, then Gravity Home may fit the bill perfectly. It's a live wallpaper / launcher hybrid, and unlike some of the competitors in the Market, it's actually useable.

The concept behind Gravity Home is simple: instead of having static icons on your homescreens, why not have icons that dynamically move around as your device moves? While this may sound slightly annoying, the icons actually "float" around the homescreen, so the movement is very slow and fluid, making it easy to tap the one that you want while it's still moving around.

Remember the stunning MyWater live wallpaper that was ripped out of the Transformer a month ago, complete with ice cubes floating in water that shifts around when you tilt your tablet? Here it is:

I actually had no idea but apparently the water level changes depending on the battery charge level. Very cool!

This was the only live wallpaper I've ever considered running on my XOOM - it's original, well done, and constantly draws intrigued stares from the people around. It was the only one until today that is, when I saw Ruvort's custom mods to it over at XOOMForums.com.

Clock widgets, clock livewallpapers - when will we have enough of them? Never, I say! Every once in a while, a new clock variant comes out that pushes the limits of originality, and I think this is what we have here today with Text Clock Pro.

If you've been in an English fanatic's kitchen, there's a chance you might've seen a bunch of word magnets on their fridge which you can assemble into sentences. More often than not, you would take a word out of their carefully-prepared quote, or just arrange them in whichever order that sounded the dirtiest.

Text Clock Pro is the Android equivalent of that.

Thanks to sano614 over at the XDA forums you can now have a few of the goodies from the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer on other Honeycomb tablets, specifically the super-nifty My Water live wallpaper and ASUS's weather widget. You've probably seen this wallpaper before - it's the beverage-esque one that moves around on your screen as you shift your tablet around, complete with ice cubes and bubbles. The weather widget offers what you would expect: current conditions and temperature in a visually stimulating package.

I've uploaded both the widget and the wallpaper to our mirror for convenience purposes, but don't forget to jump over the to source thread at XDA and drop a thank you note.
