Update: Best Buy has reached out to us to confirm that the $99.99 no-contract Verizon Moto G will go on sale as shipments arrive at the retailer's stores, which will apparently be as soon as today for some locations. If you're looking to get in on this $99 deal, it may be worth giving your local Best Buy a call to see if they have any in stock. Online availability will follow at a later date. Read More
Earlier today, we published a first look at what we believed to be a Yahoo!-made competitor to voice assistants like Google Now and Siri. The video, sent to us by an anonymous tipster along with screenshots showed what looked to be a very impressive app with an implementation similar to Facebook's Chat Heads, whereby a Y! icon would constantly float on the home screen waiting to be activated.
This evening, TechCrunch learned through a source "familiar with Yahoo's internal projects" that the app wasn't real, implying the video was nothing more than a really nice concept demo. Read More
When Microsoft initiated a purchase of Nokia back in September, a lot of Android fans let out a defeated sigh: there was no way the company would ever release Android-powered hardware. Well hold on to your dreams, true believers, because multiple leaks indicate that a new Nokia phone will indeed run Google's open-source OS.
The phone is codenamed "Normandy," though that is almost certain to change to "Lumia Four-Digit Number" if it's released. Read More
A couple of days ago @evleaks (via tipster) shared a tip that an upcoming device known as the LG V510 would be a Nexus device. Considering the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 7 had already been refreshed this year, this left some suspecting that it would be a larger Nexus tablet. But as it turns out, the LG V510 is no such device. It's a Google Play Edition LG G Pad 8.3. Read More
The Padfone form factor is a unique one, and even if it hasn't set the world on fire, I'm glad to see that ASUS continues to upgrade and modify it. The latest iteration appears to be a midrange phone/tablet combo: reliable tipster Evleaks showed a new PadFone Mini model on his Twitter account, with a 4.3" phone body and what appears to be a 7-inch tablet shell.
There's no detailed technical information available, though Evleaks does mention a 2013 release. Read More
Alas poor QWERTY, I knew him, Horatio! A fellow of infinite texts, of most excellent data entry. Here hung those keys that I have tapped I know not how oft. Where be your Tweets now? Your emails? Your Google+ posts? Nowhere around here, that's for sure - the QWERTY slider phone has become rare in the last year or so, with only the Samsung Stratosphere II, the LG Enact, and a BlackBerry or two filling the once-swollen ranks. There was an unusually specific leak from Samsung last month, showing a relatively accelerated schedule for updates on the Galaxy S4, S III, and Note II on all four major American carriers. That isn't much comfort for those customers on US Cellular, since the #5 carrier wasn't quite important enough to be included in the leak. But now there's a new leak in town, helpfully provided by an anonymous tipster, showing that the US Cellular Galaxy S4 will be updated on Friday the 8th. Read More
If you can tear your gaze away from KitKat and Nexus news today, there's actually other stuff going on in the Android world. The indefatigable Evleaks has just posted what he claims is a photo (of a photo) of the Moto G, which he himself was sent via a tip. It looks a lot like the Moto X, but as some have predicted, with more low-end specs.
According to the tweet, the phone will use the same screen size and resolution as the Moto X, and both the front and rear of the body look remarkably similar to Motorola's current flagship. Read More
If case you don't remember, Google announced Helpouts back in August. It's a different take on Hangouts where experts can make their assistance available via a video chat session for a fee or free of charge. Google has been laying the groundwork for a public rollout of the service, but no dates have been made official. We've been passed some information by a trusted source that says November 5th is the big day – that's just one week away. Read More
It looks like last night's press shot of the Nexus 5 from @evleaks wasn't the only morsel of Nexus news we were meant to receive this weekend, after all. Our favorite gadget leaker has provided another treat, this time sharing a press shot of the white (well... black and white) Nexus 5, along with a possible release date - "11/1".
This render looks more refined than @evleaks' shot of the black Nexus 5 and, while the front remains black, the new shot makes the white N5 look downright appealing. Read More
